It doesn't seem to work with me.

My worry about omeprazole is that I read that if you stop taking it the stomach produces more acid and symptoms get so bad you have to start taking it again. And I also felt it was being prescribed excessively once it went generic. It's only when something is used by vast numbers of people that any problems seem to become more apparent. But, then again in the meantime it helps lots of people. I didn't take it last year when the Dr wanted me to and my problem seems to have resolved itself [either that or I've got used to it!].

Hi
Just thought I'd add my experience: I need Omeprazole, really could not live without it, BUT the only way it works is if I take one dose (20mg in my case) BEFORE breakfast, it does not seem to work as well after, and then 2nd dose just before going to bed. This way it works 100% preventing agonising heartburn etc.
Hope this helps.

I have a cautionary tale regarding Omeprazole. Both I and my DH have hiatus hernias and were prescribed it. DH took a high-ish dose which helped his acid considerably. However, after a while, he noticed he was getting nasty stomach upsets which needed antibiotics. He had four in 6 months. He suspected the omeprazole was implicated, but the GP didn't buy it and wasn't interested in discussing it. He was referred for tests to rule out anything nasty - all clear. However he has access to scientific papers (he was a research scientist till he retired) and using those and his own powers of deduction, went to discuss his theory with the pharmacist at Boots who was interested in what was happening to DH. The bottom line is that the stomach's acid has a good function - it protects us from getting infections - so with some people, reducing the stomach acid leaves them vulnerable to getting them. But if he takes nothing, he gets excess acid and burning! So at the moment it's a question of finding the balance: the dose that reduces the acid production but not to the extent that it leaves him prey to any stomach infection going. He thinks he has it about right now, which is a relief, but worth bearing in mind if you find yourself with repeated stomach bugs.

I have to say that Omeprazole doesn't have that effect on me. I was able to reduce my dose considerably as I lost weight, but now, because I'm on an antidepressant which has made my weight increase again, my HH symptoms have worsened and I have to take it regularly now.

I definitely don't have heartburn. It's more a nausea thing. Like the sick feeling you have when you are very hungry, only I get it all the time. Some days it's bad, some not so bad.

I suppose the reasons for IBS vary. Mine improved about 80% after a hysterectomy so I suppose there must be some mysterious connection there.

Stacigran I find too it works best on an empty stomach, and then letting it have half an hour or so to let it "go in". The problem is remembering! hmm
