A diabetic diet

Although I do not have diabetes I may get it in the future because of taking steroids.

I have reviewed my diet and have gone onto a moderate carb/sugar eating plan. However the more of a diabetic diet I can eat the better. However I am not much of a cook and if there is a short way to do something I will take it.

I have looked up a diabetic rice pud and it says make with cooked rice, would that be pudding rice ? Do any of you make it?

Can anyone recommend a low sugar or sugar free jam, couldn't find any in Sainsbury's ?

Is sugar free jelly ok ?

Thanks.

My sister like you is on steroids. She has stopped sugar entirely including being very careful with high sugar fruits and alcohol. She avoids anything sweet including that made with sugar substitutes. My DH has recently been told he has a high blood sugar level, and we did exactly the same. A sugar free diet got his blood sugar back to normal within 6-8 weeks.

My DH has type 2 diabetes. I have bought sugar free jam in Tesco and also Holland & Barrett. He makes his own rice pudding but I'm not sure it's a diabetic version - he uses pudding rice.

I used to manage a team of 9 Diabetic Specialist Nurses and their advice to people who may be at risk of Type 2 diabetes and those who have already developed it is to eat a healthy diet (as described on the NHS Choices website) and not to buy specific diabetic foods.

DH has mild diabetes, we have never had any diet advice at all. We have a good diet anyway, neither of us has a sweet tooth so we rarely eat biscuits, sweets or cakes, even the yoghourt DH eats is the plain unsweetened variety. We, generally, do not eat between meals and I cook from scratch.

My mantra is simply 'Eat well, not too much, most of it plants', Its origin is with the American food writer, Michael Pollan.

DH has had diabetes for nearly 10 years and it is still ticking along at the lowest medication level, so our diet is clearly doing him no harm.

I have been a type 2diabetic for nearly 16 years now and the best advice I can give anyone is to keep your carbs low, most carbs , I.E potatoes , bread , rice , pasta have a very hi GI sending sugars up . I tend to do a high fat low carb diet now and my blood sugars are on the good side.
