Well today's the day. My second knee replacement op. It's an awful thought knowing what the recovery will be like. I was very sick in hospital last time due to the pain meds. Just lost days.
Will pack this morning and prepare the house. Just looking at all the necessary stuff is depressing. At my pre op visit I was shocked at how anxious I felt just going through those doors.
Oh well. Needs must. Onwards!

Thinking of you. Hope it's over now ⛾

Growing0ldDisgracefully Thu 28-Jun-18 10:21:29

Just wanted to add my best wishes to you. I've had the horrible postop sickness but hang in in there, it won't last forever. flowers

Lupatria Thu 28-Jun-18 10:31:15

good luck jane - i know exactly how you feel as i've got my second knee replacement op coming in 5 weeks. the last one went well 9 years ago but i'm still anxious about this one.
hope to have an update from you to let us all know how the op and the hospital stay went. i'm sure you'll be fine - and knowing that you'll soon be able to walk without pain is a bonus.

SueDonim Thu 28-Jun-18 10:31:36

Good luck for the op. My mum had it done when she was 85 and it was more arduous than her hip but the relief from pain made it worthwhile.

Make sure you tell everyone about the previous sickness, so they can make changes to help you. flowers

There are some good anti sickness meds available these days; I had some after my recent surgery and they were a God send!
All the best for a swift recovery ?

granma47 Thu 28-Jun-18 10:39:45

I too have had one knee replaced and the other is letting me know it won't be long before it needs doing as well. The worst thing about the operation for me was the spinal anaesthetic and loss of control of my bladder for a while. Apart from that, aftercare from my other half was much needed.

anitamp1 Thu 28-Jun-18 10:43:39

Good luck. If it's any comfort, my late MIL had both her knees done. After the first she said she would never have the second done as the first had been so awful. But she had the second one done and it was completely different and so much better than the first. So think positive.

Diggingdoris Thu 28-Jun-18 10:44:58

I also had one knee done 2yrs ago and will need the other one done before long. I had the epidural which they told me does not have those sicky side effects in the same way as a general anaesthetic. So when my next one needs doing that's what I shall ask for.

BlueBelle Thu 28-Jun-18 10:45:19

Good luck Jane I m a bit late but nevertheless wishing you a speedy recovery ?

blueberry1 Thu 28-Jun-18 10:47:13

Hope all goes well, try to think about the positives once it is all over!

Kim19 Thu 28-Jun-18 10:52:20

Wish you all the best and a speedy recovery Jane10. Quite foolishly, although we have never met, I regularly think of you with gratitude as you introduced me to 8:16. Serious good luck and get back in touch with us as soon as you're able. I will most certainly be thinking of you. Hearty great cheers!

Lupin Thu 28-Jun-18 10:56:06

I wish you well Jane and a good recovery. I hope they can adjust the medication for you this time and that you are soon pain free and home. Best wishes.

Greyduster Thu 28-Jun-18 10:57:00

Good luck Jane and a speedy recovery. I’m sure you are in very good hands.

Jane10 Thu 28-Jun-18 10:59:49

Thanks all. It's so comforting having all your kind wishes from all over the place. I'm due for admission at 1.30 for op at 4.
I've remembered all the helpful tips from GNers last time. Just put the slippy sheets on the bed. The big pillows are piled up in the sitting room for leg raising and the ice packs are freezing. The raised toilet frame and long handled shoe horn are braced for action!

Aepgirl Thu 28-Jun-18 11:14:01

When I read this I thought it was from a friend of mine who is having her 2nd knee replacement next week - all the same worries - so you are just the same as most people going for an op. You will be dancing in a couple of months.

Matelda Thu 28-Jun-18 11:16:32

My first knee was done eighteen months ago, but no one told me that it could take up to a year for the swelling to go down. As mine took ten months, I spent nearly a year thinking I had been crippled for life. But it passes! I have spent the last six months slimming down and working out with the exercise videos on YouTube. There are all kinds which are low impact, such as Walk at Home, seated, recommended for seniors, and all kinds of dancing. These cab done at home, every day, in front of a long mirror. Now my muscles are built up, I can walk normally up and down stairs, and even kneel. When my second knee is done, I shall be prepared in my mind in case it is not “all done and dusted” in six weeks. Good luck with your surgery, and fingers crossed for your quick recovery.

Hello Jane I had my first TKR 10 weeks ago and know what you mean. Like you I had a bad reaction to the morphine but luckily only had one dose and they stopped it. The recovery is grueling- I’m still at the I wish I’d not had it done stage and would NEVER have the other done ? but I might change my mind sending you lots of love and best wishes xx

jusnoneed Thu 28-Jun-18 11:35:45

Hope it's not as bad as you fear. They should know about your reaction to meds last time so will give you different ones this time.
My sis in law had her second one last year and she got on much better than when she had the first, probably because she could move about easier because she wasn't get pain from the other leg. My OH is waiting for a call to go in for his second one too, he cannot wait to get it done.

Jane10 Thu 28-Jun-18 11:37:32

Lark I do know that it will be worth it as my previous TKR is now fine. I don't know where the 'experts' get the notion that recovery will only be 6 weeks. I'd say it was at least a year for me.
It's a marathon not a sprint.- I have all the theory but it's the practice that I dread!

4allweknow Thu 28-Jun-18 11:39:10

Best Wishes for a speedy recovery. Just think of the discomfort as being for a very small episode of your life and think how better you will be when it's all over.

grandtanteJE65 Thu 28-Jun-18 11:58:13

Hope by the time you read this that you are over the worst, and that it wasn't as bad as you feared.

Get well soon!

lovebeigecardigans1955 Thu 28-Jun-18 12:18:59

Best of luck to you, Jane10. Hope it all goes well.

sarahellenwhitney Thu 28-Jun-18 12:24:50

Jane10 Thinking of you as I am waiting myself for a second hip replacement . I got through my first with no problems and hoping the second will be the same as I am now much older..The fact you were not so good with your first knee op does not mean the same with your second. The hospital should have your records and it would be worth you mentioning to them how you felt the first time concerning your medication. I wish you luck and let GN know when you have had the op.

luzdoh Thu 28-Jun-18 12:25:28

Jane10 We're all thinking of you Jane!

It's natural to be more apprehensive the second time. You know too much this time! However, the sooner it's done, the sooner you can get on the recovery path, so keep looking ahead, the not feeling well is only temporary, the nice new knee is permanent!! I'm sure you will manage it!
Time is always moving forward, so even if it hurts, it is getting better and getting nearer to the time when you will have a perfect knee!

Make sure you give yourself encouraging talks. Look forward to being better. Trust yourself to cope with the healing period. The Hospital Staff should know which meds made you sick last time and avoid them this time. They have plenty of alternatives, they will look after you.

Think ahead to what you will do with your new active knee! A full set! Where will you go? What will you see?
Lots and lots of love, Lx flowers
