What I forgot to say was whatever the information and advice we receive in the end the decision is ours.
It is our body and we should make informed decisions about it.
I took a second opinion on what the GP had said and found that my records were showing I had an additional health problem which I didn't have and if I hadn't followed it up I would have been put on Statins.
Not sure how long it will take to reduce my BP it is still very high after taking the tablets for 4 days, I'll give it another few days and then see my GP again if it is still high.
He said to aim at under 140/80 and absolute maximum 150/85 and I am in the 160s - 180 / 85-95.
The restrictive diet I am on for the high cholesterol and pre diabetes was a list from the doctors to start with, a visit to the diabetic nurse and a visit to see the nutritionist at the hospital.
This information together with information I gleaned from the diabetic uk website and a monitor got my blood glucose down to normal and my cholesterol down to acceptable level and my blood pressure went down to normal which I hadn't expected.
GP said I have done incredibly well with diet alone and keep to the diet.
I do not want to become Type 2 if I can help it.I have friends who are diabetic and they are not well at all.
The diet for the lady who wanted to know was
Basically
Cut out all foods with fat and sugar(or below 3gr per 100 gr)
Cut out all processed foods including white bread, meats, sausages etc.
I eat Soy and Linseed bread.
Low to Medium food from the Glycemic Index, no potatoes, parsnips bananas, these foods send my blood sugar high so I avoid but it's not always the case with everyone.
Use the better oils for cooking just look on the labels.
I mix my own curry powder, bought powder includes salt.
I steam vegetables or roast with herbs,
fish (steam poach bake or grill)and
poultry I roast or stir fry.
I occasionally have red meat.
I eat cottage cheese and occasional Gouda, problem with cheese is high fat and salt.
I found it very hard at first about 4 days to cut out the cake after dinner in the evening but I don't have a problem now.
Doc said once a month having a piece of cake is ok.
I would much rather monitor my diet than add to my health problems by becoming diabetic, I have heart valve disease but I don't want to loose anymore weight in fact I could do with putting on a half stone.
It's a real balancing act especially when eating out.
I go to the gym twice a week but the plus is I feel fit and have energy so I guess it's a small price to pay.
My DH and I have both been on BP tablets for about 10 years, too. At the start, my DH wanted to know when he could come off them, but now he's accepted that we're on them for life. We don't have any problems with them and our BP is checked regularly and is always fine. I think they're a good thing.
I'm not one of Nature's exercisers, but my general health and mobility has improved so much with gym sessions twice a week that I'm almost converted.
I have been on BP tablets for about 10 years. I am not particularly overweight but I asked my doctor once if I exercised more and lost a few
pounds could I come off the tablets. He said 'no. Have you any idea of the problems high BP can cause?' So I've stayed on them, I've never had any side effects so I might as well just go with it.
Stess is bad for blood pressure and it is important that you take the medication and ACCEPT it and not keep on about it, causing stress.
There is a lot of worrying done by people who are basically in good health.
I think nellie is right. Accept the fact and if a daily tablet for raised blood pressure is all you have to take, then be thankful!
jeanie I can understand why you might be feeling particularly upset because the treatment hasn't worked as you hoped.
A couple of relatively minor health issues this year have left me feeling that I am becoming increasingly decrepit and what has happened to my previously good health etc etc.
I think maybe none of us like the idea that we are getting old and feel we might be "falling apart."
It's OK to whinge once in a while.
As for a Man's understanding of your concerns, I think many of them are really bad at talking about such stuff.
Jeanie what was the restrictive diet you were on? I am very interested as I know my cholesterol is a bit on the high side but I do not want to take statins - so far I have failed miserably to reduce it by diet so am very impressed with your success.
Deedaa, luckily they are not chemo drugs. His medication is mainly for the cardiac arrest he had, He has just come off anti-platelets, takes aspirin, a tablet for his blood pressure, a statin x 2 daily and a slow release medication for his prostate problem. Luckily the cancer will be cured (consultant's words)
after the 19 days of radiotherapy which started on Monday next. I think that exercise is really good for lowering blood pressure and we try to walk at least 40 mins a day for our health.
I had been on two blood pressure pills and a statin for around ten years. Last December my GP said my blood pressure was actually getting a bit low, so he stopped one of the pills and suggested I try losing some weight. Since then I have lost a stone and try to exercise a couple of times a week, and so far my blood pressure has stayed perfect. So far so good, but I do keep an eye on it in case it starts going up again.
Like Flower I think I'm getting off lightly compared to DH with his insulin, anti depressants and chemo drugs.
I do understand jeanie, I have been on blood pressure meds for 17 years now. All because my blood pressure shot up when I was due for an operation. It is normal now and has been for many many years. I am not sure how the GPs know when it is OK to take one off the medication. My doctor agreed with me that it is a suck it a see thing.
I hope you feel better over taking the tablets. I don't like taking them but in comparison to my DDH it is nothing, he has to take 5 sometimes 6 tablets a day after a cardiac arrest and enlarged prostate. (cancer) low grade and treatable. I do feel lucky that I am only on one small table a day (oh and my Lustral for anxiety )
In August after being put on a restrictive diet(I am not overweight) for pre diabetes and high cholesterol I lost weight, my blood glucose is now normal and my cholesterol is 4.3 which is brilliant also my blood pressure reduced so much I was taken off medication.
3 month later my blood pressure is higher than it ever was and I am back on medication, I am so disappointed and feel pretty low at the moment.
Had to get it off my chest and tell someone, my husband is very good but he doesn't understand why I should feel like this when it is just a matter of taking a pill.
