Selling cars, motorbikes and boats ‘so you might have a few thousand in cash’.

The option to use cash should never be taken away. I deliberately use cash some of the time. I paid for a couple of items in M&S today with cash.

Earlier this year I was at the Eden Project and was very annoyed (and told them so) that it is a cashless place.

No Calli, I was talking about the sort of transactions Primrose mentioned.

Primrose in our business I would consider £750 + dubious if one of the trades wanted to pay their bill to us in cash. We do reluctantly accept it but it is a pain in the neck.

Buying plants at a charity sale?

What about second-hand school uniforms being sold by the PTA to raise money for the school or cream teas, coffee and biscuits sold by the PTA at school functions?

Do car boot sales, selling no longer wanted items on Gumtree etc have to be reported to HMRC?

What about children and pocket money? They don't tend to have cards until they're teenagers.

I would always be suspicious of anyone who wanted to pay or be paid in large amounts of cash.

What do you call “large”? We live in a rural area and people around here buy and sell cars/motorbikes/boats etc for cash so you might have a few thousand in cash.

Many people have a sort out every so often and do a car boot sale or a yard sale or sell stuff on Gumtree. Again, it’s cash.

We have roadside stalls selling, eggs, honey, veggies etc and we pay with cash.

Cash is still king around here for smaller purchases.

Totally agree with B9exchange. Too much control is being taken away from individuals. Look at what the Canadian government did to those who didn't agree with their covid restrictions. Don't think it can't happen here.
I have been to several places (coffee shops etc) where the internet has been down and staff are totally lost and can only serve people who carry cash...at least it cuts the queues!
I regularly use cards but always carry cash, I can never understand why someone uses a card for really small amounts.

I think the organisers of the petition might also have in mind the setting up of a Central Bank Digital Currency, which would eventually mean that the Government had full control of your spending power, and the ability to restrict that if they saw fit. How else would you have expected to be alerted?

I was on a ship heading to Papua New Guinea when my card was refused.
When I got home a few weeks later there was a message on my answerphone from my bank. That was helpful!
The card companies don’t want you to tell them your travel plans anymore. I use my card in HR duty free to leave a trail but technology isn’t always foolproof.
There are more options these days, my experience was about 8years ago, but it still makes me anxious.
I’m not daft enough to think that I could take a suitcase full of money to pay our bill at the end of the cruise and luckily we had DH’s card until we could sort it out.
So many points missed out on, DH’s card doesn’t come with benefits.

Banks charge businesses a fee for paying in cash, sometimes it’s easier to pay staff with that cash rather than bank it.

Obviously this has to be declared and the relevant taxes deducted, and paid to HMRC.

£1500 is not a big bundle and nobody can see it, it was in my bag.

Did you think of the risks to the person taking that money to the bank Primrose? Or the chance of your being robbed en route to the shop? Or that if the mattress fails to materialise or is defective using your card would give you the simplest, most stress-free and cost-free means of redress? Personally I would be rather suspicious of someone carrying such a large amount of cash. The bank would certainly be asking where it came from if you tried to pay it into your account.

I took it myself, as it’s my money. it’s only £1500 not millions! As it happens the store offers a 100 day period when you can return the mattress if you are not 100% happy with it. it is actually too soft for us so we are having it swapped and a firmer one sent out next week. That applies however you pay, I don’t need cards to sort my problems thanks.

How do you sleep at night worrying about all this stuff? Might get robbed, suspicious of people carrying cash, might be defective?? We regularly pay in similar amounts to the bank and I have never been asked where it comes from!

absolutely, there are many people out there who need to budget via cash in envelopes and others who only understand cash. If people want to be cashless then that is their choice but why on earth take choice away from others.

The BS probably didn’t issue a cheque book -when I had a BS account many years ago it didn’t come with a cheque book but you could ask them to provide you with a cheque. Very inconvenient except as a means of saving.
