I'm reminded of something that happened in the eighties. A friend gave birth to a girl and the midwife asked what she would name her. My friend said "Kirstie". The midwife paused then said "well you better give her a second name in case she doesn't like Kirstie". She obviously didn't like the name!

Much depends upon the surname as you will probably want the name to sound good with it. In the end, they will decide for themselves but how about:-

We have unusual girls names in our family too. one is taken from obscure Greek mythology. one from a Shakespeare play, and another from the first folio of a different Shakespeare play, where in fact the spelling is different to the later versions! we blame the book loving academics in the family for these names ?

If you are a family history buff it would help searchers, in the future, if families tagged on a father or grandfathers name. It makes life so much easier for us.

My DS was named after the pharmaceutical company delivering supplies to the hospital.

My MiL suggested that my son had a middle name from my family as his surname came from his dad's family. When my son became a dad, I suggested that the middle name came from DDiL's family.

It is much easier to remember an unusual name I have found lately. I didn't notice that in the days when I could remember names far easier.

I have a few really unusual names in my family history but don’t think that my DS would have appreciated calling his son Younger or his daughter Tamer!

Sean and Christopher were our choices for a boy. One of them was used first and then we had a girl next. My son and his partner had Noah and Oskar at the top of their list, but they had two girls!

My GS was William for 5 days my DD just didn’t think he looked like a William so they renamed him Edward!!

Try looking back in your family history, there's bound to be a few unusual names there.

How about:
Alexander (so you can shorten it to Zander, Alex, Alec)
Sebastian
Jude
Francis (shortened to Frank)
But whatever is chosen it has to sound right with the surname and don't forget the initials!
Please let him have a second name though - he has a fall back if he doesn't like his first one when he grows up!

What has a new born's appearance to do with it ?Obviously the babe's sex needs to be considered but who knows in this day and age what with the name Bear and River becoming the norm for a boy that someone out there will not call their son Daisy!, perish the thought, or another name frequently given to a female. A name that cannot be shortened, which it is common to do, and if I had a son would have been registered as Brad. My grandfather was a Bradley but every one would refer to him as Brad.

Our DD would have been Paul if she had been a boy. You don't hear of Pauls now. If it had been now I would have chosen Jacob or Joseph.

My three sons had to wait for three weeks before we decided upon a name, no rush to name babies, just love them!
