Has anyone had / got this, started about 18th of this month with sore throat and just can't seem to shift awful cough and stuffed up nose and head ( feels like I am swimming under water) wake up with mouth like the bottom of a bird cage. Have been taking paracetamol etc but does anyone know how long it lasts

Well thank-you so much for that information Wilma. I will be in touch with DM's GP today to see what can be done. My DM is usually also fiercely independent. She needs no help at all usually ( unless it entails light bulb changing etc etc ). It was this flu that started it all. When she was in hospital, they had to wait several days for her knee swelling to subside. They thought it was broken, however it was twisted and torn ligaments. She could not even walk on leaving hospital. She is now getting around with her walking stick . She is just so weak with the virus. I know it can take weeks. The OT arranged for her to have extra Bannister's and hand rails put in for the stairs. She was also brought a high backed armchair for easier standing. She was assessed by the physio going up and down stairs. This was last week about two days after being discharged. Since then myself, my Sister and my DD have been cooking and cleaning between us. I just find it exhausting as I have Narcolepsy/Cataplexy you see. Hopefully this dreaded flu will finally subside and give her some strength back. Thanks again for your help.

NannyTee you're welcome and I hope you get some support.

I was due to see my GP tomorrow for an appointment booked ages ago, but I just won't be able to go to the surgery. A doctor is coming to see me at home instead and this will be the second time in my adult life I've had a home visit. The first time was after major surgery. I've been feeling worse, not better for the last few days and was being stupid stubborn about going to the surgery. My DH couldn't get on the phone quick enough to arrange it and the good news is house calls are done by practice doctors. I thought all home visits were done by agency doctors now.

The Doctor did come out to DM. Thanks. Hope you are soon feeling better yourself. flowers

I felt a lot better so yesterday evening, I went to the first meeting of a course I have signed up for. Easy journey, parked close to the building it was held in, 2 hours in a warm classroom discussing and home. I feel like death warmed up today, hmm

kittylester Wed 17-Jan-18 10:45:48

It's a devious bugger isn't it Monica - lulls you into a false sense of security!!grin

Oh dear, you lot - I just popped in with tea, Lemsip and sympathy. It's strange how some people seem to be surrounded by sickness yet don't succumb. My DD2, DSIL and baby DGS4 have been really poorly for over a week now, yet DGS2 (4yo) is still fit and well and going to school. Likewise his cousin of the same age - three adults and her brother in the same house can hardly get out of bed, yet she's as perky as ever. We've been banned from visiting anyone - DD2 says they feel they should be painting a big red cross on their front door. sad

DH is still really poorly but he's up and dressed for the first time since Saturday and my legs have finally stopped turning to jelly every time I do a small task like unload the dishwasher. grin

Fingers crossed it doesn't come back for a third time.

Yesterday I went to pick up my repeat prescription from the chemist, parked right outside, picked up an on line order from M&S, exactly over the road, then went to the hairdressers, mostly spent sitting down gossiping, came home, sat down and fell asleep!

I've made soup this morning and emptied the bins but I'm pacing myself for the school run this afternoon. Thinking ahead, I've got frozen curry out for dinner.

Prearranged, in a vase, flowers for all of those still suffering.

I'm almost over it. My nose is still congested but not enough to blow properly, which is annoying! I've still got the painful throat, on and off, but overall, I'm getting there! This is week 4 so so it's been a nasty so-and-so.

I'm off to my book group tomorrow, my first bit of socialising since last year!

The doctor came to see me at home yesterday and luckily it was my own GP. The good news is my chest is clear, blood pressure and oxygen levels and are OK. So just laryngitis and complications from coughing to get over now. Fluid inside the ear will clear when the inflammation goes down and I can hear properly again. He's confident I passed out so that brain could get enough oxygen when I was coughing and this was an exacerbation of the jerking I get sometimes when I cough. I know this is the vagus nerve functioning correctly, but it was a relief to hear him confirm that. Need to see him again in 3 or 4 weeks to check that this does function normally when I'm not unwell, which is fine with me. I still felt like a fraud having a home visit.

Today I woke up with a clearer head and one of my ears popped. Not the bad one, but every little helps. Fingers crossed I'm on the mend. Unfortunately it looks like DH is coming down with another cold. He had a mild cold a few weeks ago and thought he'd gotten away with it, but he's coughing this time and that's not like him.

Glad it sounds like some of you are turning the corner and fresh flowers for those who need cheering up. smile

SueDonim Wed 17-Jan-18 19:45:26

Wilma, I'm glad the doctor could reassure you about the passing out. It sounds as though he checked you over throughly.

My ear is clearing now, too! I don't feel so much as though I have my head in a goldfish bowl, haha.

NannyTee Wed 17-Jan-18 20:20:53

I'm still so very worried about my DM of 84. Don't think she can shake this virus off ?

WilmaKnickersfit Wed 17-Jan-18 21:11:42

SueDonim he even had one of those little clips that go on your finger to measure the oxygen in your blood - still don't understand how that works!

NannyTee I'm so sorry she's not improving. Will the doctor be checking in on her or do you have to ring up again?

MissAdventure Wed 17-Jan-18 21:17:16

Your poor mum, NannyTee. Is she resting enough, and having lots of fluids. You will have to call the doctor out again if you suspect she isn't improving.. the poor soul.

SueDonim Wed 17-Jan-18 21:23:04

The doctor needs to know about your mum, NannyTee. She sounds v poorly. My mum is 90yo and has thrown off this flu better than I have! She's gadding about as usual now so I'd definitely ask for another check up for your mum.

Wilma, I don't understand those clips, either! I think it's all smoke and mirrors. grin

NannyTee Thu 18-Jan-18 09:13:41

Yes the Doctor came out Monday . She still has a chest infection . She's given her stronger Antibiotics. Thanks ladies flowers

MissAdventure Thu 18-Jan-18 09:22:42

Sending her (and you) all good wishes, NannyTee. Hope she can get on top of it now.

kittylester Thu 18-Jan-18 09:24:20

Ssshhhh!Don't tell anyone but I feel heaps better.

Look after your mum NannyTee.

NannyTee Thu 18-Jan-18 09:53:07

NfkDumpling Thu 18-Jan-18 14:45:53

Good news Kitty - there’s hope for us all then!

NannyTee Thu 18-Jan-18 14:55:50

Hope everyone starts to feel better soon . I'm glad Kitty . Oh sorry ssshhhh ?

kittylester Thu 18-Jan-18 14:58:10

Spoke too soon - need a sit down currently!!

merlotgran Thu 18-Jan-18 15:03:58

So do I kitty but DH is worse so I'm pacing myself with jobs as I still need a sit down after each one.

NannyTee Thu 18-Jan-18 15:09:18

The Doctor that came out to my DM said she has never known so many flu viruses to be about at one time. They are all different strains. It's because the population go abroad a heck of a lot more than they used to in Winter. I said " that's cos it's too bloomin cold here " no winning hey !
