Use of acronyms

Am I the only one who finds the constant use of acronyms irritating? I have just tried to read a thread of 100 posts and gave up. There were so many acronyms that I had not a clue what they meant. I could work some of them out but others left me behind.

Thankyou ana, although I find working on the tablet very frustrating and slow, I changed to the desktop site which seems marginally better.

I've got used to the more usual acronyms now, but sometimes have to ask or google more unusual ones.

But Grannyknot, your username starts with a capital letter...confused

Teaching was rife with acronyms.......used to go to training and they were peppered about like bullets. If I asked what they meant everyone else would also admit confusion, not having dared to ask.

Nice to be retired.

I suppose at first (although I can't remember now) it must seem a bit like learning a new language.

I too find DD DS annoying, and what's wrong with hubby, partner. FFS BTW IMHO etc. are not a GN thing though as we know. they are used in texts and on other forums. I've been using them for years.

It's just shorthand, it makes life easier. I never really think of the D as standing for dear, but perhaps now when he's not in the good books I'll just type H. Or I could use D for damn.

Atqui Sun 13-Sep-15 15:57:35

Glad I'm not the only one who really doesn't want to put D'in front of H. What's wrong with H, D, S ,GS, GD if the whole point of acronyms is speed?
One that amuses me , though I haven't seen it on GN is TLDR .

Atqui Sun 13-Sep-15 15:59:00

Ha'Ha Maggie! perhaps Imshould put FH or BH!!!

Maggiemaybe Sun 13-Sep-15 15:59:33

He's in the doghouse at the moment, as it happens. I'm thinking BH, SH, possibly even FH. smile

Maggiemaybe Sun 13-Sep-15 16:01:02

Cross posts, Atqui! grin

Ana Sun 13-Sep-15 16:15:27

I've just googled TLDR Atqui. Certainly one to bear in mind in future...grin

janerowena Sun 13-Sep-15 17:06:08

I do like the D. My DBH comes in very useful, mentally, it conveys both affection and irony.

Grannyknot Sun 13-Sep-15 17:30:44

Ana doh! I thought it was all lower case shock - senior moment. I never write it with a capital or didn't as far as I remember so I don't know how that happened.

Icyalittle Sun 13-Sep-15 19:55:28

I like RTFT (read the thread). Very often needed on GN when something has already been explained / answered.

Ana Sun 13-Sep-15 19:57:05

Yes! That's another one I'll have to remember, Icyalittle grin

Ana Sun 13-Sep-15 19:58:22

(Although I might just modify it to RTBT for GN wink)

Indinana Sun 13-Sep-15 20:54:16

Ooh, I'm going to have to make a note of those two - TLDR and RTFT. Or yes, perhaps RTBT. Or perhaps WYMRTTP (would you mind reading the thread please) grin

auntiejantie Sun 13-Sep-15 20:59:37

Silly me! I hadn't realised there was an index to the acronyms! I don't think it is going to make it less annoying for me though - I will still have to stop and think what each one stands for!!!!

Indinana Sun 13-Sep-15 21:04:36

You'll be amazed how quickly you will get used to them auntiej. If you're a regular poster, or 'lurker' you'll learn them all in next to no time smile

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 13-Sep-15 21:53:59

I love LTDR!!!

GNHQ should add it to the acronyms list. I very rarely read posts more than about three lines long.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 13-Sep-15 21:54:26

Got it wrong then. hmm

TLDR

TerriS Sun 13-Sep-15 22:44:02

reikinana - of course if he isn't a 'DH' you can always call him 'OG"! - look it up in the acronyms ;)

Indinana Sun 13-Sep-15 22:59:43

And what you have to remember is that SiL can mean son-in-law or sister-in-law.

numberplease Sun 13-Sep-15 23:14:08

My daughter talks in acronyms, which drives me mad, so I just can`t be bothered with them on here, also, as Indinana pointed out, how do we know the difference between son-in-law and sister-in-law? Anyway, most of the time, DH just doesn`t apply here!

janeainsworth Mon 14-Sep-15 08:05:05

DiL's favourite is CTFD
Perhaps I'll start using it on some of the more political hysterical threads wink
