Hip problem

I would like some advice please from fellow GNetters. I have been getting increasing pain from one hip joint for the last month. It is now getting very painful when I stand up and start walking after a period of sitting down or standing still. Once I get going it's not so bad and can disappear completely sometimes. It doesn't hurt when I'm sitting down and only occasionally disturbs me during the night. I am taking a 400mg Ibruprofen most days now (just one tablet)
The question is - how long do I cope with it as it is at the moment before I approach the doctor. I don't want to be told that a hip replacement is several years off and I should put up with it as it is at the moment, but on the other hand it is beginning to affect my life.
I walk a lot, usually around 5 or 6 miles a day and I swim regularly so I don't think it could be helped by exercise.
I don't like what is happening to my body but I don't want to make a fuss if this is just the very small, thin edge of the wedge and I am expected to carry on till I can't walk!

Just checked. You are quite right CharleyGirl. He was re-surfaced - or his hip joint was. I mis-read the article when it stated "he knows he will need THR one day".

I had my THR 6 years ago, I have more movement in my replaced hip than the other one, never had a hint of dislocation. There is nothing that I want to do that is limited by my THR.
I would not put up with pain from a worn out hip, it will only get worse, and possibly, as in my case, very suddenly. IMO, better to get it replaced asap.

celticrose - no, no pain in my thigh, and I'm not falling or tripping over. The blood tests that were done recently shows that my VitD levels are extremely low so I'm now taking this as a supplement. Still waiting for x-ray results, but I'm hopeful that the pain was being aggravated by the Alendronic acid which I've now stopped taking. I think the pain may be easing a little. Must remember to ring the surgery next week to check on x-ray results

I go to a health shop owned by a Swedish ex-radiographer from that country. She also suggests vit d supplement during short days of winter. You also need vit c to absorb the d. But 15 - 30 minutes of winter sun on just back of hands are also good source vit d. Good cold pressed raw drink just come onto market full of vit c. Ok if you don'`t have time to juice. I also drink apple cider vinegar with warm water. i check out Mayo Clinic website for any contra indications with prescribed drugs. But unless you have correct diagnosis, how can you know how to help yourself. Great believer in the alternatives and grandma's remedies, but know that surgery may be necessary as and when. Pity my gp didn't recognise the latter. I could have been re-surfaced or replaced years ago and had a quality of life at the very least. Also good for healing scars, Aloe Vera organic gel from same health shop. Fallen lucky with two nurses at hospital who believe natural ways alongside conventional. Never thought of aloe vera body wash. A massive jar of Jasons only £10. Very best wishes for good health all Gnetters.

When I visited my GP with hip pain she swiftly produced a questionnaire which she and I filled in on the spot. Questions were such as 'does the pain disturb your sleep?', 'does it affect your independence?', 'does it stop you doing things you would normally do?' and so on. She totted up the score at the end and the result put me in the 'priority' category, so she immediately referred me to the hospital. It was as simple as that and I'm having my op on Tuesday..
