Deep questions from a 6 year old

DGD2 (aged 6) asked me 2 very deep questions yesterday neither of which I could really answer. I fear my pathetic excuses of an answer have not satisfied her very curious mind and she set off to school this morning to ask her teacher "who knows everything there is".

Gracey "Grandma, do people give other people jobs?"
Me "well yes mostly I think they do, but some people kind of give themselves jobs, a bit like grandad".
Gracey "Did grandad give you a job?"
Me "Yes I suppose he did"
Gracey "Grandma, who gave God his job or did he just give it to himself?"
Me confused

Number 2

Gracey "Grandma what does it mean when people say, I'm coming back a man".
Me "who said that?"
Gracey "Mam"
Me "I think she means that it might be better or easier being a man"
Gracey "I doubt it grandma, but where would mam be coming back from?"
Me "I think she means, if she comes back to earth after she dies"
Gracey (more confused now) "Oh, can you come back to earth after you die?"
Me "well not really, I mean I'm not sure, but some people think you can"
Gracey "what can you come back as? do you get a choice? I want to be a horse or maybe an elephant or a lion, oh no they eat things, or a kangaroo or a............................."
Me confused
Gracey confused confused confused

I think they were meant to be very serious questions shysal but I admit they do sound quite funny. I am really looking forward to finding out the answers from Miss. (she that knows everything) smile

DS age 5, getting off tube train: "Who made God?"

DD aged 4, when very ill: "Why doesn't god make me better?"

DS aged 4: I understand that God made the universe, but who made God? Sadly couldnt find my copy of the Ladybird Book of Metaphysics and Philosophy.

DS aged about four: How does the moon stay up in the sky?

Nelliemoser Thu 02-Oct-14 12:14:08

gillybob I am afraid they are quite reasonable questions. She is pondering further on every answer you gave her.

It shows she is listening. You had better brush up on Philosophy and Theology ASAP before the next round. grin

Yes Nelliemoser they were asked very seriously but I have to laugh at the thought of God starting his own business in creating the universe.

I look forward to the next round this weekend. She is really into "God" at the minute. smile

grin I love the idea of God facing his empty desk and new sharp pencil and pad and telephone, thinking 'Where do I start?'.

DD3 - at the age of four asked "what is water made of?". Hydrogen and oxygen didn't really cut the mustard as an answer

GS1 aged 7 *how do planes stay in the sky?" Daddy teaches the theory of flight!!! Why is he asking me about it???

rosesarered Thu 02-Oct-14 21:22:33

I always feel the shorter the answer you give, the better for all concerned. It's no good giving an answer that they don't understand easily.Or giving an answer that may scare them.
Questions about God/death etc I leave to the parents [who may well have told them something different.]

gillybob Thu 02-Oct-14 22:57:59

The thing is with my son and DiL rosesarered they would have no doubt told DGD to "ask grandma". smile

I loved reading about your conversations gillybob, they raised a smile.

I got the usual 'why is grass green', 'what makes the sky blue' but the one that still makes me smile was when we were driving past a big factory complex out in the countryside somewhere and great plumes of steam were billowing out of the chimney stacks, my daughter, aged about 6 at that time, said 'is that where clouds are made' grin

Taking a walk in the countryside with assorted members of the family, DS age about 7 asks "Do policemen get a good pension when they retire". This came from out of the blue and my sister could barely conceal her amusement. He was seriously thinking about his future. He didn't join the force when he left uni. He's now head of housekeeping in a small local hotel.
