What to put in pots for the autumn

I have never grown Dahlia's, not sure why, just did not appeal as much as other flowers but earlier this year bought one to put in the centre of a very large tub. It has grown really large and has not stopped flowering during all the rain we have had in the NW whereas lots of my other flowing plants have just rotted away or ceased to flower. Yesterday I bought some more Dahlias, bright cheerful orange which I hope will continue to flower into Autumn replacing some horrible leggy, weedy looking Nasturtims which have not done at all well this year.

Liriope, variegated liriope, cyclamen, ornamental cabbage.

Asters keep on going and provide colour.

Here are some of my recipes that I have used over the years according to the size of the pot. I think I got them from a book originally, but they have been lost in the mists of time.

So.

For a chimney pot type
2 red cyclamen
2 variegated Ivy
1 small variegated hebe with plenty of flower
You could underplant with dwarf daffs and replace the cyclamen with a couple of blue pansies.

One of my favourites, but it will only really last until Christmas
Pot sbout 12” diameter.
1 variegated hebe and 1 dark leafed hebe both with plenty of flower spikes
1 large white cyclamen
1 winter cherry berry ( solanum)

I have lots more written down but I’ll just post one more of my favourites.
Pot about 21” diameter
1 large upright heather
2 variegated hebes
2variegated ivies
10 white daffs - Thalia
4 white hyacinths
20-25 Scilla
4 pink large cyclamen
4 pink primrose to replace cyclamen

A small green conifer in the centre (don't plant .it in the rockery afterwards! Dwarf conifers can suddenly take off.)

Heathers (good in pots as they like acid soil)

Some can be planted around the garden afterwards

I've got a dwarf conifer from a hanging basket that is now about 10 foot high in the garden! And it's still growing.

I've got two dwarf conifers, still in pots but still going strong and about 4ft tall. Don't think I will leave them to get to 10ft though, too heavy to move, at least my two I can still move around depending on how I want the garden to look.

My three dwarf conifers behaved themselves for about ten years in the rockery.
Then they suddenly took off at an alarming speed.

I like autumn perenials- like several types of sedum that bees and hack moths really love. And phlox, my favourite is white and it flowers later than the others.

I will never tire of winter flowering pansies and of course, Primroses.

A have bought Creative Containers from Gardeners’World magazine Guide. It has ideas for every season.

It's hanging baskets and hayricks I struggle with, they're looking great at the moment but that won't last too much longer.

I’ll be putting in viola’s and ivy.

DGS now aged 20 is coming to stay next month and will, I know, help me plant up some winter pots.

One I like is Ilex Verticillata - Winter Berry Holly, which loses its leaves but has lots of lovely red berries all winter. It’s quite attractive in the summer too. I’ve got one by my front door underplanted with ivy.

To those of you with dogs, before you go wild planting things, do a little research on which plants are dangerous your pets.

We got a new puppy earlier this and Beloved did a bit of Googling, you'd be surprised.

My dog has never eaten garden plants EEjit, and instinctively won’t touch berries. I think they somehow know what they can eat, as he’s stolen tomatoes off the plant, and has tried courgette too.

Also Kaffir Lilies. I've got red ones and pink ones. They spread and are a lovely colour when not much else is about.

I have 4 new pots of red berried Skimmia surrounded by silver foliage each year. Then I place my smaller posts that have still got some life in them such as the Hercura along side them and retire any pot that does not look good.

I keep topping up my varieties of Hercura which grow and give colour all the year round

Autumn asters are lovely, deep pink, deep purple and white- and great for bees too.
