Are you managing your microbiome?

Some recent food fads are rather extreme and cutting out whole food groups can be dangerous but it seems our gut flora are going to save us from every possible ill, are the seat of the immune system and are likened to a second brain, so are you looking after yours? You need to feed your personal gut garden on lots of fibre (prebiotics) and fermented foods (probiotics). I'm a convert and have embraced the fermentation craze. I make my own yoghurt and sauerkraut and it's really easy and fun and the result is delicious. Shop bought sauerkraut is usually pasteurised so the friendly lactobacilli are dead. How's your microbiome doing?

Its fine thank you but without resort to the sauerkraut which is the work of the devil.

Once I've carted the spade, fork, rake, wheelbarrow etc into the gut garden I'll be able to get started. I'll go easy on the weedkiller. grin

I dread to think lizzy although I do try ( now and again) and I like Activia yoghurt.
What other foods are good? I don’t care for sauerkraut though.

I often feel like there's enough fermentation going on in my stomach. blush

It's probably rubbish and shouting out for some nurturing - I do like proper yogurt though.

DD is a fan of fermented foods but you can keep them as far as I'm concerned

Having recently read Clever Guts by Michael Mosley I'm taking great care of my microbiome with great results . Weight loss without any effort , better sleeping and I have lost count of the number of people who have said how well I look , and they know nothing of my new regime .

I drink kefir.

I'm with the people who don't like sauerkraut. We had Polish friends when I was young and every time we went they served us the dreadful stuff.

Is red wine fermented? Does that count? Regular intake keeps me happy. ?

Matelda Thu 29-Mar-18 10:15:23

I agree with every word you say, NotAGran55.

I survive very well on a good varied mixed diet. I cut down sugar and carbohydrates as I have type 2 daibetes. No fancy diets for me thanks.

Thanks, NotaGran, I've just bought Michael Moseley's Clever guts, plus a related recipe book. Hope it works for me like it has for you. Well done smile

Reduced intake of everything is working very well for me.

Sheilasue Thu 29-Mar-18 10:53:26

Eating sensibly and smaller meals is fine for me I like my food.

goldengirl Thu 29-Mar-18 10:54:32

I have IBS but since I've eaten more fresh fruit & veg and have reduced ready meals, take aways and prepared cooked meats I've been a lot better - though I do get the odd flare up still but not half as often. I also keep to a 'toilet' routine and altogether I feel so much better gutwise. I don't eat or drink any specially developed 'good for the gut' food / drink. Best of all I managed to lose weight too!!!

Thanks nanny27- I'm with you

I make my own kefir - they're my babies and we look after each other nicely.

Anniebach Thu 29-Mar-18 13:31:11

I didn't know I had one/them

lemongrove Thu 29-Mar-18 13:44:53

What’s kefir? ( sounds like a nomadic tribe.)

How do you make kefir sdcb? I would like to have a go.

Hm999 Thu 29-Mar-18 14:20:21

I like the idea of making my own kefir. Interesting thread. Thanks.

I find that my gut thrives very well on sugar butties and fish and chips.
It never complains and at 82 I can still run up stairs two at a time.
Surely food is meant for enjoyment as well as sustenance.

patriciageegee Thu 29-Mar-18 14:39:17

Think I've overdone the kefir culturing! Bought some grains online and busily got going but, typical bull-at-gate style, upped the kefir consumption daily and after a couple of weeks thought my gut biome was about to erupt out of my ears with v.painful cramps to boot! The grains are now gently dozing in the freezer...
