Bit of a setback

I have had a bit of a setback in my hip replacement recovery. I collapsed with fast atrial fibrillation and was taken by ambulance to A & E and then spent 24 hours in the coronary care unit while they sorted it out. They also feared that I had had a pulmonary embolism but thankfully the CT scan was clear. I am completely wiped out and have to start over again in getting my strength back. I am pretty fed up about it, and not a little scared - it was a very frightening experience.

Galen - as Jimmy Connors once said during a tennis match when a spectator told him to "Come on" - I'm trying for heaven's sake, I'm trying.

What a horrible experience Mishap I hope all goes well now but do keep nagging the doctors if you're not happy.

Mishap, I've just caught up with GN and seen this - that must have been really scary for you and your family! Be gentle with yourself and get well soon flowers

I will probably discuss the situation with my GP who is definitely a human being who is able to listen and to take people's concerns into account. The cardiologist is not a listener!

I always find it hard when you get conflicting advice from medics. The first doc I saw on the ward (not sure of her role) said I would have to go on anti-coagulants and would be given a "pill in the pocket" to deal with a recurrence. Consultant shrugged his shoulders and said nothing was needed and would not engage in a conversation, even for the purpose of providing explanation and reassurance. I thought these arrogant consultants had died out, but apparently not! To be fair he was very busy - but he was brusque to the point of rudeness.

I am sure my GP will be able to help and I will try and get a conversation with him.

Mishap, Your last comment reminds me of when DH answers the phone and tells people I'm pottering about in the garden.

I'm not pottering. This is now my top speed!! grin

Take it easy xx

DH was diagnosed with AF after his stroke. He had been on the beta blocker verapamil for years and now also takes warfarin.

It seems to suit him because he's doing fine.

yogagran Mon 20-Oct-14 22:46:46

So sorry to hear your news mishap, how very frightening for you, take care of yourself and I wish you a speedy recovery

Galen Mon 20-Oct-14 22:51:53

DH started it after his kidney transplant. Controlled with drugs and warfarin after
His cardiologist was arrogant as well. It must be bred into them, like curly fur on poodles.
E lived for 20+ years after until he developed Ca colon

Sewsilver Mon 20-Oct-14 23:21:42

Mishap, I wish you strength returning.

So sorry to hear this Mishap. You have been through such a lot in quick succession, it's not surprising your heart is protesting. I hope your GP will be able to put your mind at rest flowers

Good advice from Agus about asking for a second opinion. Don't be afraid to do that flowers

annsixty Tue 21-Oct-14 07:30:32

My best wishes for a speedy recovery from both of your traumas.

NfkDumpling Tue 21-Oct-14 07:33:55

Oh dear Mishap, whatever next? You really should think about changing your name! Sending more flowers to add to the heap already cluttering your living room and a glass of medicinal wine.

Do make that appointment with your GP today - just as you would if it was your DH and not you in this pickle!

Take care of yourself and make haste slowly.

Grannyknot Tue 21-Oct-14 07:54:35

mishap good wishes for a speedy recovery. flowers

Purpledaffodil Tue 21-Oct-14 08:28:22

Oh yes, the arrogance of (some) consultants. DH also has AF following hyperactive thyroid. TWO consultants have wanted to put him on Warfarin. So twice I have had to remind them that he has had two Haemorrhagic strokes and micro bleeds in the brain so probably a bad idea. DH has aphasia so not able to follow this conversation. What would have happened if I had not been there and prepared to question? I am deeply grateful to the NHS which has done so much for him, but the capacity for human error is vast and coupled with arrogance and the apparent inability to read notes, could be fatal.
Go for it Mishap, question away! flowers

Marmight Tue 21-Oct-14 08:37:18

Mishap flowers - small steps and you will get there!

ginny Tue 21-Oct-14 09:05:24
