My Albertine

My Albertine gets the afternoon sun. It’s over 20 years old and thriving, despite MrB’s attempts to kill it. It gets cut back quite drastically when it starts trying to invade the neighbour’s garden.

Maybe its just in the wrong spot because most roses like a lot of sun

Was sorting out my photo collection - this is from one of my holidays - I know where it is from - can you guess where ? Also I’d like to know the name of the - I was told at the time but I have forgotten

Thanks folks, helps to see it all written down. I have a bag of farmyard manure ready for the autumn. Front garden very very depleted. Garden centre says it does smell. Will.wait till cold weather so as not to bother neighbours too much. Just had horrible thought, farmyard could involve chickens. Will.find out.

Albertine such a beautiful rose. I used to have it over a rose arch. I love it.
Good advice from posters, nothing to add, except, I hope yours does well once you've fed it initially.

I hoe in some rose feed and bonemeal just as they start to flower, away from the stems though. Water it in well. Then also manure autumn/winter, well rotted from our garden centre.

Roses are really hungry, thirsty plants. I heap well rotted manure around mine in the winter which seems to do them good. I put the manure in a 'doughnut' around the stem - if you pile compost/manure up against the stem it can rot.
This not only feeds the plant but keeps moisture in. Water well.

Albertine don't generally need much pruning and winter is the time to do it so I wouldn't do it now.

I am sitting on.the.garden.next to it, lovely, but it's not nearly as happy as it was last year. It doesn't get an awful lot of sun but adequate. Quite straggly, should I cut right back? Poor soil. I have put some compost round root at surface and watered a couple of times with additives. I don't really know much about what to do.Suggestions?
