When will this wind ever stop?!

I know that various parts of the country have been badly affected by the non-stop rain recently, and we have suffered here in the South East too. But my main complaint is the continual torrential wind!

I know I sound like an old grump, but I am sick and tired of it. Even on the occasional sunny day, the wind is blowing a gale in our garden making it very unpleasant to spend any time out there pottering, planting and planning. My delphiniums, lupins, penstemons and other perennial plants are growing at an alarming angle because they are constantly blown sideways! The poor Acer which I bought last year has had its new leaves shrivelled by the constant blast, even though it is in what I thought was a sheltered spot right next to the house in a corner of the patio. We live at the top of a hill with woods at the bottom of the garden but I wouldn't describe our house or garden as "exposed" as we are quite sheltered by other houses on both sides.

I'm sure that it never used to be this windy even when we moved here 20-odd years ago. Has anyone else had the same problems with excessively windy weather over the last 10 years or so?

I would add that it goes on well into May and June, and sometimes even the summer days are excessively gusty nowadays! Good for getting the washing dry, but very uncomfortable when trying to sit out in the sunshine!

I’m in the south east as well and fed up with the cold wind . I’m back to wearing my woolly hat when dog walking as the wind was giving me ear ache

I love in thr Black Country and our small town is high up. As you say even on a sunny day like the last 2 days there is a constant wind and it just cuts through you. I was determined to sit out and was bundled up like an invalid. The wind dropped for 10 minutes and it was like the tropics but it soon started up again.x

I'm in Central France and its the same here. Snow fell last
week and not just the mountains. The cutting freezing wind is
forecast to continue here for this week.

I'm on the south east Kent coast and the wind is relentless. We had a very short respite for a few hours yesterday, and I think Thursday offered up a couple of decent hours, but apart from that it's been wind, rain and even hail. Spring weather has certainly been in short supply.

North west here, it’s rained persistently since October. Ground sodden
Yes wind as well, definitely Big Coat weather
Today the sun shone and the wind only chilly hirrah

I’m in north Norfolk. I’m so fed up with the weather. We’ve had rain for months and when we get a brief respite from it there is the biting wind. I need to get things done in the garden but even if it’s dry it’s just too cold. Or perhaps I’m a wimp!

Same in the South West. Soggy for months and the always present wind. This afternoons sunshine spoiled - again - by a bitter wind. We’re coastal and it’s often breezy, this is something else. At least our Montana doesn’t mind and is covered in flowers. Something to trigger a smile.

I’m in the South East too and thoroughly fed up with the cold wind. I’m recovering from a serious illness and can’t wait to be able to sit in the garden and potter about doing odd jobs. I know there’s nothing we can do about the weather of course but I do think a lot of people are feeling down in the dumps about the cold miserable weather.

We are in Shropshire and have had two relatively wind free days, it made such a difference and we accomplished a lot in the garden.

I’m another fed up of the weather. Ever since we returned from New Zealand in mid February it has rained and been extremely windy. It was raining constantly before we left too. We went to Paris for a short break last week and it was rainy and windy, but we did have some sunshine. Thankfully today, although it was windy, the sun shone for the marathon in London. My son was one of the runners.

Here in the east midlands the wretched wind has been almost without let-up since this time last year. All last summer, no matter how bright and sunny, it was rarely warm enough to sit outside because the wind made it so miserable. Add to that the never-ending rain and it's no wonder everyone's grumpy. I can hardly believe it: we've just had two fine, dry days together and it feels like winning a prize.

Merseyside it’s been so wet here it’s miserable we had a couple of pleasant days. I took advantage and tended to veg patch sowed seeds etc. However going for a walk in the woods is hard work everywhere is so muddy. I put my chunky jumpers away but got them out again as it’s so damp and cold.

I'm in the East Midlands too. We have a view of a wind turbine in the distance. DH sits at the table for meals staring into the distance predicting how windy it will be.

I think the seasons are all messed up. I jut get up in the morning, look out of the window and if I go out I dress accordingly. My garden is also the same, I live at the top of a hill and the wind and rain blusters down both sides of my house as it is detached so the daffies and tulips got battered and when my lupins, and other tall plants start to grow they also get battered. I have started planting hydrangea bushes in the garden instead of individual tall plants which I now have moved and replanted in tubs and put them where they are out of the winds way. I only fill the tub halfway with soil, compost etc. so that when the plants grow to their full height, there is only three quarters of the flowers showing and they are much more stable and secure. I have just read about there being a hosepipe ban this summer as there is a shortage of water.

East coast and the weather gets me down it’s so cold and so windy I don’t even want to go for my usual beach walks ….
scribbles the same for us it seems to have been windy for ever even last year sitting on the beach we never had a day without heavy winds

My fruit trees are trying their best to hang on to their blossom, ornamental cherry lost blossom in two days, now just a mess everywhere, I could go on, but I won’t, I’m depressing my self, hoping for a decent summer but long term weather forecast is not so great, so on that note, bugger the gym, the spaniel and I are going back to bed!

Yesterday was lovely here in Yorkshire. I had no one to walk with but forced myself to go for a walk on my own. I did wear my coat though, there were a few moments when I wanted to take it off! It was glorious to be out in the sunshine with no wind, seeing the spring blossom and the green grass- no mud!

Today, however, Just rain again. Oh well, so glad I made the effort yesterday!

M0nica Mon 22-Apr-24 08:55:49

It is not just the wind, it is how cold the wind is, I really feel the cold and I look into the garden on a sunny day and think'Right I will do some gardening' and I get outside and the wind makes it so butterly cold i quickly retreat back in doors.

Our house is for sale at the moment, so i want the garden looking its best. I have managed to get the grass cut, but weeds are sprining up everywhere.

Nannylovesshopping Tue 23-Apr-24 18:52:45

Windy, cold and rainy, I’m so fed up!

M0nica Wed 24-Apr-24 08:26:30

Woke this morning and guess what! It has been raining again.

AskAlice Wed 24-Apr-24 08:36:50

My tortoise is like one of those old-fashioned weather houses. If it's warm-ish, she comes out of her kennel, if it's cold or windy she stays inside! She's well buried in her hay this morning and my wind-spinner is spinning like crazy.

Another cold, windy day...sad

tickingbird Wed 24-Apr-24 08:49:58

I’m in the East Midlands and the cold wind is awful. I’m so fed up of it. I cycle but won’t go out in this wind so haven’t been on the bike this year. Plus the constant rain; when is it going to warm up I wonder!
