Reactive hypoglycemia

Due to the magic of Google (!) I have self diagnosed reactive hypoglycemia. I've had it for years but events were so rare I hardly noticed it. However, this past year events have become much more frequent - one a week sometimes. They are very strange symptoms, feel suddenly really hungry, then trembly, then cold sweat. Eating puts it right in minutes.
Does anyone else get this? I'd like some advice on managing it. Should I go to the doctor or am I "worried well"?

Are you sure you are not just letting your blood sugar get too low? Going too long without eating?

Oh. Just googled "Reactive hypoglycemia". It is low blood sugar. blush

Eat more often.

Go to the doctor, Pollaidh.

I echo that sentiment go to the doctor - unless you are a qualified ealth professional you can diagnose nothing!

OK point taken and appointment made! But I'd still like to hear from anyone who is not diabetic and gets this daft reaction.

So off I went to see my lovely GP who said this sounds like hypoglycemia and took several bloods, including a test for coeliac disease! Results on Wednesday when I also have a fasting blood test and get given a person blood sugar monitor, which sounds like fun!
Any other coeliacs out there suffer from hypos?

should be personal blood sugar monitor, sadly, I don't get a person.....

I have been like that for years that's why I struggle to diet and when I get the shaky feeling I eat like theres no tomorrow. 30 years ago I went on a diet and lsot 4 stone and that's when it started, I have mentioned it several times to g.p who has said ive got borderline dibetes but since then Ive had a test which says Ive got high blood sugar about 5 or 6 but its not enough to be borderline, he told me not to obsess about diabetes when I asked for a blood monitor, I even asked if I should buy one to save the nhs and he said no. so I just have to do what I can but its bad enough being obsessed with food without having the reminder, when I manage to eat sensibily , that ive got low blood sugar. I feel that there s no one to help me. Ive just joined a class for weight loss run by the nhs but if we lose 2 stone we are all being put forward for a gastric band. scary as ive got a hospital phobia

Hello Etheltbags1 I think low blood sugar is below 70 milligrams per decilitre. Whatever that means!
I am sure that if you lose weight on the programme, the gastric band is only an offer - no-one can make it compulsory! But it might be worthwhile finding other people to discuss your symptoms with. Good luck! flowers

Pollaidh my son and youngest daughter were diagnosed with hypoglycaemia by a paediatrician when they were children. They still get very anxious and jittery when they are hungry.

My eldest sister and brother both have the symptoms too. Sugary processed food and drinks make it worse, better to eat a piece of fruit or make a healthy smoothie using dates to sweeten it.

I think you are right. Faye - I don't eat much sugar as I don't have a sweet tooth, but I do think that a high carb meal (porridge for breakfast for example) brings it on. And I find an apple soon soothes it. I am just really curious to find out why it happens. Reactive hypo is reacting to something - and I'd like to know what that something is. The episodes are getting more frequent (but still one a week at most) and they are most unpleasant.
