Toenail fungal infection

For some reason that now escapes me, Bill Oddie exposed his feet on a nature programme a year or so ago, and his toe nails were really bad. I can't remember the programme, but the memory of those nails lives on - and made me do something about mine.

(Phytex solution worked for me, but took a long while.)

Whenever I have a health problem, I go to my local Boots and have a word with the Pharmacist. They will help you to find the best product for your complaint.

I'm having a go with the Vicks which is the cheapest solution. I know it's a long haul, so will try to be patient.

I have this on 2 nails just waiting for results of test on nail clipings to find what kind of fungas it is then will have a course of drugs looks like doctors is best way

I've tried the tablets and they didn't work!! My big toe nail is coming off and I don't know what to do!! Having read all this I will try filing and using either Vicks or t tree oil. thanks everyone.

OH has been trying curanail for a very long time without significant success so we've just bought some Vicks. Nothing to loose and everything to gain! And it's a fraction of the pice of curanail so that's even more reason to give it a go! Thanks for the tip!

That Zetaclear is £24.90 on Amazon - certainly not what I call really cheap! Also the reviews aren't great? Has anyone else tried it.

The only thing that worked for me was the paint-on stuff prescribed by my GP, and it took about a year for the nail to become completely healthy.

I am using the stuff you paint on that the doctor has presecribed. It's been a year now, but my two large toe nails are almost clear of the fungus. Hurrah.

In the meantime while we are waiting for results, I wish I could find some stylish footwear that covers my toenails but are cool. The only ones I've found are M&S Footgloves that only very old people (not me of course!) seem to wear. They are very comfortable & OK in some situations but I want some choice.
One GP sent off nail clippings & told me the problem wasn't fungal. Later I asked a female GP about it & she said the results couldn't always be relied on & it looked fungal to her. She prescribed curanail which has made my nails stronger but they are still ugly & thick. I used to have such lovely nails too.

Nothing worked for me. I have seen a very specialised chiropodist (got a posh name which I can't at the moment recall) and he said it is virtually impossible to permanently get rid of these fungal nail infections. As a result I have had my big toe nails removed permanently...so no nail varnish but at least no horrible, unsightly fungal nails.

Try it all, although I haven't. I find nail varnish works well

Since starting this thread a while ago now, I eventually mentioned it to my Dr whilst there for an appointment. She didn't even look at my toes (that were well hidden) and wrote a prescription, one tablet a day for approx. six months. I took them religiously and thankfully the infection has gone, unfortunately I can't remember what they were called. The Dr did say that it might take longer to cure, but as the summer approaches I am not worrying about exposing my toes (still don't like my feet but that's another story).

I've been using the special varnish since Feb. and it has halted the progress of the fungus. I had an appt. with the chiropodist last week and she said the nail was looking healthy.
I renew the varnish every morning.

Tea tree oil is the thing to use. I had a fungal infection on both big toenails and I applied the TTO twice, sometimes three times a day, kept the nails short and kept filing the area down. Two bottles later, fungal infection all gone!

This seems to be a very common problem. I've been plagued with it too and have tried Vicks etc which seem to work until you stop using it then back it comes.
My sister's chiropodist suggested I rub Lamisil cream into the affected nails, after first rubbing the surface with a nail file, and this seems to have done the trick. It did take a good few months though.

I self-diagnosed a fungal infection and went to the GP who did not agree. After more than a year, when I had painful excema on my feet as well, she sent me to dermatology who prescribed tablets I took for 6 months which worked but the nail bed was damaged by this long term infection and only a chiropodist can cut the nail.

I tried most of the remedies here, tea tree oil helped but one no one has suggested is oregano oil. It was suggested by my nice massage therapist, paint it on twice a day or put some drops in a foot bath.
