Best loved songs from your childhood???

I sing-a-lot at various venues (mostly) Music Hall songs, but lately I've been branching out into a slightly different direction.

I've rediscovered songs I remember from my childhood (50's/60's) that my mum used to sing to me, and Uncle Mac used to play on Saturday mornings. I'd gathered a few from memory, eg: Animal Crackers (Shirley Temple) Nellie the Elephant (Mandy Miller).

Of course, I could look up a variety on Google - but that feels like cheating! So, all you great Gransnetters, I ask you, what songs would/do you still sing from your childhood? It would be so helpful for me to have an idea what folk like to hear and join in with grin

It was Alma Cogan who sang about the railroad running through the middle of the house, as well! Perhaps they had similar voices?

No - just had a quick Google, there is no record of Rosemary Clooney ever having recorded it.

Guy Mitchell's 'Feet Up, Pat him on the Po-Po' was very popular when my little brother was born. I remember Dad singing what would now be highly inappropriate lyrics. hmm

Didn't Rosemary Clooney sing 20 tiny fingers? And "The railroad runs through the middle of the house".

Put another nickel in
In the nickelodeon...

Pickin' a chicken with you - was it Lita Rosa?
(Not one for the vegetarians)

I only know because I rememered the song too and a couple of years ago I looked it up. A male group also did a version of it - can't remember their name!

KatyK Sat 10-Oct-15 17:38:33

Oh did she Ana ? I had no idea who sang it.

Ana Sat 10-Oct-15 17:28:34

Alma Cogan sang that, I think.

Whenever I see twin babies, this pops into my head

Twenty tiny fingers, twenty tiny toes
Two angel faces, each with a turned up nose
One looks like mommy with a cute little curl on top
And the other ones got a big bald spot exactly like his pop

I must have heard it somewhere. grin

Greyduster Sat 10-Oct-15 16:30:01

Golly, Daisyanswerdo, I'm grateful he never got past the chorus!! grin. Thank you for that, I'm much enlightened!

Because it rhymes with Piccolino (or maybe piccolina?)

feetlebaum Sat 10-Oct-15 16:08:47

Odd that - why would an Italian be playing an English traditional instrument instead of the ubiquitous accordion? There just ain't no telling...

I remember The Spinning Wheel, sung by Delia Murphy.

Elegran Sat 10-Oct-15 15:37:45

"All over Italy he played his concertina.
Poppa Piccolino, Poppa Piccolino
From sunny Italy.

He played so prettily
To every signorina
Poppa . . etc"

Elegran Sat 10-Oct-15 15:35:44

It was Poppa Piccolino and Davy Crockett was king of the wild frontier.

("Did you know that Davy Crockett had three ears? A right ear, a left ear, and a wild front ear" Boom boom!)

friends123 Sat 10-Oct-15 15:30:52

How much is that dog in the window?(Alma Cogan)
All over Italy is Empapupalino (ditto?)
Davy Crockett son of the wild frontier
Island in the sun (Harry Belafonte)
Yellow Rose of Texas
One man and his dog

I am currently rereading Mary Stewarts' "The Crystal Cave" The red dragon of the Pendragons is in that.

thatbags Sat 10-Oct-15 14:54:58

I've always liked dragons. My feet are on one right now. In a rug I made 35 years ago.

thatbags Sat 10-Oct-15 14:53:44

sing

thatbags Sat 10-Oct-15 14:53:35

Has Puff the Magic Dragon been mentioned? I used to song myself to sleep with that one.

Elegran Sat 10-Oct-15 14:52:21

I saw a mouse.
Where?
There on the stair,
Right there.
A little mouse with clogs on.
Well I declare!
Going clip-clippety-clop on the stair.

Elegran Sat 10-Oct-15 14:49:43

Dunno what they're doing' but they laff a lot, behind the green door.
Gimme the moonlight . . .
Red sails in the sunset
Truly truly fair, truly truly fair, how I love my truly fair
She wears red feathers and a huly huly skirt
Gilly gilly ossenfeffer katzenellen-bogen by the sea
I saw a mouse . . .

Elegran Sat 10-Oct-15 14:42:30

What Nancy Whisky actually sang was "Frit trin, frit trin . . ."

Daisyanswerdo Sat 10-Oct-15 14:38:16

Falconbird, the presenter was Derek McCulloch, and I remember him as Uncle Mac from Children's Hour. He used to say 'Goodnight children, everywhere.'

Carus Sat 10-Oct-15 14:30:37

78 wasn't it, not 75?
