Reading the article on here about grandparents names I wonder if anyone else has odd names given by the child that stuck!
My GD spoke early, it was intended I’d be Grandma and her other GM Nanny. But GD decided to call me Munka. I have no idea why or how she came to it! But Munka I am! I like it because it’s her name choice! She knows I’m GM
My other half, not biologically related to her has surname Rabbett and she chose to call him Grampy Rabbit (Peppa Pig to blame there!) he likes that too!
The other GPs are Nanny and Gan Gan!

I’ve never understood the grandparents who claim to be “too young “ to be called grandma/grandpa . You are one aren’t you? 😂. Seems to be that you’re not too young then. My own mil tried that argument ages ago and her son just laughed and suggested she get used to it 😝

As for us the younger grands call me Grammy and the older two Grams quite a bit. But formally I’m just grandma. My husband is grandpa or papa interchangeably it seems, except our dear two year old granddaughter who persists in pronouncing it uppa! And it’s quite darling

I loved the story about the little girl who was asked what her dad was called ( meaning his name ) and she just said it was dad . When asked what her mummy called him she replied that mummy did not call him anything because she liked him.

I’m Nanny to my two granddaughters, I have no contact with my three grandsons so have yet to be named by them. ( I live in hope!) My DS (45)and DD(47) called my mother GranGran and she is now Great GranGran to their children. I am known as TanTan by my nieces and nephews and their children. One of the older ones ( now 25) couldn’t say Aunt Anne so TanTan I became, the others just adopted it!

i'm panny pat. my oldest grandaughter, now 21 couldn't say granny pat which was what i chose.
so i've been panny pat ever since to oldest, next, now 18, both my daughter's daughters.
and my son's two daughters, 10 and 8 (or it might be 11 and 9) both know me as panny pat too.

I thought my grandma's name was 'Grumphy' for years and wrote letters to her and darling 'Gaga' accordingly. She became 'Grandma' when we came back from Malta and I discovered 'Grumphy' was Gaga's nickname for her. We are Grandma and Grandad....although I suspect Grandad calls me 'Grumphy' behind my back....

I’m still quite puzzled by the terms Nanny and Nana, because to me a nanny is a nurse.

Grandchildren make names, their choice.

I’m Granny Jane to everyone at the primary school in the village. One of my grandchildren’s ‘other ’ Granny’s calls me Wonder Gran - the children told me! - and I’m guessing it’s not in an affectionate way 😂😂

Definition of Nanny... Person employed to look after children.

But informally... . One's grandmother.

My children called my mother Nanny. Everyone understood who she was in relation to the children.
Nothing to be puzzled about. smile

I'm 'Granny'. The late Queen and her mother used this title and so have all my family as far back as I can remember. The older GC have shortened it to 'Gran'. Toddler (very nearly 2) DGGD calls me 'Ganny' so far, as her other grandparents are 'Ganma' and 'Gandad' .

My first grandchild is almost 18. When he was born, I wanted to be called something simple that he could pronounce. I was secretly competing with his other grandma with the hopes that he would say my name first lol Bad grandma. So I had decided Gee was perfect. And the other grandma could have grandma and we would know who the child was talking about.
Gee continues to stick and I love it.
I am also called Grandma by my step grandchild.
And I am called Gammy by my other grand children.

Now my husband on the other hand for some funny reason is Mampa to all but one of our grands. We have 11 grandkids, and only 2 of them are girls and it was the oldest girl that chose Mampa and it has stuck now

Cabbie21 Thu 27-Jun-24 23:15:32

Granny.
My children called my mum Granny, so they chose Granny for me.
My stepson has taught his daughter to say Granny First Name. Not quite sure why. I somehow doubt I will see her again now that her Grandad has died.

Are you a Welsh family?
Sounds like a jolly sort of "mash-up" of North and South Wales.
Nain and mam-gu.
