What was the first record you bought?

My dad bought me the first two Beatle LPs for Christmas when I was about eight, I think one was called With the Beatles and also the other LP was the one with the cover that's shot in black and white and features their four heads. Their music was the first I really got into. My parents, having said English pop music before the Beatles was absolutely awful became appreciative of them at the same time, which made a welcome change for me because they only ever played classical from what I can remember. My youngest son now has them along with a lot of my later albums such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Santana, The Doors which I liked when I was a bit more grown up. He reckons they are worth something now, not that he intends to sell them.

Cracklin Rosie by Neil Diamond....funny thing was I was about 11 at the time and laid up poorly, so my sister was fetching it for me...

'Dianna' has been mentioned: when I was 16, a 14 year old at my judo Club fancied me, so the others kept singing Dianna at me "I'm so young and you're so old, oh Dianna etc etc"

I was in love with Adam Faith, but can't remember his songs now.

My first was Brontosaurus Stomp by the Piltdown Men.
Downloaded it a few weeks ago and had a rare old time replaying it for a bit.

Next was Expresso Bongo and Move It by Cliff

In complete contrast to my first single (Itsy bitsy teeny weeny) my second one was Harry Secombe singing" God Bless the Prince of Wales".

Red Sails in the Sunset, Tab Hunter, he was fabulous, and as I discovered later gay, ah well I was only about 14.

Wasn't "Sitting in the Back Seat" sung by the Vernon Girls? One of them had glasses, and apparently received more fan mail than the rest of the group.
My first record bought with my own money was "Tammy" by Debbie Reynolds - I loved that romantic film!
The poor youth of today don't know what they're missing, those booths (in this case in the Co-op, Stevenage) where many a happy Saturday afternoon could be spent listening to the newest releases. I-tunes can't possibly compare! Technology is wonderful, but I sometimes think we just had more fun!

I agree with most of the above records, but my very first single purchase was a Woolworths cover version of Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, by someone called Paul Rich, and I still have it, in playing condition, and it was bought in 1959! My first LP was Blue Hawaii, by Elvis Presley.

That's interesting feetlebaum. I suppose it was the Clavioline that produced that shrieky noise at the very beginning of the track. I remember clearly standing in a record shop and asking for it to be played before I bought it (as one did in those days) and then going hot all over (with fright) when it suddenly came on.

Mine was 'Seven Little Girls - sitting in the back seat'. Not sure who sang it.

Weary Blues - Bunk Johnson

An old-time jazz trumpet player from New Orleans, Johnson had been found driving a tractor in the New Iberia rice fields, given a trumpet and a new set of false teeth (I kid you not) and a band to play with. Sort of jazz paleontology...

My second purchase was Tito Gobbi, singing Largo al factotum.

@Petallus Little Red Monkey eh? It featured a new 'thing', the Clavioline, an electronic keyboard that fitted under the piano keyboard - this was progress! It was monophonic, and they became quite popular being seen fitted to pub pianos I recall. I think the record was by Frank Chacksfield.

I had Boom Bang a Bang by Lulu given to me as a Birthday Present, but the 1st record I bought was Everlasting Love by Love Affair I think around 1967/68

Lets Dance by Chris Montez and Not Fade Away by Rollng Stones first LP which I still have was With the Beatles played in my room after finding it in mum's wardrobe hidden amongst Christmas presents,it was quickly put back into the sleeve when I heard mum coming in from work at 5pm.
I've still got a lot of Del Shannon and early mowtown records which I used to buy in the record shop in Liverpool as soon as I got paid on a Friday before we went to Cavern for the T-time group before we got the Ferry back over the River,if my dad knew where we had been I would have been in trouble
