Delayed communications - this is starting to worry me!

I saw a neurologist in a hospital over an hour away in November because of my balance problems. He already had a previous brain scan there (normal) and ordered a full spine MRI which happened in January, since when they have sent me an appointment for a CT of thoracic spine on April 1st. I have spent much time trying to chase up the consultant to find out why they think I need this - what have they found? - what are they looking for?

His secretary is lovely and pleasant and has had the letter to me and the GP all typed for the last 3 and a half weeks, but she cannot send it till it is signed. Every time I ring her she says it has not been signed yet.

This morning a letter arrived from them and I thought - hooray, at last! But no - I opened it and it is yet another appointment - this time from the nuclear medicine department for a full body scan (with radioactive injection) for March 23rd!

Having worked in hospitals all my life I am beginning to think the worst, as I know these scans are often used when looking for metastatic tumours.

I have tried the secretary again, but he has still not signed it and I fully understand that there is nothing she can say - I feel a bit sorry for her really. But it does not seem reasonable that I am being called for these investigations without my knowing what they have already found and what they are looking for. I have left a message with my GP asking if she could possibly ring and they might tell her what is going on. I wish they would tell ME - it is my body!

I would demand to speak to the specialist himself! Make one helluva fuss! They can't do this to you. It is downright cruel. angry

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 10-Mar-16 15:08:19

At the very least, speak to your GP direct. Phone again during his/her next surgery time.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 10-Mar-16 15:14:47

If they had found anything untoward in your previous scan, they would have contacted you more urgently. It does sounds perhaps, as if they are covering all bases. I don't think you need to worry.

Luckygirl Thu 10-Mar-16 15:17:47

But I am!!! grin

annsixty Thu 10-Mar-16 16:04:29

This is tantamount to cruelty.
I can only try to imagine what is going round in your head.
Your GP must do something to get an answer.

I am holding on to the fact that my bloods are normal, I am eating and I am not losing weight. But what they are looking for I cannot imagine. If it was anything related to my osteoporosis then I guess they would just do a DEXA. I am holding my breath here. I wish someone would tell me what the heck is going on.

harrigran Thu 10-Mar-16 18:11:53

I found that the consultant was brutally honest about what investigations I was having and exactly what he was going to do during the operation. He even wrote everything on the consent form and had me read it and sign it. If he is not telling you anything maybe it is because he has not reached a diagnosis, maybe the scans were inconclusive.

Luckygirl Thu 10-Mar-16 18:23:02

Thanks harrigran - it is just difficult not knowing. It all seems the wrong way round, getting the appointments for further investigations before telling me what they are looking for and what they found. I really have no idea what they are looking for. I am guessing that the original scan was inconclusive, but I would like to know what they are looking for.

How are you getting on now? I do hope that you are recovering well and will be able to enjoy the spring - when it decides to arrive!

harrigran Thu 10-Mar-16 23:11:16

I am recovering well Luckygirl and am getting out for walks and to the shops. I started chemo on Tuesday and that will last until September.
Try not to worry, I am sure they will sort you out.

merlotgran Thu 10-Mar-16 23:24:08

Best Wishes to you both flowers

How frustrating for you luckygirl, that's a lot waiting and wondering, it's not surprising you're feeling so worried. I hope your GP gets back to you asap and one way or another you manage to find out what's going on very soon and in the meantime are able to stay positive. Good to hear you're on the road to recovery harrigran flowers flowers for you both

Luckygirl Fri 11-Mar-16 08:59:36

Thanks all.
Good news that you are out and about Harrigran - I hope that the spring and summer sunshine (we hope!) will help to see you through the chemo. flowers

thatbags Fri 11-Mar-16 10:58:59

Perhaps they don't know what they are looking for, lucky, except some anomaly. Whatever, I hope you get some more info soon.

Luckygirl Fri 11-Mar-16 12:34:14

Thanks bags - I have to presume that something has been found on the full spine MRI that they are trying to clarify with the further scans, one of which is to a very specific area; but unfortunately I have received these appointments before the information as to what was found.

