ScotinOz Tue 25-Dec-18 23:54:52

Hi everyone, I've been following gransnet for a few years now but only looking at the threads included in the daily emails. I finally looked further today and have decided to say hello from a very hot Sydney Australia. Are there any other gransnetters in oz?

Ps, I'm originally from Glasgow but have been here for nearly 30 years.......however I travel home every year?

Marydoll Wed 26-Dec-18 00:10:05

Welcome, Scotinoz from another Weegie! thistle

ScotinOz; Welcome to GN!
Of course! We're everywhere.! Our family came to OZ nearly 50years ago, to Melbourne and I'm now on my own, still in the house we bought then. My Vera died Christmas Eve 2015,: No.1 Son is in Brisbane with 4 of our grandchildren and No2 Son still in Melb. with our only other grandson.
Pardon me asking, but are you a Scots lad or lassie?: only when some of us are in a "jokey" mood it's worth knowing who's in the audience! tchgrin Anyway, any Scotch jokes will be welcome, although that will be a stretch after watching "Taggart" for so many series. Good Health!

Marydoll Wed 26-Dec-18 07:43:44

Rufus, do you know many jokes about whisky (Scotch) or do you mean Scottish, the pedant in my needs clarification. tchgrin, thistle.

Marydoll Wed 26-Dec-18 08:00:34

Sorry Rufus, that came across as quite rude, it wasn't meant to be. smile

Rufus2 Wed 26-Dec-18 08:43:41

Rufus, do you know many jokes about whisky (Scotch) or do you mean Scottish, the pedant in my needs clarification
Marydoll: Relax! That wasn't rude at all, although I'm surprised it was you who took the bait. shock It's an old "joke"hereabouts sometimes, used to ruffle the feathers of indignant Scots. Some get quite sensitive about it too, so perhaps best I desist! Promise! tchgrin
Although, jokes about either are always welcome, provide they're clever.
Btw; my pedant needs clarification of what "your needs" are?
Bliadhna Mhath Ùr tchsmile

Marydoll Wed 26-Dec-18 10:06:20

Btw; my pedant needs clarification of what "your needs" are? : Ooohhh Rufus, that's a bit ambiguous. wink
I'm very high maintenance, Rufus. I don't think anyone can fulfill my needs! tchgrin

BTW, did you get a gaelic dictionary for Christmas? tchgrin

Rufus2 Wed 26-Dec-18 11:42:02

that's a bit ambiguous
Sorry to be pedantic too, but your OP said "my needs" whereas I think you meant "me needs". I saw a chance to turn it into a jokey comment, but which is now as flat as a tack! Sorry! sad Smite me with a dirk or whatever if I'm wrong.
BTW, did you get a gaelic dictionary for Christmas
No! I'm doing an on-line language course with an eye on becoming an interpreter with the UN; the pay is quite good I'm told! ; but the Scots (or Welsh) don't have seats on the Council do they? Could be a waste of time! Oh well! Cheers tchsmile

Marydoll Wed 26-Dec-18 12:23:57

Well actually Rufus, as Scotland and Wales are part of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland , we actually are members the UN.
I hope I'm mistaken in thinking you see the name UK as actually meaning ENGLAND! You certainly know how to bait we Scots.
Oh dear. sad

As for my needs , as opposed to my typo of me needs, my only excuse is that it is very cold here in Glasgow today and my rheumatoid, arthritic hands are not quite doing as they are told! ?

Happy Boxing day.

Hello, have been reading Gransnet for quite some time. Found you by chance via Google.

Glad I found you, there is so much useful information here.

Seasons greetings to all.

Marydoll Thu 27-Dec-18 13:59:02

Welcome megan!
Calling Rufus!
Twenty four hours is a long time to wait for a reply to my post. grin!

Rufus2 Fri 28-Dec-18 10:11:38

Twenty four hours is a long time to wait for a reply to my Post
Marydoll; please hang on; I've only got one pair of hands! tchshock I was touched by your account of your poor rheumatoid arthritic hands giving you typing problems. sad Given that it could also happen to me one day when I get "Old", I've been busy doing Dr. Google searches for a cure; still ongoing!
Now! Yes you're right! UK does mean England to me UKTV seems to be mainly English and we get of course, England soccer, England cricket, All England tennis. "UK" doesn't fit in! tchwink
Are you coming to the Virtual N.Y. Party? Should be funtchgrin
It's now 9.00pm, so I must rustle up another delectable microwave dinner.
Chicken, beef or cottage pie? Wait till I get to the freezer.! tchconfused
Cheers

Hi Rufus2, I'm a Scots lassie. Came to Sydney in 1991 with the ex-husband and 2 DC.
Now remarried to an Aussie. I have one daughter with 2 DGC, one single son, one Stepson and partner, and one estranged stepson with 2 DGSs.

EllanVannin Mon 31-Dec-18 08:15:01

My D lives in Sydney ScotinOz, well the outskirts.

Charleygirl5 Mon 31-Dec-18 09:54:54

Rufus do not worry, you will not get rheumatod arthritis when you are "old" - you are more likely to end up with ordinary osteoarthritis. RA is an autoimmune disease and is frequently acquired when one is very young.

Marydoll you took the words out of my mouth re scotch and Scottish, thank you, as it really irritates me.

GrannyLiv Tue 01-Jan-19 01:21:38

Charleygirl5 Tue 01-Jan-19 10:11:57

Mapleleaf Tue 01-Jan-19 23:18:01

Welcome to GN all of you newbies. ?

Divawithattitude Thu 03-Jan-19 20:51:18

Not exactly a newbie, in fact one of the original members from way back when, I see some names I recognise and lots of new names and I see that nothing has really changed apart from the names.

I have three grandchildren and live in the South West, hi PHOENIX, nice to see you are still here.

Morning everyone, I’m not great at this technology so apologies in advance if this post appears in wrong place. I’m new to Gransnet having just qualified as my first grandson was born on 23rd November. I’ve found the advice very helpful in what I should expect as the paternal grandmum in dealing with a somewhat distant daughter-in-law (who by the way has becoming closer to me since the birth) so thank you so much! I’m single and never married unfortunately and feel Gransnet is a great source of support. I’ve many interests and have great friends but most are married so am seeking to expand my social circle. I work also so spare time is precious but like to make sure I get time to do hobbies etc. Live in Kent having moved from London for better lifestyle and less financial commitments which I love. Would be good to hear from anyone in similar position maybe?

Twin2 Sun 06-Jan-19 23:10:42

I must have missed this page? I have posted in last couple of weeks but am new. 2 Gd and not used to girls ?
