Bowel Screening

I think this screening is offered from the age of 60, every 2 years.
If you move house, the GP surgery informs them and the test packs arrive as usual BUT I have just found out that as soon as you reach 75 you get taken off the scheme and have to reapply! Call 0800 707 6060 to register.
I now think this free test is even more important having spoken to a couple of patients in the hospice where I volunteer- neither of them had had symptoms at all but a problem was picked up in this test. These particular patients were very unlucky as their cancer was caught too late.
As far as I'm concerned, if it's available, have it done!

A few years ago I had a positive screen which meant I had to do a second test at home and then go for a colonoscopy. It turned out that I had a polyp which was removed at the time and the test showed it was benign. My whole experience was very positive. I spoke at great length on the telephone to a sister working on the screening team who explained everything to me about the procedure etc. When dI went for the colonoscopy she was there to greet me and was also present when the procedure was done. When I had the diet sheet come I actually started it all a day early and had no problem taking what seemed like gallons of laxative mixture! I was not totally knocked out and I am proud to say that when looking at the screen the surgeon announced it was a lovely clean bowel!! He talked all the way through the procedure and explained what he was doing - all very comforting. This was in Bridgend, South Wales.
