Quinsy

That is a word I haven't heard for years kitty I thought I it had died out to be replaced by a modern illness as things seem to.
I have no experience at all and will keep my fingers crossed for your GD, do let us know.

What is a “quinsy”?
I suppose I could google it.
Hope she is seen quickly, treatment started and that she is on the mend very very soon.

Apparently it requires/can require Iv antibiotics.

It's a really old fashioned sounding thing, a bit like dropsy!!

Having googled it I can see that today, tonsillitis is quickly diagnosed and treated which is why Quinsy is so rare today.
I hope your GD gets swift and effective treatment, poor little girl.

Sorry Maw, it's an abcess on the tonsils which can need lancing! She's 9! And apparently, she's very young!

When DGC are poorly it really drags you down doesn’t it?

She's been seen - brilliant NHS - it's only really bad viral tonsillitis! phew!

“Only” - still bad enough and very painful, but TG not even worse, ??

How can they tell it's viral rather than bacterial? Or is it a ploy not to prescribe abs straight away?

kitty I had this at Christmas 2015. What started as a viral infection on 23rd ended up with a full blown bacterial infection by Boxing Day.
The doctor I saw at the walk in centre was cross that I hadn’t sought medical advice sooner. DH pointed out to him (I couldn’t talk by this point) that there were no pus filled spots on my throat at first, I think that’s the difference between viral and bacterial infections. I had strong abs and had to go back to my own GP when the surgery reopened after Christmas. Fortunately it cleared up and I was alright, no need for all the scary things that Dr. Google describes.
I’ve always suffered with tonsillitis so DH is very adept with a torch flashed down my throat at the first signs of any soreness.
Just keep checking your DGD for any signs of yellow spots, that seems to be the indicator that all is not well.

The doctor at the walk-in centre told DD to take her to A&E if she started drooling!

We didn't look at Google - only NHS Choices. It is pretty scary!

Wishing her a speedy recovery. Tonsilitis is horrid even in it's simplest form.

That sounds an ouchy thing for a wee girl to have. Hope she feels better really soon. Lots of hugs and fluids might help a bit x

I just checked with her mum who is letting her watch Harry Potter to her hearts content and being shouted at each time she suggests she has a drink.

DD had quinsies when she was far from home and I had to tell ask her friends to take her to hospital where she was put on an IV antibiotic drip.
She has since had her tonsils out as she kept getting tonsillitis.

She sounds as if she is on the mend - but she does need to keep her intake of fluids up!

BIL spent a couple of days in hospital on an iv antibiotic drip a few years ago, he was extremely ill with a quinsy. Such a cutesy name for a serious condition.

When DD was 16 she had abscesses on her tonsils, both at the same time. Our GP did not notice or send her for any tests and just prescribed antibiotics.

The problem she had had was only discovered a year later when we paid for her to have her tonsils out and the surgeon told us that it was a good thing we had been prepared to pay for the op because the holes left by the abscesses were becoming constant wells of infection. She ended up with an extra day in hospital

I had an abscess on my tonsil once, and boy did it hurt! I have rarely felt so ill in my life, but the doc was unsympathetic . I could swallow my own saliva, so drooled and dribbled until the abscess burst. I knew I was really ill!

A Quinsy can be life threatening if not pounced on immediately. My grandfather had one which proved fatal; mind you it was 1949 when antibiotics were still in their relevant infancy!

Presumably what DD has was quinsy. Dismissed by GP, who also refused a referral for an NHS tonsillectomy. We had it done privately and the surgeon made it very clear after the event that the operation was very necessary in her case.
