WHY - and this is about health - are socks made as they are?

You get new socks, and they are made at an angle of about 120 degrees - or more - at the heel.
But feet are at 90 degrees....

Result, for me, is a tight creased band forming over the front of my ankle round to the heel.
And - varicose veins all over my feet beyond this.

Now I didn't know this could happen. Varicose veins on your feet? It has happened rather quickly, as at the beginning of August I was walking around Iffley Lock in Oxford with my grandson and I don't remember problems.
Now I'm having to treat my feet very carefully and find they can be quite painful, especially as one vein is at the back of my right heel. None of my shoes are comfortable.

Please don't recommend 'comfort top' socks, I've been getting various makes for years. Most of them aren't.
I'm debating diabetic socks, but they look like sacks!

GP is referring me to a Foot and Ankle clinic, but when?

.......any help?

DH swears by bamboo socks from the sock shop online. They are not expensive at all. He has heart problems and legs get very swollen but these have solved the problem. He says he's never been so comfy and as a result he bought 12 pairs and threw out all his old ones

Yes, this has inspired me. Bought bamboo thermals from Aldi two years ago. Best ever sleep wear. So annoyed missed their sale last week. Need to research socks and more sleepwear. Feel the blooming cold!!

I wear socks inside out to avoid the rubbing seam and have always done so as I am a princess (I can feel the pea under the mattress too). Now I also wear trainer socks which don't come up to the ankle and leave tight painful marks. Mind you I also wear trainers most of the time so I don't know if they are wearable with other shoes.

I have never heard of bamboo socks - must look for those.

I was given bamboo socks for Christmas a few years ago. They don't stay up and they have already got several holes.

Perhaps the technology has improved in the meantime.

I heard much to my delight, that BHs are online, a pity their shops arent stilla round, try them for socks, good luck AlieOxon.

TK Maxx have bamboo socks, they are lovely and soft, but I find they wear out very quickly.

AlieOxon Tue 24-Oct-17 12:13:58

I have, when it was mentioned. But...can't see anything like the socks I had, and have my suspicions that the 'BHS' name has been taken over - anyone know? Wish it hadn't gone from Oxford.

Just been in my sock drawer and thrown out 14 pairs which have shrunk and are too short for my feet.
On the way I noticed, not only are most of them way over the 120 degrees, but have very little in the way of heel sticking out at the back. Think this contributes to the tight band I described before...

Is it cheaper to make socks as almost a straight tube?

AlieOxon Tue 24-Oct-17 12:14:38

(I was answering diddy)

AlieOxon Tue 24-Oct-17 12:15:09

The first one.....

I've just sent for some bamboo socks. I hope they're OK for wearing in wellies.

I have to have men's because I find the women's sizes only go up to 7.

AlieOxon Tue 24-Oct-17 16:22:01

I looked at the men's and thought - they're much better colours than the women's! But too big for me.

Hi AlieOxon,My husband suffers from varicose veins and he swears by walking socks as they are very suportive.

Elegran Sat 28-Oct-17 11:48:46

Alie Putting together the two facts that you like the colours of men's socks although they are too big, and that 14 pairs of your socks have been thrown out because they have shrunk, do I see a case for extreme laundering?

AlieOxon Sat 28-Oct-17 13:12:22

Do you mean is it my fault?....
I buy socks. They fit at first, and seem ok. I wash them, at 40 degrees and for 20 minutes. I used to sometimes dry them on the radiators, but not anymore. They shrink. They hurt my feet. I toss them in the drawer, and get some more....

AND one of the sock lots I sent for came yesterday. I undid the package and extracted the first pair - only to find that one sock did not match the other in that the welt is half an inch longer! The other welt is thinner.
That's Stayup Nonelastic Thermals, by the way.
The fit might have been ok, but I'd have to wear them for a time to find out. The colours are passable.

I'm not impressed. Do I undo the others (can't see until I do) to find if they are the same, or do I just do the Amazon Return which means driving to the other side of town?

Elegran Sat 28-Oct-17 13:15:40

Not saying it is your fault, but that if you treat a new pair of men's size socks the same, they may end up as women's size and fit you.

starbird Sat 28-Oct-17 13:57:32

Bamboo socks are comfortable but I had some black ones and they left little bits of black fluff all over the place if I didn't wear slippers.

AlieOxon Sat 28-Oct-17 17:18:48

Elegran I am not buying large men's socks, I am buying size 4-8 which should fit me. The fit is not the problem. I wonder did you read the beginning of this thread.
Without washing the socks by hand, I could hardly treat them more gently!

To repeat, most socks which fit, tend to be too tight from the front of my ankle to the heel. This makes a tight band round, which seems to be obstructing the circulation in my feet. and has lead to varicosities over the front of my feet.
When wearing shoes this can be uncomfortable to painful.
At the moment, at home, I'm wearing loose backless slippers without socks.

What on Earth are bamboo socks ?

Nelliemoser Sat 28-Oct-17 17:57:18

A friend in my knitting group does socks. They do look good. She is a brilliant knitter. I could not be bothered, too fiddly.

Nelliemoser Sat 28-Oct-17 18:03:07

Bellanonna They make fibre out of bamboo to make fabric and knitting yarn etc.

It is the sort of rayon making process. It can be made by natural processes or by using some fairly nasty chemicals .It is very soft .

pinkpeony Sat 28-Oct-17 19:01:53

I bought these boys socks and they are very comfortable. I have machine washed them on low.
