Ironing & ironing boards

I am forever met with dazed confusion and wonder whenever I mention to other homemakers, the fact that I still iron.

As for myself, I am equally dazed and confused as to why such an old-timey practice seems so out-of-date for some.

Nonetheless, anyone else here besides myself still iron?

I iron as little as possible. I must confess my ironing board is stood ready - covered in cobwebs!!

I still iron if the fabric requires it I don't want to go out looking a crumpled mess.
A lot of fabrics look fine if hung to dry bit some do not including my DHs polo shirts.

I iron because most of our clothes and bedding are made from natural fabrics and need ironing, unlike polyester, fleece etc which doesn’t.

Get the creases out of your by hanging them in the bathroom/ shower room when having having a shower .My previous house had a lovely ledge on the ceiling, from which I used to hang clothes, to get the creases out.

I love ironed sheets and clothes. I'd be disappointed if I went to a smart hotel and the sheets weren't ironed, so why wouldn't I enjoy this at home?
My son has inherited this, and irons with enthusiasm.

I rarely iron, less every year. Tumble dryer, then fold.

When DH was working, I sent both our and DD’s ironing out - his business shirts and so many sets of bedding drove me to distraction. Then when he took early retired and later became ill, I did the ironing myself and found I quite liked 20 minutes here and there. Now he’s gone, I still have mine and DD2’s to see to, but with the added ‘bonus’ of DGS2’s stuff - I love ironing his school uniform and dinosaur bedding!

Perhaps I need to get out more?

I have a linen jacket which creases if I look at it. It has been hanging on the Newel Post of my stairs for the past 6 weeks after being washed waiting for me to find my iron so it can go in the wardrobe until next summer.

I find most things smooth out when I wear them, given a bit of time.

I iron most things, can’t bear creased clothes.I spend quite a lot on a good ironing board, a German brand from Lakeland called Leifheit which I can really recommend.

I don’t object to ironing but I try not to let it mount up. OH will do his share too.

I love ironing! Most people I know think I'm very odd but I find it's a great de-stresser with some accompanying music or a podcast. Sometimes, it's just a good time to think while my fingers are busy. And it's sooo nice to slip into crisply ironed clothes or lay your head on a beautifully ironed pillowcase.
If my pension ever goes belly up and I have to work for a living sgain, I'll advertise an ironing service on FB!

I iron more now than I did, because I have more time. I don't like ironing but I do like freshly ironed bedlinen, and i would never wear clothing without it being ironed.
A necessary chore.

Treebee Mon 15-Dec-25 19:10:47

Agree with Scribbles, I enjoy ironing and listen to Jane & Fi’s podcast on Times Radio while doing it. Anything that’s creased gets smoothed. Neither of my daughters iron and they always look neat!

Desdemona Mon 15-Dec-25 19:11:52

I have an iron somewhere but haven't used it for years.

Tenko Mon 15-Dec-25 19:13:02

I’ve always ironed . A lot of mine and dh clothes are cotton or linen so need ironing . I don’t iron bed sheets or duvets , just pillow cases .

25Avalon Mon 15-Dec-25 19:17:27

I used to iron dh’s clothes, fold them up neatly, and put them in his cupboard. However, if he can’t find what he wants he tosses it all about and everything gets crumpled, so now I don’t bother.

My steam iron has become too heavy for me and I can’t be bothered to track down a good lightweight one, hence no ironing for the past few years. No one seems to have noticed. I notice it myself most re tea towels

Lomo123 Mon 15-Dec-25 19:21:33

I love ironing, do all my daughter's as she hates doing it.. I catch up on my favourite TV programmes whilst doing it. Worst part is hanging it up!!.

Grannypanties Mon 15-Dec-25 19:28:01

Visgir1 Mon 15-Dec-25 19:30:40

My DD tells me you give your age away if you Iron.

Smileless2012 Mon 15-Dec-25 19:35:42

I'm 64 and I iron Visgirl.

Yes, I iron. I like to find something interesting to listen to on the radio, a play or something and off I go. I find it quite enjoyable these days. It wasn’t my favourite pastime when I was working though, as I was always in a rush with work things and ironing was a tedious chore to be got through. Now, though, I can pace it to suit and usually find it quite relaxing.
