Just about to go off to help look after our 2 GSs for half term and as I was packing I wondered if anyone else took all these different medicines with them, just in case....

TCP for a sort throat
Kaolin and morphine for an upset stomach
Eye drops for sore eyes
Indigestion tablets for a rare occurrence of heartburn
Ibuprofen gel for an aching shoulder
Mixture of tablets for all eventualities
Prescribed tablets

I just feel if I don't take them I will need them. hmm

Gin

tanith Sun 26-Oct-14 19:35:28

When I go away I usually take my meds of course but then Imodium just in case , paracetamol, and travel sickness pills in case I need to get on a boat grin. Thats it I think, anything else I might need I just buy it as necessary.

absentgrandma Sun 26-Oct-14 19:54:53

Can you still buy kaolin and morphine? i seemed to get through gallons of it 40 years ago with a not-so-DD who was mistress of the art of projectile vomiting ! I though it had been removed from sale a few years ago when the professionals got twitchy about drug abuse. Along with yelllow eye cream (was that what it was called??) for styes. Come to think of it who gets styes these days..... or impetigo?

I must say ....re your list Nankate I'm never further than an arm's length from a sachet of Gaviscon . That's what you get when you abuse your stomach in your thirties and fortiesblush

Tegan Sun 26-Oct-14 19:57:53

Golden eye ointment?? I take imodium, Rennies, paracetamol, Aciclovir and plasters. Covers most eventualities.

Ana Sun 26-Oct-14 20:01:41

Goodness, how did you abuse your stomach, absentgrandma? confused

Yes, you can still get kaolin and morphine. Bet there isn't much morphine in it though!

absentgrandma Sun 26-Oct-14 20:14:33

That's it Tegan ... Golden Eye Ointment! I knew I was close. I think it was found to have mercury in it.
I abused my stomach the same way as everyone else, Ana..... saturated fats, fizzy drinks (to dilute the gin), preservatives ( bacon, salami, sausages). It's a wonder I've got to the age I am. Much more sensible now... well on weekdays anyway wink

hildajenniJ Sun 26-Oct-14 20:40:08

I pack Paracetamol and Ibuprofen tablets, and a supply of Rennies. Fortunately, as yet, I don't have any chronic complaints that need regular medication.smile

Anya Sun 26-Oct-14 20:40:32

Well absentgrandma if you will persist in diluting your gin, I've got no sympathy whatsoever.

Soutra Sun 26-Oct-14 20:47:44

Most of the above plus clove oil ( in case of toothache) Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream for any skin flare ups, Anthisan and blush Preparation H or similar. Oh and Ranitidine for stomach probs. sad

Deedaa Sun 26-Oct-14 20:52:28

Am I the only person who was treated with golden eye ointment by a vet when I was a child? He seemed to find my stye more worrying than whatever was wrong with the cat smile

Now I come to think of it my children never had styes, although I had dozens as a child. DD did get impetigo once but didn't manage to pass it on to the rest of us.

janeainsworth Sun 26-Oct-14 20:53:01

I wouldn't take anything if I was just going to DDs - there's always an all-night chemist open somewhere, if you're desperate.
If we're going somewhere remote or abroad, I have an old make-up bag which contains, not in order of importance:

savlon
anti-fungal cream
antiseptic wipes
plasters
micro-pore tape
ibuprofen gel
ibuprofen
aspirin
strepsils
stugeron
senokot
sudafed

pair of scissors

Always have ibuprofen and a spray for sore eyes in my handbag anyway.

Marmight Sun 26-Oct-14 21:06:16

Always take :
Gaviscon
Ibruprofen
Trimovate cream
Lucas Paw Paw ointment

Unless travelling up the Orinoco or down the Limpopo, most other medications can be bought locally wink

rubysong Sun 26-Oct-14 21:23:01

A sick bag collected on a cross channel ferry is in my bag in case I go on a bus journey or a boat.

Tegan Sun 26-Oct-14 21:30:16

Of course I'd forgot anthisan. Soutra; I've just bought some Eight Hour Cream cause I've always wanted some but I'm not sure now what to do with it confused.

janerowena Sun 26-Oct-14 21:30:54

Nankate are you sure your GCs will want all that lot? wink

Just ibuprofen and pirinase nasal spray.

Agus Sun 26-Oct-14 21:35:56

At present my list would have to consist of

Alendronic Acid
Accrete D3
Ranitidine
Movicol
Morphine
Co-codamol
Aspirin
Lucas Paw Paw ointment
Pepto Bismal which is much more effective that kaolin and morphine.

Ana Sun 26-Oct-14 21:49:47

Lip salve and my AdCal tablets.

That's all!

Tegan Sun 26-Oct-14 21:51:09

Pepto bismol is in my dogs medicine bag along with stugeron and piriton.

NanKate Sun 26-Oct-14 22:00:46

Janerowena all I need for my grandsons are plenty of tissues to wipe their snotty noses. No wonder I catch what they have. hmm

What is Lucas Paw paw ointment ?

Agus Sun 26-Oct-14 22:07:50

Pepto bismol. Blooming spellcheck!

Agus Sun 26-Oct-14 22:35:23

Lucas Papaw is an Australian ointment which has a consistency like Vaseline but contains fermented Papaya which relieves and cleanses many skin conditions, eg boils, burns, open wounds, insect bites etc.

janerowena Sun 26-Oct-14 22:53:34

So do you have boils, burns and open wounds and insect bites on a regular basis?

Isn't it easier to raid your DC's medicine cabinets until you get home?

Tegan Sun 26-Oct-14 22:53:45

Elizabeth Arden developed Eight Hour Cream to use on her racehorses; I knew she used some of her products on her horses but didn't realise it was the Eight Hour Cream. Given the amount you'd have to use on a horse I hope she got it at cost price shock. Still, if it's good enough for a horse it's good enough for me.

nightowl Sun 26-Oct-14 23:33:52

It does smell bad though doesn't it Tegan? Just like a horse liniment in fact. Apparently some people like the smell and some hate it confused
