grunts in the night....

I wonder if the noises described so interestingly could be to do with the middle ear fluids adjusting to the change of posture when lying down? I have an implanted stapes bone in one of my ears and I did get crackles and buzzing for some time after I first had it done. It is usually alright now but sometimes lets me know it's still there especially if I have a head cold or get water in that ear.

harri, I do that, but it's the back of the bus that I fall off! tchconfused

rosequartz Fri 11-Dec-15 00:01:58

Sometimes my leg gives a jerk when I am just about to drift off. Very odd.

harrigran Thu 10-Dec-15 22:57:42

I often ' slip off the kerb ' and snort when I am about to drift off, quite annoying because it means it will be a while before I drift off again.

Well, I think it's one if those 'urge to check' things like you get with babies, you need to hear the breathing or you need to give them a little prod ( and then wish you hadn't when they cry.)
Mr Roses never remembers in the morning anyway! tchblush

Oh, poor Mr Roses !!

rosesarered Thu 10-Dec-15 22:37:51

May I add something different into the groaning/ twanging/ snorting sounds?
Almost on the point of sleep, I gulp air in and then swallow and feel I can't breathe properly, it's very annoying.I do this several times and then drift off to sleep, it's new, and it's not welcome.I guess it's all part of life's rich tapestry, DH goes to sleep quietly, sometimes I have to prod him to make sure he is breathing during the night ( he makes plenty of noise then!)

grin Elegran

Four *s failed to appear in that previous post.

Elegran Thu 10-Dec-15 22:25:51

Fully alert and wondering "What the was that?"

Indinana Thu 10-Dec-15 22:11:39

Exactly, Elegran, it has to be the brain's natural electrical activity, just at that moment when we are about to drop off, when we are at our most relaxed, which makes the 'current' seem much louder and stronger.
These sudden zings or twangs have never worried me - they are not in the least painful, in fact not unpleasant at all. But they do bring me fully alert, just as I was about to nod off sad

Elegran Thu 10-Dec-15 21:44:09

I occasionally get that electric twang too (That seems to be six of us - it must be an epidemic!) The best way I can describe it is that it is like the sudden twang of sciatica, but very short and not painful. It wakes me up as I am drifting off though.

The brain works on tiny electric impulses, so I suppose it is a sudden connection that takes us by surprise.

rosequartz Thu 10-Dec-15 21:21:10

DH grunts and groans a lot. He can't be fully asleep because if I say (very loudly) 'oh do shut up' he says 'sorry' and turns over.

Andyf Thu 10-Dec-15 21:07:30

I also get the weird electrical sound or sensation. Only occasionally and usually on the point of sleep. A bit like an elastic band twanging.
That's at least three of us for collection then. smile

Indinana Thu 10-Dec-15 21:05:47

Oh annie I'm glad my mentioning these strange sensations has helped to put your mind at rest. My sister also experiences this, so it's probably not uncommon at all. I really don't think we've all got brain tumours.... at least I hope not shock.

boheminan I'll get them to give you a knock - we can all be carted off together and grunt and zing away to each other all night grin

boheminan Thu 10-Dec-15 20:53:27

Indinana, if the men in white coats are coming to get you for the zinging noise, well they may as well collect me on their wayshock

anniegold195 Thu 10-Dec-15 20:34:33

Thank you Indinana for bring this subject up. I also get these buzzing sounds in my head which also sound like an electric current. I havent mentioned to anybody as I thought it may be a brain tumour! I am still here though and feel a wee bit more relaxed knowing I 'm not alone. It doesnt surprise me in the least that the dr hasnt a clue - its a wonder you werent told its caused by a virus....thats the normal answer when they dont have a clue.....

Indinana Thu 10-Dec-15 20:28:01

I think I know what you're talking about bohemian - something similar happens to me, but rarely. It's very annoying though, as it wakes me right up.
Another odd thing that occurs, much more frequently, is difficult to explain. The only way I can describe it is to say it feels/sounds like an electrical current in my head, a sudden surge from one side of my head to the other - from one ear to the other, I suppose is more accurate. I feel it, and hear it (internally, IYCWIM) and it sounds like a loud ZINGGGGGG. I tried describing it to my GP once but he hadn't a clue what I was on about confused
Does this sound familiar to anyone else, or should I expect a visit from the men in white coats anytime now?

boheminan Thu 10-Dec-15 19:57:37

A little 'mmm' noise would be comforting. However Jingl this noise is rather louder than a gentle hum, more like an angry hornet!hmm

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 10-Dec-15 17:57:05

I sometimes grunt, or make a little "mmm" noise. It doesn't bother me. I quite like it. It tells me I am perfectly relaxed.

boheminan Thu 10-Dec-15 17:53:52

For a few weeks now when I am just relaxed enough to go to sleep, I've been making involuntary sort of grunting or snuffling noises, which fully wake me up. It's not sleep apnoea, as I'm not asleep and fully conscious that I'm making the noise but have no control over it.

It can be a small grunt, or longer jolting moans. It has got to the point where sleep is becoming virtually impossible and I'm exhausted. It happens every night, whether I sleep on my back, side, propped up or not.

Today I saw my doctor about an underlying chest infection and mentioned these sleep phases to her, but she is clueless as to what they're about. I really believe that being able to have a long undisturbed sleep will be beneficial to my general well-being.

So GN'rs, has anyone else out there had this problem? If so, is there anything I can do to alleviate it?
