Has anyone had / got this, started about 18th of this month with sore throat and just can't seem to shift awful cough and stuffed up nose and head ( feels like I am swimming under water) wake up with mouth like the bottom of a bird cage. Have been taking paracetamol etc but does anyone know how long it lasts

Started on Boxing Day for me. Thought it was just a cold, but I have no voice at all, not even a croak and I sound like a seal honking when I cough. Digestive system all over the place. Sleep is in short bursts until I'm so exhausted and I get 3 or 4 hours in. I've been hanging around on the insomniac thread a lot! tchgrin

A friend is only starting to feel better after almost 3 weeks. After watching the documentary about building up a resistance to antibiotics I don't want to take any if I can help it (useless if it's a viral infection anyway). Fortunately I have no plans until Thursday (mammogram).

PS tina I have a new appreciation for tena lady type products.

Oh dear, there seem to be a lot of nasty bugs about at the moment. Just back from a NYE party with more than half the guests still suffering or just recovering, DH is on his third bad cold of the past few weeks, and I’ve just heard that DGS3 has tonsillitis, so I doubt I’ll escape the nasties. Keep cosy and warm and look after yourselves, all you poorly people.

Yes apparently it's air born according to our GP. Definitely a virus because 18month old has had the cough for about six weeks low and the viral rash is just coming out on her torso. Hopefully she's towards he end of it now. She hasn't been her normal little self at all.

NfkDumpling Mon 01-Jan-18 06:40:14

Sorry Wilma I thought your Happy New Year wishes at three this morning were because you'd just got home from a party and you were languishing! Sorry! flowers

It's weird the way this virus is picking off random members in a family. Only one, maybe two in each of our family houses have caught it. Random ages too.

Willow500 Mon 01-Jan-18 07:34:35

My DIL has had this for several weeks but as she's come from NZ she's not picked it up here. Ringing the doctor tomorrow for her as she seems to have got worse the last few days. No doubt I'll have it by the end of the month - I'm always ill in Feb!! Get well everyone!

WilmaKnickersfit Mon 01-Jan-18 09:13:02

Nfk no need to apologise, I was happy enough last night (or this morning IYNWIM!). If I'm posting, I'm OK. grin

Lazigirl Mon 01-Jan-18 14:02:15

It's kinda comforting to read these posts, although I do feel sorry for everyone especially at Christmas, but as DH and I have got similar symptoms as described, at least we don't think it's something nasty like Legionnaires from the hotel we stayed in Netherlands over Christmas. (I have always been a hypochondriac, it's genetic!) We havent eaten and been in bed for 3 days, but up today for first time, and I must be feeling better as just eaten half a Twixt as its all I fancied. It's like a type of flu bug I think with nasty cough, and DH has itchy rash, and we have had to change bedsheets in night as they have been wet through - not through incontince - but the cough isn't doing my pelvic floor any good grin

DH has it, has barely slept for three nights and I have taken to the spare bedroom. Ha caught it from DGS, who is recovering from it and was staying with us at Christmas.

I do not have it (yet) and am crossing fingers and toes, touching wood etc etc that I will not get it.

Almost two weeks here since I started with dry tickly cough, that then turned into the most dreadful catarrh, congestion, blocked sinuses, sore ribs and generally feeling rubbish.I dread nighttime at the moment as so bunged up it's hard to sleep.I soldiered on through Xmas which was not our busiest, but still family staying on and off all week and although DDs have been helpful I'm so glad everyone's gone, decorations down and collapsed on the sofa this afternoon contemplating a busy day back at work tomorrow and still not feeling well.DH now has some form of it.This is 4th cold /virus thing since September. Since my flu jab actually!DGD started nursery a while back and I think she's passed things on,but this latest one I'm pretty fed up because we went for a meal at friends and someone turned looking ill,and saying they wondered if they should have come ,and was sat next to me all evening.Grrr !We were invited to other friends today, but have cried off as we can't face any more socialising and food, and wouldn't want to pass this on.I'm normally pretty stoic but it's getting me down ,and I long to breathe normally. This thread is reassuring though, knowing others have also taken ages to recover.Best wishes to all fellow sufferers !

