Knuckles, fingers and rings [sad]

Slip (or thread through using the blunt end of a needle first) some sewing thread under the ring, then wind the thread as if on a spool (close togetherand firm but not too tight) round your finger and over the knuckle. Fasten the lower end with sticking plaster or something well below the knuckle. Then start to unwind from the top. This slides the ring down tiny fraction by tiny fraction.

I have tried all the usual methods, greasing my finger, cooling it, twisting the ring. Nothing worked. All my other rings are looser than they were and slide up and down my fingers with greater ease because of my weight loss. Why just this ring and this finger?

I think I will need to have it cut off and made larger.

My fingers swell slightly when I am hot and I have problems taking off my rings but holding my wrist under a cold running tap helps. I haven't taken my wedding ring off since my DH put it on my finger on our wedding day over 40 years ago - I don't think I could get it off now!

Has it become oval rather than round? Or has the other one gone oval?

I have a puzzling ring situation. I recently decided to get my jewellery, mainly rings, revalued. This included my engagement and wedding rings, both the same size, never altered and worn all the time.

The engagement ring slipped off quickly and easily but the wedding ring is far too small to go over my knuckle. Like Tegan I have lost weight recently and most of my rings are far looser on me than they were. I have looked at my finger - and my whole hand. My fingers are straight up and down, as they always were, there seems to be no sign of enlargement. I certainly do not have arthritis in my hands - yet the ring is not slightly too small to get off, there is no way I can even begin to get it over my knuckle.

Anybody any idea how this has happened? Cam gold shrink? confused

Is your hand hot Soutra? If so, frozen peas at regular intervals.

Leave a bit more time for the swelling to (hopefully) go away. Inflammatory and osteo arthritis mean I rarely wear rings, but like Teetime, I do love a bracelet. I have one large silver bracelet, that covers the swellings on my wrists and I specially like that one.

Hope things improve Soutra -if not, it's another part of the joys of ageing grin

I haven't worn rings for years, and in fact have never owned more than 2.
The opal engagement ring from ex-husband I gave to DD1. The wedding ring from Eddie I can't get on now as I have slight arthritis in most finger joints, but not painful.
One of my aunts had very enlarged joints on all her fingers, hope I don't take after her.

I've got the opposite problem [although also have the large knuckle problem as well]. Over the past few years I've bought rings that now fit my fingers and recently have bought rings with a slight adjustment to them [because my fingers tend to swell when I get hot]. Having lost weight [and been having lots of saunas] my rings are now slipping off. I've looked at ring snuggies [which I might try] but thought I might buy a snug fitting cheap thin silver ring that I can put next to my rings which will stop the other one falling off. I'm really scared of losing my silver Mackintosh ring which I wear where my wedding ring used to be, so I've stopped wearing it. I started wearing chunky rigs on my right hand because I thought it balanced out the bumpy knuckle. They now just swivel round on my finger. A friend of mine found that the arthritis in her fingers had improved dramatically because she'd been rubbing arthritis cream [Pernaton or something similar] into her bad knee and the cream had helped her fingers, one of which she hadn't been able to bend for years and now moves.

I have had my rings enlarged once already and my knuckles are continuing to swell and grow cysts and nobbles so reluctantly have had to give up wearing rings except for my wedding ring which is jammed on and I daren't take it off. I have to say my hands feel more comfortable without rings but I always wear bracelets now.

Freudian slip Anya?? (*Martial status*) gringrin Know the feeling.

I had the same problem as Elegran so now I go without my wedding ring. My family and friends know my martial status and it's no business of anyone else. But then I'm not sentimental over rings or things like that, so that helps.

I'd have them checked out for arthritis, damaging a joint can result in that. Nine years I had to have my wedding ring cut off and enlarged because my knuckle was too large to slide it off. It then slid off when I didn't want it to, so I moved it to my middle finger, where it sat better. Now that knuckle has got bigger so that at some time I shall have to have it cut again.

I have not worn my engagement ring for many years - that seemed to shrink even before the wedding ring did.

Perhaps allow a bit more time for possible swelling to go down before enlarging the rings - you don't want to have to reverse the process.

My knuckles have got thicker as I have got older (and to be honest, my fingers have probably got fatter along with the rest of me). However, although I do not necessarily expect to wear the rings I used to when I was in my 20's, I am horrified to find that since my "rugby tackle" fall in M&S 3 weeks ago, I cannot get any of my rings over the knuckles on my right hand . I hurt (staved?) my ring finger and had the sense to take off the ring I was wearing as I could see the finger starting to swell, but 3 weeks on it seems to be permanently thicker. Should I just bite the bullet and spend a lot of money on having rings enlarged? I dont want to wear them on my little finger as I am afraid they might get knocked and anyway it looks odd on my shape of hands. Or should I have my finger checked out?
