I’m not keen on French or African marigolds, either. In fact I bought a pack of common-or-garden (sorry!) marigold seeds the other day because I havent seen any plants to buy.

You do rarely see pot marigolds for sale, SueDonim, or at least I hardly ever do - which is why I was keen to rescue this one!

Or coreopsis?

Likely coreopsis. Spread in the wind or by birds.

Love it Witzend They are so cheerful and self seed freely in my garden. The petals look lovely sprinkled on salads.

I like these field weeds. Yellow, sunny looking like marigolds, and free.

Are they Black-eyed Susan?

It looks like a pot marigolds, Calendula Officianalis. Very good for companion planting in your veg patch to keep flies away. You can use the petals in salads to make them more interesting.

Although an annual they self seed and with any luck you will have new baby plants next year. Mine even grow in the gravel by the house. I do love them, they are so bright and cheerful and usually flower early and long in the season. You could save the seeds and grow your own.

My sister told me the other day that she`s put a lot of marigolds in her garden because the smell keeps cats away (she hates cats). I`m not a gardener, but if I was I`d leave marigolds out of it, I`d rather have cats, lol!

I just looked it up in my Flower Expert book, Casdon - calendula officinalis, aka Pot Marigold. ‘…old garden plant once widely grown as a kitchen herb, but now used as a summer-flowering annual’.

I’ve learned something today, thank you. I’m going to look out for one for myself now, it looks lovely.

French marigolds are good to grow as a companion plant with runner beans, they supposedly keep blackfly away.

I need a couple of cheerful plants for pots as my nemesia seeds, grown from a packet, failed to germinate.
Years ago I bought two large nemesia plants for these pots and every year they seeded themselves until this year.

The official name is calendula, I know, but to me they’ve always been just common or garden marigolds - as opposed to African marigolds, which TBH I don’t like at all. Others must though - there are always masses of them in garden centres!

Are they hardy then Witzend, I didn’t realise there were two different sorts?

That’s lovely Witzend, I don’t think it’s a marigold though as they have ferny type leaf shapes. Maybe a calendula, does anybody know?

Witzend Mon 12-Jun-23 13:20:54

All I did was plant and water it, Callistemon, and remove dead flowers. The compost in the pot was years old and bone dry - I haven’t given it any feed, either! Sun and water have evidently been enough. 😎

Well done

You must have green fingers!

Proper old-fashioned marigolds! How lovely! 🌻

A big plant, reduced to £3 and looking exceedingly miserable at the garden centre. I put it in a big old pot that’s been empty for ages - it’s looking so much happier now!
