Younger daughter has bought me a DNA test, I have to register it with Ancestry then send it off and wait.

What can I expect ? I have not the foggiest how it all works

Jalima1108 Sun 09-Dec-18 11:51:49

Luckygirl I think it was the comedian Greg Davies who found he was descended from Owain Glyndwr.

My mother's side is connected to Edward IV so I am probably related to Danny Dyer grin

Jalima1108 Sun 09-Dec-18 11:49:52

Most of us have a percentage of Neanderthal heritage too.

GabriellaG Sun 09-Dec-18 11:47:53

I am 25% Spanish through my maternal GM 12.5% Irish through my maternal GF and 37.5% English and that suits me fine. How it originated hundreds of years ago doesn't interest me now as it was a faff receiving false leads on Ancestry so I left it. grin

GabriellaG Sun 09-Dec-18 11:38:44

You may not be prepared for the results. We all (apparently) originate from Africa. You may have some unsavoury characters in your ancestry and may not be as Welsh as you hope think you are.
Good luck shamrock
It can be an interesting, absorbing journey.

We (OH and I ) used 23 and me last year. It was postage paid and quite straightforward to use.
The results were a bit surprising especially concerning my husband. He had a tiny percentage of native American and south East Asian ancestry plus enough Italian DNA to be able to pinpoint roughly how long ago it entered the blood line.
I'm 100% European but my goodness, what a glorious mixture I am!

Anniebach Sun 09-Dec-18 10:10:58

Esspee I have never heard of ‘23 and me’.

Bellasnana i don’t expect anything amazing , just hope for a lead to some one who vanished .

Bridgeit. ?

Bridgeit Sun 09-Dec-18 09:57:42

I am interested in doing this, but I don’t like the thought of my DNA being somewhere out there , perhaps I’ve been watching too many ‘ who done its’

Bellasnana Sun 09-Dec-18 09:32:28

I did the Ancestry one. Not really sure what I was expecting, but found the results a bit vague. It hasn’t flagged up anything amazing grin

Esspee Sun 09-Dec-18 09:06:19

I used "23 and me" and was delighted to find I am part Neanderthal.
I was reassured to discover I don't carry the breast or prostate cancer gene and especially that I don't carry the Alzheimer's gene.
I have messaged a couple of cousins I didn't know I had but have not had a reply yet.

Anniebach Sun 09-Dec-18 08:53:46

? as he died 600 years there must be rather a lot of decendents , he had ten children

Luckygirl Sun 09-Dec-18 08:46:21

There was a "Who do you think you are?" programme where the person found he was descended from Owain Glyndwr. They then invited him to a full pub, where every single person was also so descended - so he did not feel so special.

Anniebach Sat 08-Dec-18 21:56:35

Just had a thought , I could be proved right, I am a decendant of Owain Glyndwr, the last Prince of Wales ?

I am getting a little carried away now ?

Doodle Sat 08-Dec-18 21:45:40

Oh thank you annie that's so nice.

Anniebach Sat 08-Dec-18 21:33:19

Doodle both parents born in Wales? You could play rugby for Wales so you are Welsh ? this is for you ???????

Do it Luckygirl you could be decendend from some wealthy royal family , I don’t mean the Windsor’s, they are not exotic

Luckygirl Sat 08-Dec-18 21:24:46

I would love to do this. It has been suggested that my maternal grandmother might be mixed race not too far back (features, curly black hair). My siblings and I all have dark colouring, including skin, in spite of a fair father.

But then, we all hail form Africa initially.

Maybe I will save up some spit for a test one day.

Anniebach Sat 08-Dec-18 21:12:25

Bathsheba, May be interesting ?

Bathsheba Sat 08-Dec-18 19:47:11

Oops, "there was quite a large number" - before anyone picks me up on my grammar wink

Bathsheba Sat 08-Dec-18 19:46:05

Annie there were quite a large number of 3rd and 4th cousins, but I've not really looked into them yet - planning on renewing my full membership of Ancestry in the New Year, and investigating a little further with these. Might be interesting! There were some 1st and 2nd cousins which I already knew about, so no surprises there!

Doodle Sat 08-Dec-18 19:35:14

anniebach I have a neighbour who did it and was fascinated with the results.
I have always thought of myself as a bit Welsh as both my parents and my brother were born in Wales although I was born in England. My paternal grandmother was part French though where from I don't know. I have always been quite proud of being a bit Welsh as a number of my larger family are Welsh and my father was a coal miner in the valleys. ?

Anniebach Sat 08-Dec-18 19:18:59

Nfk, I have gone back to 1670 with my Anglesey side , my doubts are with my South Wales half because many people came here for the iron works and coal mines, hope my female ancestors behaved . 1% Eastern European Jew and 2% Iberian, gosh

Anniebach Sat 08-Dec-18 19:10:33

Bathsheba I will share it here I promise , I now have a fantasy, I have been searching for uncle William brn 1834, in Anglesey, he vanish after 1871, I have searched for him for years, he didn’t die on Anglesey, perhaps he married and has a descendant with a tree on Ancestry, I so want to know where he was buried, if in England my brother can take a little soil from Wales and scatter it in the graveyard. A fantasy though. The brother of my g granny died in Liverpool, had soil sprinkled there. Did you find distant relatives ?

NfkDumpling Sat 08-Dec-18 18:38:33

Mine was postage paid too.

I’m 100% Norfolk going back as far as the late 1700’s. The fact that some of my ancestors before then were Walloon and Dane I already guessed. It doesn’t make me any less Norfolk! I am curious though about the 1% Eastern European Jew and the 2% Iberian!

Bathsheba Sat 08-Dec-18 18:29:18

Annie please do come on here and let us know if you really are 100% Welsh, or as near as makes no difference. How fascinating that would be!
I've had it done with Ancestry.co.uk. It didn't cost me anything in postage, however - it was postage paid.

Anniebach Sat 08-Dec-18 18:08:41

Cherry thank you x

My parents right back to my 7 x great grandparents on both sides , all Welsh , unless one of the females was naughty ?, the only Anglesey one to leave the Island was my paternal Grandfather and he came to South Wales , be interesting but ???????

Cherrytree59 Sat 08-Dec-18 17:20:56

Annie would you be you are ok with a Celtic ancestry?

A long lost USA cousin on my maternal line has taken the DNA test and discovered that she is mostly of Viking descent, which I am ok with.

You are born and bred Welsh with Welsh parents,
so Anniebach lass You are 100% Welsh
And quite entitled to represent your country rugby. tchgrin
