Ironing & ironing boards

I am forever met with dazed confusion and wonder whenever I mention to other homemakers, the fact that I still iron.

As for myself, I am equally dazed and confused as to why such an old-timey practice seems so out-of-date for some.

Nonetheless, anyone else here besides myself still iron?

I still iron - tee shirts, blouses etc. anything creased and always, always sheets, duvet covers etc. I hate to sleep on creased sheets. Yeas ago, for a wedding present, I was given a 'sit-at' ironing board. It folded away just like a normal ironing board and the seat was exactly at the right height. It finally disintegrated and I have tried to find another but no luck. So if anyone knows where I can get on, please let me know!!!

I iron anything that looks like it needs it, but after a quick tumble and a hand smooth I get away with things that I used to iron. I do iron bedding though because it just doesn’t seem as clean if I don’t!

I own an iron. I don't know how people cope without them for certain things. Having said that, it is mainly my husband's shirts and handkerchiefs that I iron.

I iron hankies ,tea towels , pillow cases and my ongoing quilting. DH’s shirts, duvet covers all sent out to a useful place at the bottom of my hill called Steam Ahead.

Mojack26 Tue 16-Dec-25 16:01:52

Nope, never have or had to,only when strictly necessary.

Scrappydo Tue 16-Dec-25 16:09:47

I hate ironing. Luckily I only do my sons work shirts now.

I think it is a generation thing! Less younger people iron and more of us old crumblies do. However, my daughter and her husband has said that it is always lovely, when she stays the night with us, to sleep to sleep in a bed with ironed sheets, duvet and pillow cases but do they have time these days to iron non-essentials? Different life, different World. I prefer mine!!!

My DD tells me you give your age away if you Iron.

My youngest daughter coveted my ironing board so now we both have one 😍

I don't understand the age comment. She is still in her 30s.
How old is your daughter Visgirl?

I really enjoy ironing and find it therapeutic (I have a steam-generated iron and wouldn't go back to a standard iron). I iron most things and do my son's and his family's ironing too. I also iron all the shirts in a charity shop that I volunteer in - the shop has an industrial steamer and it's a joy to use, creases melt away with no effort.

I actually like ironing but I don’t seem to have much these days! my dear sil is a wonderful housewife, but she does not possess an iron or an ironing board and I really hate to see my brother in some of his shirts that really do need it, all creased and crumpled!

BlueBelle Tue 16-Dec-25 17:08:57

I haven’t ironed for years I don’t possess an iron or ironing board I do have a steamer but rarely use it as most things I own don’t need ironing at all
I ve never ever ironed sheets or towels

Funnygran Tue 16-Dec-25 17:09:08

I don’t mind ironing especially on a cold day. I find something to watch on tv and tackle the ironing basket. I do draw the line at towels and underwear though. My late MIL used to iron terry nappies when the grandchildren were little!!

grumppa Tue 16-Dec-25 17:23:46

My Morphy Richards steam iron has a wonderfully long flex, AuntieE. I iron my shirts and trousers, and used to iron DW's. Bed linen - never!

shysal Tue 16-Dec-25 17:27:07

I haven't ironed for years. I just don't buy anything likely to need it. I wouldn't consider anything linen especially!
The only time I use an iron is if doing sewing, the last time being when making masks during lock-down!

Sadgrandma Tue 16-Dec-25 17:28:12

I quite like ironing. I set up my ironing board in the lounge and put something on television that I know DH wouldn’t like.
DD never irons anything and I’m afraid it shows at times. I have been known to take DGD’s top off and iron it if we have her for the day. I don’t mention it to DD though!

I can’t believe anyone would iron tea towels.

Pointless exercise.!

All my tea towels, oven cloths and napkins are pressed and stacked in the linen press.

Just like bedding they don’t feel properly clean unless pressed.

Madgean69 Tue 16-Dec-25 18:16:00

I iron as little as possible but still do what needs done

Labradora Tue 16-Dec-25 18:19:52

I iron weekly. All our clothes that are creased that need ironing , that is most of them.
I also iron a set of bedding, duvet and pillowcases weekly because I change the bedding weekly.
I'd be very uncomfortable even sitting around the house in creased clothes. Even my tee-shirts start off being crease-free until they become like smelly crumpled old dishcloths because I've done the gardening in them.
I don't iron underwear or socks.
I don't mind the task too much because I can watch the telly or listen to the radio while doing it.

Depends what sort they are, doesn't it? Even as a keen and happy ironer, I wouldn't dream of ironing a terry-towelling tea towel but a smooth cotton or linen one looks like a wrung-out floor cloth until it's ironed.

I'm part of a team of volunteers who look after the surplices etc of the local cathedral choir. We are the wardrobe team. I volunteered because I actually like ironing.

I wish you were near me, I cannot find anyone to volunteer to iron our 6 table clothes once a fortnight.
It is my pet hate to see people wearing crumbled/creased clothes it looks so unprofessional if you are still at work and quite frankly I think lazy if you are at home. You can definitely tell if an item has not been ironed. you are kidding yourself if you think not.a A good steam iron and a extra large ironing board makes the job easy. I love ironing it is very therapeutic, but sadly my back can only do 10 minutes at the time.

Totally agree tea towels need ironing I iron all mine
I also iron my sheets and pillow cases, not the duvet as I have one where you wash the whole things and that definitely does not want ironing. It is a godsend for me thanks to Gransnet. I have never been so cosy and warm in bed.

JPB123 Tue 16-Dec-25 20:55:52

I love ironing! Put the radio on and away I go. I find it relaxing!

Sueinkent Tue 16-Dec-25 22:18:56

I like a quote from Phyllis Diller. “I buried a lot of ironing in the back yard”

Vintagegirl Tue 16-Dec-25 22:57:42

Another ironer here, especially as I prefer 100% cotton bedlinen. I am old school also in that I prefer to dry clothes outdoors but bring in with bit of dampness in them as best for ironing even with steam iron. I am glad remodeled kitchen now has space for ironing board inside a cupboard with a plug and wall mounted iron'
