Maltesers at 6 months

I sat down for a rest in Tescos yesterday. I was seated by a very young mum and her baby, who was about 6 months old. It was lunch time and Mum was eating a pasty of some kind, she had just bought.

The baby was given 2 Maltesers, one in each hand.He enjoyed them and smiled at me while chocolate dripped down his face He was totally aignored by mum who was talking to friends. When he finished those he made a sound and got 2 more. Eventually he had 12!!

I felt sad that mum thought this was appropriate for a young baby and hoped it wasn't lunch. She had a poverty of expectation for her child that worried me. I keep thinking about the two of them. Am I just being daft?

yes thabags - 3 bags full and pull the other one too...

The most concerning part is being totally ignored for that long, including whilst eating a type of food that a child could easily choke on. But I can't imagine that a baby would eat 12 Maltesers after a good healty meal...

as always being so judgemental about being 'judgemental' ;)

Just recognising judgmentalism when I see it, gj.

The baby in the OP obviously wasn't "totally ignored" by his mother because when he requested more maltesers his mum, so we're told, gave him some more. She was listening to him and responding. Even if one doesn't approve of the maltesers bit, saying she was "totally ignoring" him is manifestly untrue and whoever said she was totally ignoring him was making a judgment about the mother's mothering at that particular moment in time.

We perfect mothers, of course, never did anything like that just for a bit of peace [sarc] when we were worn out.

Once when I was fairly heavily pregnant with DD2 and pushing DD1 in the buggy (I think we were going to the library or something), I felt really weak. Since I was near a shop I decided to get something to eat. I bought a Mars bar, unwrapped it and ate it there and then in the street. I bet some people, knowing absolutely nothing about me other than what they could see right then, would have jumped to erroneous conclusions.

As it happens, that was the only time in my life I ever did that.

I didn't give DD1 any because she was facing away from me. If she'd been able to see me eating and wanted some, I'd have given her a bit.

PS I felt fine after that. You's'll be pleased to hear that, I know ?

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 21-Sept-16 17:22:35

I'm just surprised that the OP sat there and counted! grin

" Mum was eating a pasty of some sort"

Didn't you ask her?

Ana Wed 21-Sept-16 17:25:05

I was too! Mustn't have taken her eyes off that baby... grin

It is not the issue of innapropriate diet that worries me here although it is a concern, it is the risk of choking and the mother should have been aware of that.

Which leads my to question, what sort of understanding about child rearing this parent has learned, or lacks, or can't be bothered to think about.

In a Restaurant about a year ago an elderly lady (well certainly a good bit older than me) at the next table automatically put her hand around the corner of the table as she saw DGS1s head approaching. I still have those instincts.

I think maltesers melt, even the crunchy bit, when introduced to warmth. Might have to buy some and experiment. I no longer keep a box under my bed and it's so long since I had any that I can't remember how they behave.

If anyone has any to hand, please put one in your mouth or hold one in your fist like a baby and get some of it into your mouth like a six month old would (make sure to smear plenty of choc about on the outside and everything within reach; you can drop a bit too) and report back.

Wouldn't the mum have heard a coughing sound or strained breathing?

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 21-Sept-16 17:58:53

We shared a bag of maltesers with DD1 when she was about two. We were on holiday at the seaside. She was in her pushchair and I was pushing from behind. I heard the gagging! Can't remember what we did. I think she coped herself. shock

Luckygirl Wed 21-Sept-16 18:13:19

The first time I ever made myself feel sick through over-eating was at Christmas when I was about 5 and I secretly scoffed a whole box of Maltesers!

Stansgran Wed 21-Sept-16 18:17:24

Why do I now want to go out in the car wasting petrol and buy some Maltesers at the garage?

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 21-Sept-16 18:19:22

It's just too much isn't it Stansgran. grin

DeaDomesticus Wed 21-Sept-16 18:19:53

Taking this to the extreme, I'm currently in Kansas for the birth of my first Grandchild who arrived at the weekend. Browsing at the tv I was shocked to see that they do root canal fillings on children's teeth here!,,WTF! (Excuse my French!)

Ana Wed 21-Sept-16 18:19:54

To comply with thatbags's suggestion that we test them for meltability - why else, Stansgran? grin

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 21-Sept-16 18:45:31

OMG Dead That is awful!

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 21-Sept-16 18:47:01

DeaDomesticus

Apologies again.

To be honest we can't police the world, we don't know the facts the child may have been older than six months that was just the original posters estimation, he may be having a home cooked meal when they got back. I think as older people we are all too quick to judge the young people of today I m sure a lot of us were making mistakes in the beginning none of us were perfect we did what we thought was right and maybe we were lucky, but judging by the many complaints about daughters, sons, and in laws coming up on many threads perhaps we didn't all do as good jobs as we like to think

Just a thought

Morgana Wed 21-Sept-16 19:01:53

Should we be speaking out when we see these things happening? Just a thought!

Juney64 Wed 21-Sept-16 19:02:37

This thread is hilarious lol.

Jalima Wed 21-Sept-16 19:09:17

I hope I'm not judgmental - just rather shocked!

Jalima Wed 21-Sept-16 19:14:08

I do like a good pastie!

My teeth are probably full of fillings from eating crunchie bars when I was young (but not 6 months old)
The sugary filling tends to stick more than chocolate
As do those nice healthy little boxes of raisins
