The cost of a haircut has doubled

Pre-Covid, just over 5 years ago, it cost me £12 to have a simple, dry (maybe a spray bottle to damp down) haircut. Nothing fancy, just cutting off the excess length since the previous one. I have straight hair, nothing complicated.

I need about 6" removed to stop it getting caught in zips and being a winter nuisance, just back to shoulder length. £24! Seems a tad excessive to me. We have two hairdressers, what used to be the expensive one and what used to be the cheaper one (the one I use, naturally) and both charge exactly the same. What do you have to pay where you live?

The last time I was in a hairdresser's, I was in my early 20s, for just a basic wash, a basic trim and a bit of a bounce in my hair, nothing special or fancy.

The gobby bimbo who did my hair, about my age, spent all of her time very loudly yakking to the other woman at the other end of the room who was doing another customer, about their latest squeezes and moaning about all their exes. Yabbayabba. She totally ignored me, not asking if I was comfortable or anything, from the first wash onwards. just yakked yakked.

Twice, her lack of concentration on me ... and frankly, lack of intelligence... was so bad that she caught my left ear with the scissors, which was painful, and also the point of the scissors in the top of my head, also painful.

The first time I just spoke to her, the second and third time, a few minutes later, I very loudly snapped at her, loud enough for everyone to hear.

I told her if she cuts me, I WILL be suing. She just looked at me, totally gormless, and she didn't even do a particularly good job of my hair, either!

Then, to add insult to injury, when it was time to pay.... these 2 awful women were still gassing.... I handed her the cash, and she said ''Don't I get a tip?'' I replied ''Yes, I'd like to tip you off a cliff, and I want ALL of my change.'' She basically threw it at me!

It's a pity social media wasn't around then, or I'd have blasted her and her company all over them!

I can't remember how much she charged, but it was quite a lot for being assaulted and not having a good hair result!

Not been to a hairdresser's since, and I'm 60 now! I just trim my own hair!

My hair is just below shoulder length and I usually pull it back in a pony tail or claw clip. With a wedding to spruce up for wanted an inch off all over, a bit of layering, and it was £45 from the nearest salon (next village, they always look busy).

I usually twist a ponytail on top of my head and cut a handful off in front of the mirror, when it’s always tied or chipped back a “good” cut looks no different!

Your post Debbi58 reminds me of a friend who started going to our local college. She thought it would be a good deal with an inexpensive treatment for her and practice/experience for them, not just with her hair, but also helping youngsters to carry on decent conversations, as some were painfully shy and others quite sullen, bordering on passive aggressive! Anyway, a wash, cut and blow dry took almost a whole morning, as every stage had to be checked by a Tutor and often had to be redone. My friend went a few times, but in the end, just couldn’t spare the time.

£23 in one hairdressers and £24 in another. Both were booked as a wash and cut. No drying needed. Both didn't bother washing it or spraying with water first. South Devon.

Cut and blow dry £41, colour and cut £74. The first time I visited my current salon I explained what I wanted, after many years of a relative cutting it for me, and voila exactly what I wanted. Happy to pay to get exactly what I want each time.

My hairdresser comes to the house every 8 weeks and I pay £22 for a cut and blow dry. My lovely husband started colouring my hair during lockdown and does it about every 6 weeks.

MissChateline Tue 14-Oct-25 14:39:16

Definitely nothing under £70 for a cut where I live ☹️

Foxyferret Tue 14-Oct-25 14:41:26

£28 for dry trim cut in Cambridgeshire. I have long hair and have about 2 inches taken off.

Ladyfungi59a Tue 14-Oct-25 14:55:51

my hairdresser comes to me every 5 weeks and does a good job. I'm in Leicestershire. Cost: £10
(smile)

Cut and blow dry with top stylist should cost me £82 but my hair is so easy he only charges £62 ( cost of 'barbering') I pay a lot but my hair looks good for at least 8weeks and can push it to 10.

Dreadwitch Tue 14-Oct-25 15:12:13

I recently paid £52 in a basic salon for a wash, cut and blow dry, it was the cheapest I could find (it was short notice so I guess there will be cheaper) and I'm in west Yorkshire.

Greciangirl Tue 14-Oct-25 15:45:25

My hairdresser charges £28 for OAP’s in certain days of the week.

The girl I always have gives me an excellent cut, wash and blow dry.
My hair is a mid length bob and needs to be precise.
I’m always pleased with it and at that price I’m staying with her.

Previously, I was paying £55 to another hairdresser so am so pleased now.

MadameP Tue 14-Oct-25 15:48:12

My hairdresser has explained that costs have risen exorbitantly due to the cost of employing staff (national insurance increases) and the cost of products, utilities etc. He is also finding it difficult to replace staff as with skilled hairdressers as it’s no longer seen as a desirable option.

He’s very expensive but comparable to other good salons in my area.

I’ll stay there for as long as I can afford it but know where I can save money if things get tight.

growstuff Tue 14-Oct-25 16:00:31

Goodness me! I don't know where anybody lives. I pay £70 for a wash, cut and blow dry. That's standard in my town. I've tried a few other hairdressers and this one seems to "understand" my hair. I'm always pleased with the cut (a layered bob) and it lasts 8-10 weeks.

Eddieslass Tue 14-Oct-25 16:21:26

My hairdresser comes to me every six weeks just to tidy my fairly short hair into a bob. She charges £17...up £1 this year. We're in the south east.

Susieq62 Tue 14-Oct-25 16:22:13

I pay £33 for wash cut and blow dry! My hairdresser gave up her salon and now has a garden studio which is warm, good views and functions really well . I don’t colour anymore and saved a fortune !

SueDonim Tue 14-Oct-25 16:25:06

£54 for a cut and blow dry here. It’s par for the course in this area, as far as I can tell. I am a bit hmm as to why I’m still paying a ‘Covid services’ charge years after the pandemic. Maybe I’ll ask them next time I go in.

Ktsmum Tue 14-Oct-25 16:27:36

£55 wash, cut and dry, I'm in north east

Nell82 Tue 14-Oct-25 16:44:31

Hi Aely! I'm in Surrey and use a lady who runs a little salon at home. A wash, layered cut and blow cut used to cost £25 but I thought that was a bit low and now pay £30 in cash. I give a gift voucher for the same amount at Christmas.

Nell82 Tue 14-Oct-25 16:48:45

Ilovedogs22

If I ask MrIlovedogs22 nicely he'll cut my hair into a nice bob
(he's very precise!)
He tried layering though but couldn't do it! The back of my head looked like a Badger's bottom!
Anyway, he's cheap, trustworthy & he can't say that my hair looks rubbish because of... Ssshsh! Male pride.

That's so funny!

FranP Tue 14-Oct-25 16:50:22

If you got £12 you were really lucky. Mine has gone up by £2 since covid and I think that is great given the electricity cost must have done

Nell82 Tue 14-Oct-25 16:51:37

Oh dear ... I meant a blow dry, of course, not a blow cut.

mabon2 Tue 14-Oct-25 16:52:46

A dry cut every month is £10.00 for me.

Harris27 Tue 14-Oct-25 17:00:22

£25 north east comes to my house uses my water electric and shampoo conditioner products.
