Question for those taking omeprazole

I read an article today about a woman who went for years with undiagnosed silent reflux. She was eventually prescribed omeprazole. The article states that 1% of patients have the side effect of vertigo.
Our 2yr old DGS was prescribed this about 1 yr ago. He has periods when as DD says 'he is seeing fairies and unicorns.' I'm wondering if he is experiencing vertigo.
Has anyone experienced this ?

I was prescribed it when I was prescribed Diclofenac, to take beforehand to avoid stomach problems. However, our GPs have decided to try to get patients off Diclofenac and I try to do without them. The young GP I saw told me to keep the Omeprazole I had already and use them if I felt I needed them. He said that he and his young family all took them if they were going on a journey and if they are away in a foreign country.
However, I have read about many side effects and decided not to take them unless absolutely necessary. These side effects will not apply to everyone, and I do not want to take them because I am on other medication.
Perhaps it would be best for your DD to see her GP to ask about DGS's possible side effects.

I have had vertigo due to an ear problem, but it caused nausea and a spinning sensation rather than seeing things.

Ask DD to check if the dose is too high for a 2 year old, and does he still need it?

ninathenana Tue 29-Apr-14 20:08:40

At 2yrs and non verbal it's impossible to know what's happening at these times. 'Seeing fairies and unicorns ' is just the expression DD uses.
He stops still and stares into space. DD has spoken to GP but he says given his age it's hard to tell.
He's on diclofenac too. Amongst other drugs.

He is under a gastro consultant who want's him to continue with it.

DD2 stops still and stares into space for quite a while sometimes, but it is usually because she is doing a nice warm wee into her nappy. Does he stare for a longer time or just a minute or two?

rosequartz Tue 29-Apr-14 20:13:16

I mean DGD2 of course, DD2 would have a fit if she saw that post!

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 29-Apr-14 21:06:15

I've been on it a couple of years and I haven't seen unicorn yet. grin

Don't somehow think the two are related.

My husband`s been on it, along with Bisuprolol and Tramadol, since his ops last summer for an aneurysm and bowel cancer, no ill effects that we`ve noticed.

ninathenana Tue 29-Apr-14 21:21:25

smile he stares for 60-90 secs if you wave your hand in front of him he doesn't blink.
There probably isn't a connection. I just thought he might be experiencing room spin.

Poor little boy. Hope he's alright. Really don't think it's got anything to do with the omeprazole. Does he get tired? Perhaps he just gets sleepy sometimes.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 29-Apr-14 22:24:57

I wonder if the diclofenac makes him a bit sleepy during the day.

rosequartz Tue 29-Apr-14 22:33:20

60 to 90 seconds sounds about the time to do a wee. DGD2 stops whatever she is doing and does not respond to anything while she is doing one, she just stares into the distance then happily resumes whatever she was doing. Usually needs a nappy change just afterwards. I first noticed this with my own DC. It needs concentration!

GD 4 goes quiet and stares into space when she gets the tummy ache, she has a bowel problem and at it's worst it causes loss of bladder control.
I have never had a problem with PPIs.

My youngest grandson used to stop and stare into space like that and he is not on any medication. It was mainly in the year between 2-3. I was worried he may have some form of petit mal. But not he's stopped it completely for nearly a year and I'd forgotten it until I read your post Nina.

rosequartz Tue 29-Apr-14 23:44:06

DGD2 sometimes gives a little shiver or sigh afterwards, so it is definitely wee-time. I think they are getting more conscious of doing one at that age and perhaps enjoying the sensation.

Nina I took two by mistake this morning. I look forward to a fun day......... smile

Will report any sightings.

grin jings enjoy your 'trip'

lucyinthesky Wed 30-Apr-14 13:26:21

I take them but not every day, only when the pain is very bad. I am concerned about long term effect of taking them :-(

I would think it would be an idea to see if your DGS is doing a wee when he is staring into space as it sounds a strange side effect to experience vertigo with them, but of course he is very young still and seeing things is normal at that age, surely (have forgotten with my DDs and DGS is only 108 months and far too busy rushing around ding stuff to stare into space. Sometimes wish he would slow down, just a little lol

Hope is OK soon flowers

I've had 40 mg of Omeprazole every day for a good many years now and it has, literally, saved my voice. I had constant laryngitis until the ENT consultant diagnosed laryngo-pharyngeal reflux - ie stomach acid affecting the vocal chords and prescribed Omeprazole, plus Ranitidine and Gaviscon advance. I seldom get hoarse now although I cannot sing - not that I was ever much good at it. Anyway, Omeprazole has done me nothing but good.

Lynb1954 Wed 30-Apr-14 14:43:19

I've been taking them for just over a year now,I've cut my dose down to 1 a day,I was put on them because I was given diclofenic for my arthritis but what I wasn't told was that diclofenic can give u stomach ulcers and they did! I would say to anyone never ever take them, they made me so I'll! But I've never seen fairies or unicorns...but it would be nice to grin

HollyDaze Wed 30-Apr-14 16:45:40

I have also been taking Omeprazole for around 12 years (40mg but that dose can be doubled) after my GP (at that time) failed to recognise symptoms I was giving him and, consequently, didn't take me off the anti-inflammoties; that led to damage to the lining of my stomach so, I have to take Omeprazole for the rest of my life. I have never once experienced any side effects at all - not one.

Is it being alarmist to suggest investigating these"absences" in case they are "petit mal" episodes? Incontinence not infrequently follows such episodes.

annsixty Wed 30-Apr-14 19:37:27

Petit mal would have been my first thought. My DD's friend's son, an older child than we are talking about here would stop and stare even when ,perhaps, crossing a road and was diagnosed with epilepsy which is reasonably controlled with medication.

rosequartz Wed 30-Apr-14 23:19:58

I think it would be worth a visit to the GP (as mentioned in my previous post) as this did not seem like a side effect of omeprazole.
Petit mal could be a consideration, or it could just be concentration on weeing.