DanniRae Mon 01-Jan-18 17:21:33

I read in the paper today that it's a type of flu from Australia. We are ok at the moment - had the flu jab so maybe that's why?
I wish that everyone suffering feels lots better soon flowers

kittylester Mon 01-Jan-18 17:25:56

I had the flu jab too. I've been very very tired!

etheltbags1 Mon 01-Jan-18 17:29:27

Im so fed up with my symptoms. I need to work from tomorrow too otherwise im losing money im on 0 hours so every hpur is necessary. I too needed to buy tena ladies as the cough is so harsh

Lazigirl Mon 01-Jan-18 17:39:34

I wouldn't put to much faith in the flu vacc as an article in BMJ last year said that it has been largely ineffective in the over 65s, and a better vacc has to be developed for this age group.

kittylester Mon 01-Jan-18 18:17:57

I think it is over 75s that are not so well protected by the vaccination.

What I have had has been nothing like as bad as the flu but very draining.

Lazigirl Mon 01-Jan-18 18:30:02

The article does mention over 65s kitty.

BBbevan Mon 01-Jan-18 18:59:50

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good tonic? . My DD had a horrendous cold a few weeks ago. Now she has another.

tinaf1 Mon 01-Jan-18 21:12:20

Metatone gets a good write up BBbevan but sure a good pharmacist can recommend something , well spent day in bed today 3 weeks into this now , even my teeth and hair was hurting . To all those who have discovered the joy of Tena ladies ? Hope you all feel better soon

WilmaKnickersfit Mon 01-Jan-18 22:09:10

The other day I sneezed so hard my new crown shot out of my mouth! I can see it as I type this. tchgrin

Jane10 Mon 01-Jan-18 22:29:32

We all had a strange sort of cold. Felt miserable for a day or two. I was shivery then too hot. My throat was an unpleasant yellow colour confused at its worst but it cleared up relatively quickly. DH and I didn't get the irritating cough that others got though. I'd say that I'm completely over it now but that's 10 days. Sounds like some others are suffering for much longer.

merlotgran Mon 01-Jan-18 22:34:46

I haven't felt this tired since I had a hysterectomy. grin

mcem Mon 01-Jan-18 22:40:43

Still have a nasty wet cough and if things haven't improved by Wed I 'm to visit my GP again. Saw her 2 weeks ago after suffering for a week at that stage. So many changing symptoms but no temperature, no aches apart from sore ribs and throat.
Worst of all - no energy!

SueDonim Mon 01-Jan-18 23:54:53

I awoke this morning with one eye completely gummed shut with gunk. Gross. I am on the mend, albeit slowly, and I hope everyone else is improving too. It's a rotter.

I've also just realised that I've been diddled out of wearing the new red velvet frock which I had planned to wear to a Hogmanay party last night. I'll need to find another occasion, though I've absolutely nothing suitable on the calendar at the moment. confused

WilmaKnickersfit Tue 02-Jan-18 00:25:08

No aches or temperatures here either. We've got food, snacks and Christmas gift goodies that should have been eaten by tomorrow when DH goes back to work. We've had some something to eat every day, but neither of us have any enthusiasm or appetite for indulging. We've not had visitors or been out, so I need to see what space I can make in our small freezer because I have an un-iced Christmas cake and half an iced one uneaten. Still had a lovely Christmas with my family though. smile

newnanny Tue 02-Jan-18 12:05:31

My dh and I had the same awful virus since began on Boxing Day and at times have struggles to breathe as both asthmatics as well. My ribs hurt with coughing and I only have a few doses of Gee's Linctus left which is only thing that stops the cough for me. I have tried to buy more on line but online chemists appear out of stock which is not good. I am staying at home in warm and hope it does not last much longer. I had flu vaccination and it has not given me protection.

goose1964 Tue 02-Jan-18 12:32:56

I've been ill since 27th Dec I had a nasty dry but chesty cough.Since it became productive I've not been coughing so much so the pain in the chest is better. I'M still getting the not being ab;e to breathe properly. It feels like it is getting stuck halfway down and I discovered that rubbing my throat helps
