Does anyone else suffer from this? I have it in both hips and it is giving me hell today. I can't take NSAI, even paracetamol upset me. I had a steroid injection a year ago which didn't work. Seeing consultant again next month.

Just wondered what other people have found to help

I was diagnosed this in one hip by my GP , but turns out I have Osteoarthritis and am on the list for replacement , get a scan done to make sure it really is bursitis . I took so many tablets for many years I ended up with bleeding gut and anaemia so now can just about tolerate Paracetamol

I've had steroid injections in both hips at different times and thankfully they worked. OH had one that wasn't effective at all, due to medical conditions he has to manage with paracetamol, not very successfully.

I was diagnosed with bursitis in one hip three or four years ago. I had a steroid injection 18 months ago, it made no difference. I've found Pilates and yoga help by strengthning muscles and keeping my hips as mobile as poss. I try to avoid pain killers and can take anti inflammatories because I'm on anti coagulants. The joys of leaving our thirties ?

I've has it twice, thanks osteoarthritis, the specialist did say it it keeps recurring they can shave the nodules off my hip so the burses don't keep getting trapped. Luckily for me the steroid injections help .

I had bursitis in one shoulder (diagnosed by ultrasound scan) and decided against a steroid injection, instead I had physiotherapy and did the exercises religiously though it was painful - and it cleared up almost completely within a month; might be worth asking your doctor?

Iam64 Sun 23-Jul-17 12:41:47

I did the physio Devongirl but I suspect the chronic nature of the bursitis is due to inflammatory Arthritis

devongirl Sun 23-Jul-17 12:45:16

Sorry to hear that, because I remember how excruciatingly painful it was. I 've managed to avoid arthritis so far touch wood.

Tizliz Sun 23-Jul-17 15:35:27

I have had it nearly 2 years now, and I do my exercise every day. Not too bad today. I am worried about the future. I had a migraine on Tuesday which kept me in bed nearly all day, that night the pain was really bad because I had no exercise at all - so what happens if it gets worse and I can't exercise ? Catch 22. Sorry for being so depressed. Am taking OH with me to the consultant so that he understands more. It is not arthritis as I have been X-rayed.

I was diagnosed with bursitis in my left hip after I eventually went to the doctor presuming it was arthritis and I was on the slippery slope to having a replacement. Most mornings I woke up with a very painful hip and some nights I just couldn't sleep because of the pain. The doctor's only advice was to sleep on my right side. Well, that's impossible as I am a very restless sleeper, so I put some pillows under the sheet to lie on which really helped and I used them for several weeks. Since then we have swapped the mattress for our spare one which was softer and I haven't had any pain since.

What exercises do you do Tizliz? I would be interested to know in case mine does recur.

Has anyone tried Chinagell? My yoga teacher sells it. I don't know what's in it but if my hip wakes me and I massage some into the painful area, it creates warmth and decreases the pain (to quote Mr Trump - it decreases the pain Bigly)

Like aggie my bursitis was due to a deteriorating hip which I didn't know I had until then. My hip was successfully replaced which sorted out the problem. The bursitis was very painful and gave me some very bad nights. I had bursitis in one of my heels as a teenager and that too was very painful. Hope you get some relief tizliz

Sadly I think you have to quite firmly insist on X-Ray/scan so you can really know what's going on in there then a proper decision can be made-most likely a replacement. DS, a doc, says being delayed having proper investigations is like being held in a holding pattern over Heathrow-at the mo you're not on any lists with the clock ticking.

Grannaby I am not ignoring your question, just can't find the sheet. You could look up on google there are some good ones there.

I have bursitis in both hips, It went away once but earlier this year it was very painful and I couldn't sleep or lie down comfortably. I have had some physio but it wasn't wonderful. I have found that keeping as active as I can and keeping weight off helps. I do sympathise its a horrible pain and very difficult to get comfortable. I am resisting injections as they have such a poor success rate.

Suffered for months with it in my hip, after trying all the usual physio etc my physiotherapist suggested acupuncture, was sceptical and also didnt fancy needles but it worked for me.That was 3 years ago and no recurrence so far.

J52 Fri 28-Jul-17 10:01:44

I have just developed Bursitis in my left hip, I don't take pain relief med. very well so I'm also considering the acupuncture route.

Tizliz Fri 28-Jul-17 11:20:50

Hadn't thought about acupuncture. Will see what consultant says next month. I do sometimes take amitriptyline at nights. It helps me sleep but, probably because I don't move about so much, I am even stiffer in the mornings.

Bad again today possibly because the only walking I did yesterday was on pavements - filling in time whilst dog was at vet's for a scan. I also find travelling painful and yesterday was total of 1 1/2 hrs in car.

My total left knee replacement last March has helped take the strain as the injection I had for bursitis just before only worked for a couple of months. At least it helped until my knee had recovered. The problem is the bursitis is in the right hip and the knee on that side isn't too good either, so I'm psyching myself up to go back to the GP as I fear he'll say to give it time it's all due to the new knee. I'm getting old, I don't have that much time!

(Acupuncture sounds interesting. It may be worth a try.)

I've been to four doctors in my group practice with severe and ongoing pain in both hips and one knee. Scotland. They all have different opinions. I got my back scanned eventually, this has been for two long very painful years. They said back had damage but op wouldn't help. No one can agree if it's off my back or if I have bursae in my hips. I cannot sleep, it's so painful to lie on any joints. I walk daily to keep moving, I've lost three stones with one to go. I'm in tears of exasperation and pain. I've just had hips and knee x rayed, waiting on gp coming back from hols for results. My husbands x rays did not show anything but he ended up getting a new knee and hip as he was in pain. In our area they have cut right back on ops for financial reasons. Asked Gp if a private consult would help, she said no. Been waiting many months for physio appt. am at wits end with pain and no sleep. I had one steroid injection which didn't work. Can't take major papainkillers for stomach issues. Sorry this is long, I don't know how much longer I can take this and don't know where to go now . I can't afford private treatment, would just have been a one off consult. Any ideas

Tizliz Mon 14-Aug-17 15:22:59

mags1234 feel for you. I sometimes take amitriptyline at nights to help me sleep but that means I tend to lie on my hips heavily and it is then worse in the mornings. I am also in Scotland. My doctor thought it was arthritis (as I have this badly in my hands) but the consultant says my hips are clear of arthritis. My OH is coming with me this time (end of month) so at least he will understand more even if there is no other help

Time for a giggle, at my expense. Many years ago when lino was the rage, I lived alone and had to do my own housework. I developed a problem and the doctor told me that I had...'pre patela birsitis'. Anybody ahead of me here? I asked the doc what it was and he said, with a big smile,

All together now

Housemaids knee.... I should have padded my knees when polishing the lino. smile

"lived alone and had to do my own housework". -

Christinefrance Tue 14-Nov-17 21:31:44

I had pre patella bursitis when I was 16 ( many years ago) It was due to constantly knocking my knee on the wooden blocks attached to the pedals of my bike, said bike being too big at the time. Does anyone else remember those blocks.
I had an operation to remove the bursar.

Tizliz Tue 14-Nov-17 21:50:30

They don't do the operation any more, didn't work very well. Really suffering this week as I am trying to pick up all the leaves, our garden traps them. 15 bags so far this week, but had to stop for the moment.
