Bit of a surprise in today's paper...

...to see DG's photo in the tv mag (Daily Mail). No, he hasn't done anything wrong ( I hope), but will be on a programme tomorrow evening, Sunday 7pm, Channel 5. It's one of those 'fly on the wall' documentaries about children starting primary school. It was filmed last year and followed a group of children during their first week, if that isn't daunting enough on it's own. Apologies for the blatant advertising. Is this allowed? I'm sure someone will tell me if it isn't. I may regret announcing this if/when he says something cringingly(is that a word?) embarrassing. Maybe there's another Gransnetter out there whose GC is also on this programme?

Is this the pic, gran?

granfromafar Sat 10-Sept-16 15:19:24

Yes it is, thanks for the link. He is the one on the far right with his arm round the little girl. I thing tears are involved from the write-up! As most children do, he has changed a lot during his first year at school, and is much more confident having just gone into year 1.

What a wonderful record of DGS's first day at school. I had read about the programme, we are going to watch as our DGS started school yesterday. ( His favourite programme from very early on was Time for School on Ceebibies).

NanKate Sat 10-Sept-16 15:34:45

Well I shall certainly be watching it granfromafar. I am sure you will be very proud of your grandson.

My eldest GS has just started started his second year at Primary and we have seen so many changes in his behaviour over the last year, all for the better. He was fortunate to have a no nonsense experienced teacher to guide him through that first year, she deserves a medal.

When I congratulated him on being given a big brown teddy for the weekend because of his good behaviour (all the children get him at some time) I asked why he had got it and his reply 'Because Mrs F says I am a Role Model' grin That did make me laugh.

granfromafar Sat 10-Sept-16 15:34:59

Yes, Alima, it is. Only problem is that we can't do any recording to keep for posterity so hoping that we can get a copy directly from the programme-makers. We will of course be watching tomorrow, but annoyingly will miss next week's episode as we will be out. Don't often watch Channel 5,so hoping that they have a catch-up system like the other channels.

How lovely granfromafar here's a link to Demand 5

granfromafar Sat 10-Sept-16 15:42:25

That's lovely, NanKate. My DGS's school have something called 'The Celebration Chair', which I think all the children get a turn in. They have a short ceremony on a Friday afternoon which parents can attend to watch. As we live in the south and he is in Yorkshire, we weren't able to go, but saw the photossmile

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 10-Sept-16 15:56:43

He looks as though he can't quite make out why they've told him to put his arm round that girl. She doesn't look too pleased about it either. grin

Lovely pic. Must catch that.

Alima Sat 10-Sept-16 15:57:14

You never know granfromafar, it may be available as a box set from Amazon before long!

granfromafar Sat 10-Sept-16 16:13:56

I thought that too, jinglbellsfrocks. Thanks for the link, Talith. I knew there'd be something available.

Alima- most probably! It will make the perfect Christmas present grin

granfromafar Sat 10-Sept-16 16:15:11

Tanith, not Talith, sorry.

Swanny Sat 10-Sept-16 16:17:45

Oh that's lovely granfromafar I hope you have the tissues handy!

My DGS started Year 2 this week and had his hair cut the day before. He looks so vulnerable without all his familiar curls sad The last time he had it cut was January!

granfromafar Sat 10-Sept-16 16:29:53

Yes, Swanny, tissues at the ready!

Sad to say goodbye to the curls, I agree, but they look so grown-up after a haircut, don't they? DGS's Mum insists on gelling his hair which we hate. He's not too keen on it either so wish she wouldn't do it.

Ana Sat 10-Sept-16 17:17:01

The little girl in glasses looks really affronted - either by having a boy's arm round her or being photographed at all! grin

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 10-Sept-16 17:27:20

DGS had his hair cut to start secondary school, and the girl took too much off. He told me on the phone that they had 'deprived' him of his hair. hmm

shysal Mon 12-Sept-16 09:54:54

Anyone else watch the programme? It was a tear jerker for me, I felt for the ones who were upset, especially little Beth who wouldn't speak in front of the class sad. Is Oscar your GS granfromafar? He made good viewing! He was very quick to learn how to move up the good behaviour wall chart! A bright lad! How much has he changed since the film was made?

granfromafar Mon 12-Sept-16 10:53:42

Yes, Shysal, Oscar is our DGS! It showed him exactly as he was at 4 and a half. He has matured a lot in the last year, as most children do when they start school. Pity they didn't do a follow-up a year later to show how the children have changed. OH and I were shown right at the end for about 2 seconds as we were waiting at the school gates at coming-out time. Head and shoulders only visible! It's repeated tomorrow at 12.30 for anyone who wants a look. Not sure if a different school will be on next week as it said Episode 1 for last night's programme.

POGS Mon 12-Sept-16 13:35:12

granfromafar

I will look out for him, we have taped it as I watch with my Granddaughter.

My 10 year old granddaughter and I loved the series showing the 4/5/6 year olds interactions at a play centre. Soooo funny, especially the nativity and the boys trying to 'not eat' a chocolate cake (waste of time that was grin.

granfromafar Mon 12-Sept-16 16:39:56

POGS - I loved that series too. It's different when it's your own flesh and blood that you'r watching though. He wasn't on his best behaviour at the start, but he did improve by the end! I'm hoping we can get a copy of it from the programme makers and watch it with him again when he's older. OH and I were actually in the closing few seconds waiting at the school gates, but blink and you'll miss it.

pollyperkins Mon 12-Sept-16 17:43:32

My favourite bit was the little boy saying dinosaurs didnt eat people as people werent there yet - he thought it was in the 1980s!!

granfromafar Mon 12-Sept-16 18:04:18

Yes- brilliant! I should point out that the little lad that Oscar gives a big cuddle to in the dining area is his cousin, Max, who he plays with a lot so he's used to being man-handled wink

Bobbysgirl19 Mon 12-Sept-16 23:08:40

Thanks for the link Tanith, just watched it. What a great program granfromafar! You must be so proud of Oscar.

Lillie Tue 13-Sept-16 07:47:44

I can't comment on the programme as I made the decision not to watch it. I find it wrong, on many levels, that young children are filmed in this way.

granfromafar you could also ask the film company if they have any still images for you to make a framed print.
