Bit of a setback

I have had a bit of a setback in my hip replacement recovery. I collapsed with fast atrial fibrillation and was taken by ambulance to A & E and then spent 24 hours in the coronary care unit while they sorted it out. They also feared that I had had a pulmonary embolism but thankfully the CT scan was clear. I am completely wiped out and have to start over again in getting my strength back. I am pretty fed up about it, and not a little scared - it was a very frightening experience.

Thank you all for your kind words.

I have spoken to GP this morning and he thinks that, as long as the planned echocardiogram is normal and there are no structural heart defects, then no anti-coag is probably the right decision, as I have no other risk factors and this is a first episode. If it happens again, then there might need to be a rethink. I trust my GP and feel happier about things now. I have another ECG tomorrow, so will see what that brings. I have no reason to think this might not be normal, a things feel relatively stable at the moment, although when I try and lie down at all it does go a bit haywire.

Phew - I feel totally done for at the moment - it is one thing after another.

Good wishes to all of you who have similar problems or are dealing with OH with same.

MiniMouse Tue 21-Oct-14 12:01:33

Glad you've had some reassurance from your GP Mishap. Hopefully, that in itself will enable you relax a little, which will make you feel better.

merlotgran Tue 21-Oct-14 12:24:28

Try not to worry too much Mishap and I don't want to scare the pants off anyone thinking of taking a BA flight to USA but my nephew in law, who is a BA pilot, was rushed into hospital four years ago with AF. Obviously he had a lot of time off sick and countless assessments when he returned to work but he's back in the driving seat as it were and fit as a fiddle!!

Glad you have had better news, Mishap, and wish you a speedy return to good health.

Having a seriously rubbish day today - IBS playing up (runs and nausea), vestibular migraine turn, and feeling very low - additions to the other stuff that I can truly do without. I am hanging on to the idea that things will improve as the day goes on. Especially frustrating as I had quite a good day yesterday and managed to do some useful things. Hopefully this will just be a low point and things will take a turn for the better after this.

It's a bit of a hard slog just now; and I could just fancy being asleep, but I need to be up and getting about.

Grumble, grumble...........

Agus Thu 23-Oct-14 13:01:57

So very frustrating Mishap when you have a good day and things are starting to look up then....bang, the following day sees you back to more ailments and it really does get you down.

Don't push yourself too hard today. Stick to what is necessary but allow yourself time to relax, enjoy a book or DVD maybe, just for a bit of escapism. Have a snooze if you feel like it.

It's hard, but try to stay positive as things really will get better for you.

Sorry to hear you are having a bad day Mishap, just chill today, tomorrow will be a better day. flowers

rosequartz Thu 23-Oct-14 14:28:18

I know you have to keep moving, Mishap, but it doesn't mean don't rest if your body is telling you to. DH was ordered by our GP years ago to rest as he thought that by doing more he would get better.
If there is nothing urgent needing your attention than have a good rest with a book or dvd. It's miserable out there anyway, grey and drizzly where I am.
flowers to brighten your day

I am resting now - listening to lovely music on ipod. Thanks for all the encouragement.

Eloethan Thu 23-Oct-14 16:14:12

I was so sorry to hear about your frightening experience Mishap. I can understand how it has shaken your confidence but I hope that you will soon be feeling much better.

gillybob Thu 23-Oct-14 16:21:11

It can do you good to have a bit of a grumble every now and again Mishap and considering what you have gone through and still going through you have more right to grumble than most. I'm sorry to hear that you are feeling a bit rubbish today especially after you had a good day yesterday. Never mind these things happen. Upwards and onwards from now on. Wishing you very best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Enjoy your music. smile flowers

Thanks - just tired and weepy today. The runs and the nausea feel like the last straw and have tipped me over the edge. I have to hope that tomorrow will be a better today - I think I have to write today off.

kittylester Thu 23-Oct-14 16:30:14

(((Hugs))) Mishap. Take care of yourself, you've been through the mill a bit, you are entitled to grumble!

Lona Thu 23-Oct-14 17:04:07

Be kind to yourself Mishap, your poor body needs time to rest and recover flowers
You can always moan to us, that's what we're here for wink
(((hugs)))

Deedaa Thu 23-Oct-14 20:50:23

Do look after yourself Mishap It's so depressing when everything goes wrong but I hope you'll feel better again tomorrow flowers

Mishap Fri 24-Oct-14 12:44:03

Sorry for moans yesterday - I did feel seriously rubbish. It was quite scary just being so weak and weepy and seeming to be unable to control it.

Thankfully I am brighter today - still got the runs, but more cheerful. I suspect that some of that was a "come down" after use of codeine for pain.

Resting now after the challenge of a shower - difficult access, blind as a bat without my glasses and yards of hair to wash. OH went to sleep after helping me with it - I don't blame him! And the TEDs fight gets no easier.

I still feel frustrated by continuing groin pain, but physio says it is all part of the healing process and will subside in time - I hope she is right!

Just have to bash on, but it is all slower than I had expected; and the weekend's cardiac debacle didn't help. It made me very anxious, which in itself made me feel ill. All will settle in time I am sure.

Agus Fri 24-Oct-14 13:00:18

It's possible you should still be taking codeine for your groin pain. No point suffering when you don't have too.

MiniMouse Fri 24-Oct-14 13:06:23

If codeine gives you a 'high', perhaps you could get by with paracetamol or a paracetamol/codeine combination tablet? Nagging pain can be so debilitating in itself. Having said that, codeine may also help relieve the 'runs'.

NfkDumpling Fri 24-Oct-14 14:47:02

So glad you're feeling a bit better today and reassured. flowers
Perhaps coming off the codeine may have contributed to your bout of The Miseries but also maybe the after effects of your hip op? I was told it takes at least six months for the anaesthetic and associated depression to get out of the system. I remember having a bout of euphoria after my last op followed by the Miseries when I didn't mend as fast as I thought I should.
Added to all the other challenges in your life you are more than fully entitled to feel a bit sorry for yourself!
And it does sound like you should still be on some sort of painkillers.

jamsidedown Fri 24-Oct-14 21:29:31

Mishap you really are having a rotten old time of it, you are well within your rights to have a jolly good moan. Pain brings us down emotionally and physically as well. It's great that you have got music to lift your spirits or soothe your mind. I do hope you are able to see some improvement soon flowers

Mishap Sat 25-Oct-14 10:58:13

Exasperation is the name of the game here now! I have made an attempt to cure one problem (bad hip) and saddled myself with a raft of others, worst of all being this dicky ticker. I am having to sleep sitting up in order to keep the rhythm stable and even then I drop off to sleep very happily and am then woken shortly after by a thump in the chest and an involuntary gasp - it happens several times before I am able to get to sleep properly - so add in insomnia and the resulting exhaustion to the merry mix. This is all a total pain!!! - it is hard to imagine that I might get some semblance of normal life back - but I will take it a day at a time and hope for the best.
