Getting rid of an oak tree from a very small garden

My dear departed husband bought a plant with no label from a garden centre attached to a stately home. He asked the attendant what it was, they asked someone else who said it was a flowering bush, they didn’t know the name, but it didn’t grow very big and took a couple of years to flower. Took it home and planted it in the very small front garden of our terraced house near the front door. Next spring when it sprouts leaves I said “it’s an oak tree!” He said no way they wouldn’t sell an oak tree. It was an oak tree. He kept saying that he was going to get rid of it. Then he got ill and everything went to pot. The tree kept growing as they do. I am not a gardener and just kept cutting it back. After DH’s death and when I got myself together I got some chaps off Trusted Traders to come and sort out the garden including getting rid of the tree. They cut it off just above the soil and cut a cross in the top telling me that it would not grow back. Well it has. It keeps sending shoots out horizontally and I keep cutting them off. What can I do to kill it properly? Sorry for the long post.

You can get stump killers. We used some on the stump of a very diseased apple tree years ago. I think my husband drilled a few holes and poured the liquid in. It did work, but I can't remember how long it took.
Google throws up quite a lot if you type in "tree stump killers".

Try SBK, it may help to cut a cross in the top before you apply it.

Why don't you get those people who did the job back to sort it out. They told you it wouldn't regrow, and it has. Their responsibility. If they refuse, get in touch with Trusted Trader, this is how their business works- reputation.

We had to have a huge tree cut down in the front garden; it was planted by the builders, the wrong tree in the wrong place. Branches fell off and we were worried in case one fell on a neighbour's car - or worse a neighbour!
Last year little trees seemed to keep sprouting along the roots all across the lawn, but they were easily pulled up or cut with a mower or strimmer. Haven't seen any yet this year.

We planted a smaller tree to replace it.

Our tree surgeon is very reputable and recommended by the County Council - he ground out the trunk but the tree kept sprouting along the roots.

Try pulling one, ours came out very easily. Or you could ask them to come back and treat the area.

A reputable tree surgeon will remove it for you.

What can I do to kill it properly?

They can come back and grind out the remains of the trunk but it will cost extra - we paid another £100.

The remains of the trunk didn't sprout, it was the long roots which sprouted.

Thank you all for your help. I had never heard of stump killers before. I will get on that.

If you need a tradesman in the future, please dont use Trust a Trader. I’ve been aware of this for over 20 yrs when my ex son in law put me onto how it works.

Or Check-a-Trade as our neighbours found to their cost.

The County Council may have a list of recommended tree surgeons on their site.
