Good evening my daughter is expecting her first Baby Boy in December and cant decide on any names. she wants something unusual and has asked me if I can help?? Any ideas please.
all the matriarchal girls were named variations of helen elaine anne mom wasnt having none of that so my and sisters names though not unheard of not very common. my can't be mangled too much but sis went thru years of correcting- patrice not patricia poor brother had no option dad was last of his line and last of that name so bro is jr and nephew is the third have poor friend born into family named case=he is justin and has a business.creates many giggles but memorable for the company
My 6 year old grandson is named Silas, which means of the forest. The whole family love wandering through the forest so it is very appropriate, his brother is named Samson, don't know what that means and don't like it very much.
DS is Joshua which was really unusual 32 years ago but now extremely popular. His 2 sons are Lucius and Troy, both of which came as a surprise. I liked Lucius right away but Troy is only just bedding in !! He's an adorable 4 month old now. I do prefer more unusual names in general though.
There are loads of websites that will help, but inspiration can come from anywhere. We bought a baby name book. I came across it the other day, well-thumbed and tattered, and was gobsmacked at the truly awful names we’d circled. I must say DD1 was lucky with the only name we both liked. We couldn’t agree on one at all for DD2, till we saw a traditional, but not commonly used, name that we both really liked on a stone in our local graveyard. And DS was going to be Adam until a friend of mine had her Adam days before. He ended up being called after the main character in the book I was reading at the time, and I still love the name.
Agree about waiting to see the baby before deciding, my youngest was Amy for the whole 9 months till she was born, and it really didn't suit her so it got changed immediately. but as for suggestions for a baby boy, my ex husband's stepdaughter has called her little boy Bodhi (pron. Boady) and I love it, apparently it's Sanskrit for enlightenment.
Lemongrove - So somewhere there’s a small boy named Maverick! 8 years ago my son was keen for his expected baby boy to at least have it as a middle name. He was overruled by his partner, I kept quiet! He now claims not to recall ever having considered naming his first daughter Destiny, Desire, (not Desirée!) or Shaquilla!
My 4 grandsons are Logan, Spencer, Austin and Barclay. Austin and Barclay (cousins) were born this year and were without a name for a week - it's a big decision!
For boys I like, Jedediah Ezekiel Maxwell Cameron Benedict Ranulph Osten Azari Oscar Hunter Elijah Sebastian Harrison and the best of the lot....James! My DS and DGS both have James as their middle name, as has the eldest boy of each generation of my family since 1752! They don't have any of the other names mentioned above though.
My second son and his cousin were born within 3 weeks of each other. Both were given names that couldn't be shortened, but some people lengthen them. So sometimes Joe becomes Joseph and Gregg becomes Gregory! Why? Cannot win lol. My eldest also has a one syllable name, it has nothing that has reason to be added.
One of my ancestors was called Solomon. What about that? I think Old Testament names were very popular in the 1800s; we have such names as Hepzibah in my family
Solomon Grundy, Born on a Monday, Christened on Tuesday, Married on Wednesday, Took ill on Thursday, Grew worse on Friday, Died on Saturday, Buried on Sunday, That was the end, Of Solomon Grundy.
We had no trouble naming our first 2 children, Anne after my ggmother and Martin actually name of a Roman soldier who became a saint(no idea why!) Number 3, when she was newborn I decided on another saint’s name Catherine and Dad was happy too! Number 4 we handed the task to the 3 siblings and she finished up called after Martin’s girlfriend at Primary School - Gillian - which was soon shortened to Gill! One of our problems was the name going well with our surname - which ended -ly - a point to bear in mind perhaps!
Very interesting to me. When my granddaughter was born and I asked her name I was told 'we're not telling anyone. We're going to try it for a day to see if it suits her'. I had never heard of this before.
My choice for a boy nowadays would be Guy. Love it.
DD didn't have a name for 3 days, we hadn't given names any serious thought as I didn't know if I was having a girl or a boy (38 years ago scans were only just coming in although I had one as Hospital was trialing an ultrasound machine). We came up with a couple of similar names before choosing the right one. DD has since added a second name which most of her friends call her, I'm probably the only person apart from her Granny who uses her Birth name
Remember Big Daddy, the wrestler, he was Shirley & John Wayne was Marion
Many parents who have already chosen a name for their new baby change their minds once it's born as it does,nt look like .....! the name they had planned for it. Lots of baby name books either in the library or bookshops so they could well find something unusual if that's what they are looking for.