My GP surgery are kindly pursuing this and keeping me up to speed on how they are getting on.

Unless the as yet unsigned letter comes in tomorrow's post, it will be at least Monday before I hear anything. At least the sun is shining!

Yogadatti Sat 12-Mar-16 10:10:12

I get letters all the time that I receive clearly marked that they have been unsigned by the consultant but sent out to expedite matters.

Luckygirl Sat 12-Mar-16 10:48:53

Well I wish they would do that! - still no news. My DD is threatening to set my Son-i-l on them - he can be a real terrier!

TriciaF Sat 12-Mar-16 20:36:19

My friend here had a similar experience - balance problems. She was sent for all sorts of tests and was imagining all sorts of problems.
In France you don't have to wait so long for appts, so the stress wasn't so bad. I think it went on from Nov. to Feb. , I went with her for 2 of the appts.
In the end they said they couldn't find anything wrong, but evidently had to test for all sorts of things to cover all possibilities.
Hoping the same applies to you Luckygirl.

Luckygirl Sat 12-Mar-16 20:51:44

Thanks Tricia - I hope you are right. He made a benign diagnosis at my first visit and ordered the full spine MRI just to check he was right and there was nothing further to be found. He said he would sign me off then.

This is why I am concerned now that he has added these further two investigations - it feels as though he has found something he did not expect and is looking into it.

The letter should explain what is going on - I wish he would just sign the darned thing and I would be in the know.

Yogadatti Sun 13-Mar-16 10:55:50

Luck girl....if you are seeing consultant through hospital.....call the hospital administrator to complain. I do not believe the consultants secretary has not seen him for 3 weeks, unless he is away, she may be very nice but the consultant is somewhere and she will know where! If he was going away he should have told you. The whole situation is deplorable and I feel very sorry for you having all this worry.

Luckygirl Sun 13-Mar-16 11:22:53

Thanks all.

At the moment I have a theory on the go!

I know I have a haemangioma in my skull - it is a benign tumour made up of blood vessels. I am beginning to wonder if they have found one in my thoracic spine (which is where they commonly occur) and this is why they have ordered a CT thoracic spine to get a closer look, and a full body bone scan to see if there are others to be found elsewhere.

I will be interested to see if my theory is right - but it is the only benign theory I can imagine that might cause a neurologist to order a bone scan. I do not want to speculate on other possible reasons. I quite like this one!

We wait and see!

Imperfect27 Sun 13-Mar-16 13:48:02

So sorry you have been left to worry *Luckygirl". My first thought is that they are simply being thorough. I had a call back and several extra x-rays for breast cancer recently and l began to worry, but all was well. I hope they soon give you the exanation you need for greater peace of mind xx

Luckygirl Mon 14-Mar-16 13:35:31

Well the surgery rang this morning to say that they have followed this up for me and spoken to the consultant's secretary this morning who has said that I will get a letter by the end of the week! I am lost for words!

I have this bone scan next week, but I am not going to go if I still do not know why it has been ordered. If I have not heard by then I will cancel it and reschedule once I know what is going on.

I really feel totally exasperated by this - it seems so wrong and thoughtless. But what the heck can I do? I have tried it from all angles now. I do not want to read the riot act and feel uncomfortable when I next see the guy - I really do not need that.

It is over 8 weeks since the original scan; and about 4 weeks since I first spoke to the secretary and she said that the letter would be with me in a couple of days. She has said this 4 or 5 times now and is now saying "by the end of the week."

Jane10 Mon 14-Mar-16 13:43:07

Phone and ask to speak to the consultant?

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 14-Mar-16 13:58:09

I don't think you should cancel the bone scan. Hopefully the letter will arrive by the end of this week, and you will be, at last, put in the picture. Try to think of something else. Not easy, and probably futile to suggest it. I think if there was anything to worry about, things would be happening a lot more speedily.

They are just being thorough.
