Good evening
my daughter is expecting her first Baby Boy in December and cant decide on any names. she wants something unusual and has asked me if I can help?? Any ideas please.

What's the surname, Laine? The names need to fit well together, don't you think? And we don't want any Heath Rowe or Andy Mann scenarios!

Gideon,
Edmund,
Kit,
Theo,
Patrick.

My grandchildren have three names each, as do most of their friends. It seems to be a trend. I was very concerned about whether I would like my son’s and DIL’s choices, as I mind a LOT about names, but all was well. ?

Wait and see what he looks like.

A lady I worked with was all set to call her baby Amanda if she was a girl. When the baby was born, she took one look at her and said, "she's not an Amanda, she's a Tracy." And that is what she remained. ??

I think Ezra is a great name.

The top baby boy names at the moment seem to be Oliver, Harry and Jack. (Prince Harry’s real name is Henry, and Jack is really a diminutive of John).

All you can do is give a list, let them choose, then keep smiling and say 'That's lovely' even if you don't like it much.

Whatever name they choose will grow on you.

Look at online lists of current popular names (make sure they are British, not American , unless you’re American), and then you can see what is top of the list and maybe avoid those because there will be too many of them.

I like unusual, but I think it’s always best to use a full name and not an abbreviation. They can use the abbreviation in everyday life if they like, as many people do.

I gave each of my sons one fairly unusual (but traditional) name and one more ordinary one as a middle name, in case they preferred to use the ordinary one when they grew older. Neither chose to do that, though. The middle names were James and Philip, but I’m not telling you their first names!

lemongrove shock

Fred ( a Grandad name surely?)
Yes, DH's Grandad!! grin
But he was Frederick (a bit more posh)

I agree with waiting to see what the baby looks like when he arrives. Sometimes a name chosen in advance just does not suit the baby.

Jalima1108 Sat 30-Jun-18 21:10:40

Why doesn’t she wait and see what he looks like
Absolutely Bluebelle

I hade a name picked out for DD1 but as soon as she was born (within a minute) I had decided on something entirely different which I had never thought of before then!

I mentioned on another thread that I was recently in a Reception class which included Wilfred, Ernie and Ernest. There was a Gladys too. Names that were popular in the 20s seem to have come back. Perhaps time to start reading PG Wodehouse for ideas? ?

A friend of mine was flabbergasted when her DD named her new son Zachariah Bartholomew.
My own DD has 3 sons with biblical names.

jenpax Sat 30-Jun-18 19:53:28

My two DGS are Louie and Albie both names I like!

Laine69 Sat 30-Jun-18 19:37:06

lemongrove I totally agree they are different, Harley on its own is nice and I will suggest however its a motorbike smile

Christopher (Chris) is my brother-in-laws name

biblical names are nice as well.

thanks for your suggestions

Luckygirl Sat 30-Jun-18 19:24:57

If we had had a boy he would have been Christopher - not very original! - but it was the only one we could agree on.

Greenfinch Sat 30-Jun-18 19:20:23

I like some of the old. biblical names

Isaac( could be shortened to Zac)
Reuben
Joel
Jonah
Cain
Levi

Let us know what they decide

lemongrove Sat 30-Jun-18 19:19:22

Laine Don’t tell your DD any of those in case she chooses one.?

lemongrove Sat 30-Jun-18 19:17:36

How unusual do you want?
A teacher recently told me some of the names of little boys in her class ( I thought she must be joking at first!)
Aramis ( a 3 musketeers fan?)
Maverick ( a Westerns fan?)
Harley-David ( a motorbike fan?)
Celtic ( a footie fan?)
Alfie ( what’s it all about?)
Fred ( a Grandad name surely?)
Grayson ( art fans?)
Belair ( Hollywood?)
There were a few others I cannot remember.

BlueBelle Sat 30-Jun-18 19:17:17

Why not get one of those baby name books out the library and go through them but I think if nothing special pops to mind best to wait and see what he looks like
My youngest granddaughter had her name chosen and as there are two ways of spelling it I made sure they advised me the correct way before I put the announcement in the local paper After it was all paid for and printed she informs me they ve decided on the other spelling ...bah

glammanana Sat 30-Jun-18 18:58:25

Noah
James
Andre
Rupert
Christian
All discussed by my DGS & his wife

varian Sat 30-Jun-18 18:50:09

Why not suggest that they wait till he arrives, have a look at him and the right name may suddenly appear?

Laine69 Sat 30-Jun-18 18:45:57

I didn't say I was going to decide for them I totally agree they both should chose, and its their decision, however she just asked me for some ideas that's all so I thought I would ask on here and maybe some names would come up and then I could mention to them.

glammanana Sat 30-Jun-18 18:36:10

When my GGS was born last month mum&dad had a name for him but changed it after 10 days as they thought he did not suit the name chosen so best wait to and see.

BlueBelle Sat 30-Jun-18 18:31:31

Honestly only she and the Dad can decide what to call their child I don’t think you or anyone else can be involved
Why doesn’t she wait and see what he looks like then she might get an idea if hes a Micky or a Juan
Doesnt his father want a choice too?
