My DH has sinusitis - can anyone recommend some remedies until he can get an appointment with our doctor.

kittylester Thu 11-Dec-14 06:59:20

Olbas oil steam inhalations or the 'up the noses' (as they are known in our house!)

There is little point going to the GP unless it is a sinus infection as the advice will be the same - steam inhalations!

Greyduster Thu 11-Dec-14 07:10:10

DH suffers with his sinuses, and used to find Sinutabs very helpful but can't take them now because he's on blood pressure medication. Agree steam inhalations can help. Olbas oil is good or you can get menthol crystals from the chemist. They are not very expensive and you only need to dissolve the tiniest bit as they are very strong.

Try a saline nasal rinse. Your chemist can advise.

janeainsworth Thu 11-Dec-14 07:38:27

Another vote for Olbas Oil.
You can also just put it onto a tissue and breathe it in.

Agree with Kitty it's pointless going to the GP.

kittylester Thu 11-Dec-14 07:44:17

Also, Olbas oil sprinkled on the pillow or a tissue inside the pillow case over night!

Sorry if I sound bossy - I'm a martyr to my sinuses! grin

flowers for your D.H NanKate because it's a really miserable condition. Unfortunately not a lot of advice. Try to add a bit of moisture in the air.
(bowl of water on radiators) because I find central heating very dry and aggravates my sinuses together with the above advice. He has my sympathy.

NanKate Thu 11-Dec-14 08:32:28

Thanks for all the advice. Yes DH wondered if it would be a pointless trip to the Docs so we will start trying out your suggestions instead.

Kitty you are not half as bossy as me. grin

littleflo Thu 11-Dec-14 09:15:37

Convo is do a catarrh relief medicine which might ease the pressure.

littleflo Thu 11-Dec-14 09:16:40

Sorry I mean Covonia

annodomini Thu 11-Dec-14 09:57:21

Otrivine Natural with eucalyptus is a spray that helps to de-congest.

Agus Thu 11-Dec-14 11:35:37

I mentioned this remedy before on another thread.

After all else failed, a homeopathy remedy called kali bich very quickly worked wonders for me.

NanKate Thu 11-Dec-14 14:53:52

I've just got the Olbas Oil in and I shall follow up the Homeopathic remedy too. Oh and the cough medicine. We shall soon be an offshoot of Boots grin

PRINTMISS Thu 11-Dec-14 16:41:43

Although I agree a trip to the doctors does not always bring a satisfactory answer, I think you should check out if there is any real infection there. I had a pain in my jaw for about a fortnight (combined with sinus problems), and eventually went to the doctor who diagnosed infection in the sinus. A short burst of anti-biotics quickly solved the jaw and sinus problem, although I am not hopeful that the sinus will not return - it is a real nuisance.

NanKate Thu 11-Dec-14 17:14:57

Thanks Printmiss he doesn't actual have any pain. To be honest I think he has rhinitis where he gets a drip down the back of your throat which makes him cough and sneeze. He has had it before at this time of year.

granjura Thu 11-Dec-14 19:09:02

Yep- Olbas oil in hot water, towel over head and breathe- one nostril at a time. That is what doctors do not only recommend, but actually do.

Mishap Thu 11-Dec-14 19:41:27

If you really think it is sinusitis then the doc might be the place to be. If it's just a bunged up nose, then Olbas et al are the things you need.

NanKate Fri 12-Dec-14 17:37:42

Well all I can say in a great big THANK YOU. flowers wine

DH now has Olbas Oil on a tissue down his sweater and used it last night before bed and he/we had a much better night. Why do we need the doctor when there are all you Gransnetters out there. smile

kittylester Fri 12-Dec-14 17:44:21

Glad he is better NanKate. smile

Like I said, I'm a martyr to my sinuses so have tried most things and that works best for me. sunshine

I doubt we'd be able to manage a heart transplant or anything complicated like that at least until Galen gets back!! grin

Agus Fri 12-Dec-14 17:47:39

Good news NanKate. Pleased to hear it.

NanKate Fri 12-Dec-14 19:57:16

So an amputation is out of the question Kitty ? grin

rosequartz Fri 12-Dec-14 20:01:32

Sinusitis can be agony. If it is, then he needs antibiotics.

In the meantime, perhaps Triogesic could help (not sure if it is still available over the counter, perhaps your chemist could advise).

janerowena Fri 12-Dec-14 20:06:47

I get perennial rhinitis, so if that is what he has, then buy some Pirinase nasal spray, don't let them fob him off with Boots brand, it isn't as good. The sniffy counter assistant said 'but it has the same ingredients'. However, I think they must have upped the aqua a little too much. I hate the constant drip down the back of my throat. It's awful. It takes a couple of days of a spray or two in each nostril both morning and night to start with, but after that he can go down to just at night. He can also get it on prescription, but he may like to try it out first. My greatest fear is that they will stop making it - I almost had a heart attack when I couldn't see it for sale. It used to be Flixonase, the Piriton lot bought them out. If I run out, as I do occasionally, I am back to the constant coughing, sneezing and build-up in my sinuses after a couple of days.

janerowena Fri 12-Dec-14 20:08:11

PS Everyone should keep some in their medicine cupboard, you need never have a blocked nose with a cold again.

kittylester Fri 12-Dec-14 20:14:56

Sinusitis is not the same as a sinus infection! I have allergic rhinitis and have a steroid nasal spray (flixonase) on prescription that keeps it under control.
