This weather is getting me down. Is it May or March?

Two days ago it was 23C here in the South of England, hot in the sunshine. Today it is 9C with a cold wind to make it feel even colder. Last night, for the first time in a couple of months or more, temperatures dipped to within a whisker of freezing.

Have I just got too used to the warmer climes we have experienced in recent years? Thing is, I don't remember the weather yo-yoing like it has been doing. My system can't keep up!

Bukkie Mon 11-May-26 18:06:40

It was above average with no rain in April so I don't see what the issue is.

Flippin2 Mon 11-May-26 18:17:18

I live on the east coast,it's sunny today but the wind is bitterly cold, people are out and about with big coats on,it's very changeable

Rosie51 Mon 11-May-26 18:17:38

Well that's you told Aely.
It's the swinging from really warm to really quite chilly from day to day that's the problem. Never know quite what level of warm clothing will be required.

SORES Mon 11-May-26 18:35:44

Aely, last night on the Oxford plain it was 2deg! cold and damp out there and a bitterly cold wind out of the sun today. Capricious May.

Lovely day for drying clothes - my table cloth and sheets are blowing dry, beautifully- here in Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

It’s been very chilly here. The breeze is brisk and coming from a more northerly direction making it feel blooming cold 🥶.

Still it is only May, and that saying “Ne’er cast a clout ‘til May is out” still needs heeding, I think.

I agree, it’s the constant swing from reasonably warm to very cool that can affect our mood.

I’ve even known it to snow (briefly) in June before now, so keep those woollies near at hand 😅.

BlueBelle Mon 11-May-26 18:57:43

It’s been really hot but today it’s really cold

Rocketstop2 Mon 11-May-26 19:12:16

Cold here in Yorkshire, sunny spells but the wind so cold. I know what OP means , your body needs time to gradually adjust, not 'All or nothing' !

pably15 Mon 11-May-26 19:49:07

google weather this morning said Scotland and England could get snow from tomorrow till wednesday...

Where are you Bukkie?
You seem to be the opposite to most of us, weather wise.

Charleygirl5 Mon 11-May-26 21:42:55

I live in London and most days go out dressed for January whereas many youngsters are dressed for July.

REKA Mon 11-May-26 21:45:16

I was just saying this earlier. May has been a decent month for years, this year is abysmal.

Just 6 years ago during lockdown we were out in the garden day in, day out.

Jane43 Mon 11-May-26 21:51:14

It is really cold this evening.

Rosie51 Mon 11-May-26 21:53:11

REKA Easter Sunday was April 12th that year and the whole weekend was beautiful weather. The two May bank holidays, as well as the rest of May, also gave us glorious weather. It was such a shame we were in lockdown and couldn't enjoy it with family and friends as we would have done otherwise.

Bukkie Mon 11-May-26 22:04:11

East Yorkshire. We didn't have any rain in April and several days were over 20C. We even reached 24C a couple of weeks ago. Very cold today though. People have started to joke that we have had our summer.

Rosie51 Mon 11-May-26 22:23:29

I hope it is a joke Bukkie and doesn't turn out to be the truth!
Thank goodness for central heating is all I can say.

Marzipan22 Mon 11-May-26 22:28:47

It's lovely here in Cornwall. Sorry! 🤭

GreyKnitter Mon 11-May-26 22:30:21

I haven’t put the central heating on again although it was tempting earlier, but I have been using my heated throw again!

Oreo Mon 11-May-26 22:42:44

I needed the heating on this morning, it got warmer in the afternoon and is now cold again.

Apparently the saints whose days fall on the 11-13th May, St. Mamertus, St. Pancras, and St. Servatius are known as the Ice Saints, because this period often sees a sudden cold snap. But next week looks better with a forecast of 23° for the 21st.

When we lived in Norfolk I held a birthday party for my six year old daughter on the 14 th of June and it snowed. She is 56 now and remembers it well. Her sisters birthday on the 30th June was boiling!!

NannieChicken Tue 12-May-26 14:09:00

Miserable May. Cold, wet and windy. The temperature was only 8° yesterday. My front door is open almost all day as I'm having work done in the kitchen and the workmen are backwards and forwards. Thank goodness for my electric throw!!

Annitona Tue 12-May-26 14:47:11

I am still using my electric blanket to warm the bed and the winter jumpers haven't been replaced by t-shirts yet! ❄️😄

wales786 Tue 12-May-26 16:09:32

I’ve read all your comments and honestly, I’m feeling this cold right down to my bones! As someone else said — thank goodness for my electric blanket. I just can’t function when I’m freezing… it’s like my whole body wants to hibernate.

But give me a warm, sunny day and suddenly I’m in the garden, sorting drawers, getting things done like a new woman. It’s wild how much the weather affects me.

Here in Cardiff the temperature changes every five minutes — one day it’s spring, the next it’s winter again. I remember after Easter slipping into my summer uniform… feels like a lifetime ago now!

Roll on the sunshine — I’m ready for it.
