Hi
I know this is an old posting- so forgive me! But I sometimes search for questions about Tourettes - just to see what turns up
Two of my kids have T. For them it started suddenly and was severe. Do they're on medication. They're both doing well.
I think it's great you're asking for help. Not everyone is supportive. Tourette's is a very complex illness
For me - the hardest thing is that the kids always suppress their tics in public - so people don't realise just how hard it is- for all of us. We get very little sympathy or support. So be kind to the parents ! Especially the mum- I find I bear the brunt of angry tics
It helps our kids to do hobbies that occupy their brain. Tics happen because the brain can no longer choose when to act or speak in a certain way- it just bursts out. If they're doing something they enjoy they tend not to tic.
But their concentration can be limited - so it really needs to be something they have an aptitude for. My son is musical - drums help him. My daughter finds sport helpful.
Kids with Tourettes can become very tired - even when they're looking normal. This can be because of the energy it takes to control their body and speech.
Tourette's can come with other features- which can be worse than tics. My son has obsessive tendencies, my daughter can go into a rage.
Hope that helps.
Hope you get this!
