Ironing & ironing boards

I am forever met with dazed confusion and wonder whenever I mention to other homemakers, the fact that I still iron.

As for myself, I am equally dazed and confused as to why such an old-timey practice seems so out-of-date for some.

Nonetheless, anyone else here besides myself still iron?

I enjoy ironing more so now since I bought a new extension lead and can iron in a more convenient place. No idea why I left buying one so long. It has made such a difference to ironing and drying my hair.

I like ironing duvet covers and flat sheets. Tea towels and pillowcases. DHs shirts used to be a nuisance years ago and DDs blouses. I dont think my DDs ever iron. Maybe one SIL does as he is a dab hand with a sewing machine!

I have just finished wrapping Christmas gifts on my ironing board, now I shall plug the iron in and get on with ironing the bedding.

I am not a fan of ironing, but cannot abide bedding that hasn’t been ironed. I iron most things 🧺🛏️

My DD tells me you give your age away if you Iron.

I volunteer with a young mum of 5. Everything is ironed.
My son in law ( 45) irons his shirts and the children’s school shirts.

My ironing basket contains mostly my husband's shirts and trousers for work - short sleeved shirts in spring/summer, long sleeved in autumn/winter.

I don't have many things that need ironing, apart from some cotton summer dresses and tops. Most of my clothes are easy care - wash, dry, hang/fold, and put away.

I don't like ironing building up, so if there is a lot I tend to do it in stages throughout the day, maybe 20 mins at a time. I leave the ironing board up until I've finished, so the sight of it cluttering up my dining room spurs me on to get the job done!

I remember my mum teaching me to iron. I started with handkies and teatowels, and I remember the day I progressed to one of my dad's shirts!

My mum used to iron everything - socks, knickers, dusters, the lot! Me - only the necessary things.

I iron anything that is creased after tumble drying or line drying. I loathe ironing and am considering getting a steamer.

Aely

I have a linen jacket which creases if I look at it. It has been hanging on the Newel Post of my stairs for the past 6 weeks after being washed waiting for me to find my iron so it can go in the wardrobe until next summer.

I find most things smooth out when I wear them, given a bit of time.

Spray starch is your friend.
I also love freshly ironed clothes and like wearing linen in the summer.
I steam iron the linen article first, then use spray starch and dry iron again. This method works particularly well on trousers.

I detest ironing but love freshly laundered and pressed bedding and clothes.

I iron everything except underwear.

I could not put crumpled clothes on, I would feel so scruffy.

I'm part of a team of volunteers who look after the surplices etc of the local cathedral choir. We are the wardrobe team. I volunteered because I actually like ironing.

I only iron linen outfits I wear in hot weather. Nothing else seems to need it.My arthritic hands and wrists are not strong enough to do more than necessary.
I have a son who irons regularly.

My ironing passionate son is forty eight.

Yes, I iron. I like to find something interesting to listen to on the radio, a play or something and off I go. I find it quite enjoyable these days. It wasn’t my favourite pastime when I was working though, as I was always in a rush with work things and ironing was a tedious chore to be got through. Now, though, I can pace it to suit and usually find it quite relaxing.

Lovin' everyone's posts!

Lomo123 Mon 15-Dec-25 19:21:33

I love ironing, do all my daughter's as she hates doing it.. I catch up on my favourite TV programmes whilst doing it. Worst part is hanging it up!!.

winterwhite Mon 15-Dec-25 19:20:44

My steam iron has become too heavy for me and I can’t be bothered to track down a good lightweight one, hence no ironing for the past few years. No one seems to have noticed. I notice it myself most re tea towels

25Avalon Mon 15-Dec-25 19:17:27

I used to iron dh’s clothes, fold them up neatly, and put them in his cupboard. However, if he can’t find what he wants he tosses it all about and everything gets crumpled, so now I don’t bother.

Tenko Mon 15-Dec-25 19:13:02

I’ve always ironed . A lot of mine and dh clothes are cotton or linen so need ironing . I don’t iron bed sheets or duvets , just pillow cases .

Desdemona Mon 15-Dec-25 19:11:52

I have an iron somewhere but haven't used it for years.

Treebee Mon 15-Dec-25 19:10:47

Agree with Scribbles, I enjoy ironing and listen to Jane & Fi’s podcast on Times Radio while doing it. Anything that’s creased gets smoothed. Neither of my daughters iron and they always look neat!

eazybee Mon 15-Dec-25 19:09:28

I iron more now than I did, because I have more time. I don't like ironing but I do like freshly ironed bedlinen, and i would never wear clothing without it being ironed.
A necessary chore.

Scribbles Mon 15-Dec-25 19:06:01

I love ironing! Most people I know think I'm very odd but I find it's a great de-stresser with some accompanying music or a podcast. Sometimes, it's just a good time to think while my fingers are busy. And it's sooo nice to slip into crisply ironed clothes or lay your head on a beautifully ironed pillowcase.
If my pension ever goes belly up and I have to work for a living sgain, I'll advertise an ironing service on FB!

Astitchintime Mon 15-Dec-25 18:27:45

I don’t object to ironing but I try not to let it mount up. OH will do his share too.
