Have you heard the cuckoo this year?

Not heard a single one here in a rural part of West Midlands. Someone locally did manage to photograph one though. They put it on our local FB page, so there are obviously some around. Perhaps they're the dumb variety.

Normally we hear and see cuckoos in our local country park, but we haven’t heard them yet I’m afraid.

We used to hear them every spring here in North Bucks but none this year nor any woodpeckers. Not surprising as every inch of land seems to be sprouting new housing developments an road/ rail building ( don’t mention HS2 round here!)

We haven't heard one here for a few years since houses were built on what we think was their habitat.

Yes walking the dog in New Forest today on our way to Devon.

Twice: once in West Sussex, at 3a.m! for an hour and a half, and recently in Dorset.

I haven’t heard one for many years, sadly. When I was a child/teenager in Cheshire they used to drive me mad. They always seemed at their most persistent when I was revising for exams.

We can hear them from our garden in nearby trees, and have heard several while out walking in the countryside. It's been a good cuckoo year.

In Shropshire they’re alive and well and have been around since May.

I have heard one virtually daily on my early morning dog walks along the Blackwater estuary, here in Essex. Have also heard a couple more in some of the surrounding areas. I have heard this regularly over many years now and always heave a sigh of relief when I hear the first call in Spring that heralds the cuckoo’s return.

We’re in a very leafy part of outer SW London but I haven’t heard one for years.
Plenty of assorted other bird life though, inc. great spotted woodpeckers and the pesky parakeets!

I have heard the cuckoo every spring for 40 + years in our local wood in Yorkshire. Very sadly I've not heard it once this year.It has made me feel quite glum.
Mind you so has my neighbour using his his hedgetrimmer just now for 2 hours on the big hawthorn hedge between us.There are birds nesting in there.I very carefully trimmed back the longest bits encroaching on our path yesterday. And now he's butchering it from the other side. We get in well and I've dropped hints before about wildlife because they seem to have no regard for it. But today just can't bring myself to say anything. Just quietly seething instead.

In Oxfordshire, this year I have only heard a cuckoo twice in May and once this week. For a few years there was one that started up at 4am every day of its season, which I loved to hear, but not in recent years.
I always used to feel sorry for my deaf mother who had never heard one.

We used to hear them in Essex but haven’t since moving to Norfolk.

Yes, a few times in May and earlier this month. Mid Cornwall.

Yes when we were in France in May. We would hear it nearly every morning.

Not heard one for many years, then while away heard one near Slimbridge. Quickly turned the coins over in my purse! My DH was bemused

We heard one here a couple of years ago on one of our local walks. I was having a strop about something and DH said “Just stop wittering and listen to that”. It was a cuckoo. It put a smile on both our faces. Haven’t heard one since.

Yes, in North Wiltshire. Started about a month ago

I’d love to hear one but never have not likely near London but I’ve never heard one even on many U.K. holidays.

I can’t remember the last time I heard a cuckoo here in South Bucks. We also here a few woodpeckers and occasionally on our lawn digging up worms.

I haven’t heard it this year.
When ds2 was small he woke one morning and in a sleepy voice
‘Rogers back’
Me: ‘Who is Roger?
‘The Cuckoo’.

We have called it Roger ever since ??

Recently, he recorded a nightingale singing!

Yes, in la Sarthe in France when I stayed with my DH back in April! He lives in a rural area where we regularly hear owls and see a variety of garden birds at the feeding station. Occasionally, he spies deer in his garden and (less welcome!) wild boar!
