Cheese is the new poison

According to a leading American quack doctor cheese is addictive and it is what is making us fat, not sugar. His name's Neal Barnard and he has written a book called The Cheese Trap: How Breaking a Surprising Addiction Will Help You Lose Weight, Gain Energy, and Get Healthy.

One of the comments after the article I've just read does point out that he's American and that Americans don't understand cheese.

I think cheese can be addictive; if I try to lose weight on a low calorie diet it is cheese I crave more than anything else.

Scientists claim that cheese is as addictive as drugs because of a chemical called casein. This is found in dairy products and can trigger the brain's opioid receptors, which are responsible for addiction

"Dessert was Stilton, Manchego, and Brie with red onion marmalade and oatcakes - what the hell do Americans know about cheese , in fact about decent food in general!" Nothing!

American cheese is viler than vile disgusting slimey processed stuff just like their chocolate. Extra strong crunchy English ched sliced very very thinly. YUM!

AraabraWhoa! Not too prejudice about Americans now are you. They don't walk much and are plump? Nothing like lumping them into one big category. You are talking silly now. That is definitely not true. And the grocery stores have wonderful imported cheese aisles. They are expensive so maybe that is why some Americans make and buy the cheaper stuff. My goodness America is not a third world country.

The USA is just the same as the UK. Plenty of good food, but plenty of really cheap horrible stuff too. Just on a larger scale.

MeltonMatthew that sounds amazing. We live near Cheddar... home of amazing cheese. There was a wonderful programme on Points West about the caves that are used for cheese 'ageing'!

I wish people would not paint all Americans with the brush that they are fat, lazy, know nothing about cheese or other things. That's an unfair generalisation as it cannot possibly apply to all. Spend some time on Quora if you want some examples. I am very unhappy with the state of the US right now, but most American food is very nice. I miss Maine lobster like crazy, there is nothing like it. And huge Gulf shrimp, Chesapeake Bay crabs. And organic beef and lamb from a butcher, just like here, is lovely.

My only food complaint is pork...American pork is almost a pure white meat and little flavour. hmm Here pork and pork sausage tastes like the farmyard... and that is how it should be. grin

Just looked at the picture of 'oven bottoms', and up here in Geordie land they are called 'Stotties'.they are delicious, and my favourite sandwich is made with very strong cheddar with piccalilli spread over it.

I saw that too.
The best cheese and the best regional news programme grin

not sure I agree there though, have you ever swilled down a farmyard? shock

starlily106 Mon 06-Feb-17 12:14:06

Should have said strong Welsh Collier cheese

Lewlew Mon 06-Feb-17 12:30:30

Jalima I have been in a farmyard here, which is what it reminded me of. That was more likely when I was first exposed to sausage in a full English breakfast. It reminded me of pate. US sausage, even the Italian ones are very bland.

I do like Points West... I run into Garmston quite often as I live near the BBC. Used to see Richard Angwin often and have a chat before he moved to AlJazeera.

Jalima Mon 06-Feb-17 12:48:07

My DC used to tease me about Richard Angwin
(Mum loves Richard Angwin blush)
No - he is just very interesting and informative.

DH wants to start a campaign to get Ian down from the roof.

I am thinking of writing book saying that fruit and vegetables are the cause of all our ills and if only you ate a diet devoid of these food items your life could be entirely different.

That way it would be possible to prove that every foodstuff known to humanity is bad for us and that the only way forward is to stop eating altogether.

Nelliemoser Mon 06-Feb-17 17:30:41

I have just poisoned myself with 3 pickled onions and a chunk of strong cheddar while I was cooking dinner.

I should never have opened this thread - I'm now craving the wonderful Hawes Wensleydale lurking in the fridge, and once I give in it won't stop at a dainty slice...

I think cheese is addictive, but it's one of life's pleasures and I wouldn't dream of coming off it grin. When we went to China and scoffed huge amounts of Chinese food at every meal, and drank lots of beer, I managed to lose 4 pounds in a fortnight. I put it all down to having no cheese at all. I still couldn't wait to get the cheese on toast under the grill as soon as I got home!

Nelliemoser Mon 06-Feb-17 18:21:43

This thread is addictive "food porn" I think it ought to be deleted. grin Before I get the cheese out again.

Iam64 Mon 06-Feb-17 18:25:39

I've not dared to catch up with all 5 pages of this thread. I apologise, I don't usually post unless I'm up to date. However, I've just posted a shockingly indulgent cauli cheese recipe on another thread......

Lewlew Mon 06-Feb-17 21:00:14

Jalima I cringe at the 'producer's script' that tells them to ask Ian if it's wet up on the roof when it's freakin' tipping down!! That and other inane comments, you can tell the presenters hate them, but it's in their contracts to march in-step. hmm

Lewlew Mon 06-Feb-17 21:01:19

Iam64 what thread...where, yes please? I am always interested in cauli-cheese!

Got cholesterol test I referred to upthread back today. It has dropped from 5 7in April to 5 2 .It has to be due to the weight loss ,which is definitely due in part to eating much less cheese .I daren't have what I call 'posh eating cheese' in the house as I cannot resist it .I found it hard to stop eating it at a friend's house on Sunday and at my daughter's on Monday .Once I start I find it really hard to say 'enough'.
