How to lose weight?

I've always been fairly ordinary in terms of weight. But since my 50s my weight has crept steadily up. I'm now well...quite a bit larger blush and over the past year or so I've been trying to lose a bit of weight. I look after my grandsons twice a week which is exhausting and I think I'm quite active those days. I do one Pilates class a week. I do have a sweet tooth so am trying to have fruit instead and save treats for the weekend (although occasionally I'll share my boys' treats grin. Does anyone have any good tips? Does the 5:2 diet work? I hate gyms.

Hello! After many years struggling with my weight, and related health conditions, I've decided to try Mounjaro. I'm 72, suffer from osteoarthritis and hiatus hernia, I get breathless and have chronic back pain. I've tried many ways of weight control over the years and I'm desperate to kickstart it. My brother has used it successfully and is now a healthy weight. Has anyone had any experience of using Mounjaro?

Eating more than one small portion of fruit a day will not help you lose weight. Fruit is full of sugar, has some fibre and vitamins etc but should not be a substitute for sweet treats.
If you wan tto lose weight you have to treat is as a much bigger picture than just swapping some foods for others.

I share all your pain, laced with guilt at my own lack of self control. I have T2 diabetes and a very sweet tooth. I am about a stone overweight, and have been much more than that. I have learned that the only way to avoid ‘bad’ food is not to have it in the house. Planning out my exact menu for the whole week and then only ordering things that I need for that menu works (and saves me money). If it’s not there I can’t eat it.

Exactly this. Ditto. If I have chocolates I eat them all. If I have biscuits I have 1/2 pack. So I simply don't buy them and with reduced sugar intake, I have reduced cravings. Good stuff, keep going!

See above - and I still drink wine.

I've recently lost a stone very, very slowy by adopting new habits. Diets don't work, habits which are sustainable are the way to go.
There's a couple on FB called the Willets who are very sensible and I also read a book called "fat loss habits". For me , losing a stone was hard as I am only 5 foot 2" and only had a stone to lose. that gives me about 1200 calories a day if I want to be in a deficit .
So I learned to prioritise very healthy food. Once I was in the right mindset, it never felt like a diet and it really does feel sustainable because I'm doing good things for my body.
I got a fit bit to track calories and steps and see how many calories I had to play with to lose weight. I lost about 1lb a month a couple of times, but that's fine.
Also I've leaned to do easy cardio like uphill walking, cyclin and swimming and use weights with you tube classes to maintain muscle mass.
It eventually boils down to simple equations.
I know all about "food noise" but unless I was morbidly obese, I wouldn't use them.
Like a lot of ladies, I've struggled, starved, over exercised and lost weight but no one can maintain that.
Since I've changed my mindset and my food choices, I don't get my brian searching for a dopamine rush. Hence the food noise quitens down.
I never really got my head round why I had put a stone on in the first place until I started to understand basic equations.
So six months steady progress which is sustainable and I don't ever feel I'm on a "diet."
This is not a brag, I admit it sounds like one, but when light bulbs finally got switched on at age 67, it made the weight loss very easy (but at times frustratingly slow!)
Good luck everyone - stop dieting and start deciding to fuel your body with good food.

This is an old thread Flippinheck.

I've read my way through it myself - but my personal thing was Lockdown, ie the weight was going down until Lockdown and then it stopped. I still went out walking (I'd planned out private routes...where vehicles were unlikely to go/couldnt go months before Lockdown) and hence I was still out walking without bursts of adrenaline (most of the time) from encountering police cars. But the "darn the ****s" bottles of wine did for my figure again. Am still trying to recover from Lockdown.

Good luck - but pointing out this is a pre-Lockdown thread and "things have changed (a lot)" since then...

Well,it’s basically eating less energy than you use.Three sensible meals a day and no picking in between.

This is EXACTLY what it is.

You have to eat less and exercise more, there just isn't any other way. I keep my weight down by not buying biscuits, cakes or sweets. My treat is to go out and have coffee, just sometimes a cake or biscuit but mostly I would have a childs portion of beans on toast. Might be strange but it works. Also cycle and I can say with hand on heart my legs look the best they have done, tones and straight.

I have most success on a lowish carb diet - I need to have some potato or rice from time to time otherwise I feel quite ill. I combine this with logging what I eat on Myfitness pal and basically eating three modest meals and no snacks at all. I'm quite active and lose between 1 and 2 lb consistently on this regime. I only weigh myself once a week, sometimes a little bit more, as long as the scales are going downwards it doesn't really matter at what rate.

Exercise and walking are important but a healthy diet plan and helpful weight loss tools also help in getting a good result. I have used a resource (http://bit.ly/fat-losss) which really helped me to drop my weight.

Considering your age such situation with weight is sadly a typical thing because during aging your metabolism changes too and becomes slower so many people gain weight after their 40-50s. Because of that it can harder to lose weight too but it's possible, I know many such examples and people who are in a really good shape despite of their age! smile
Your programm for weight loss seems ok but I can recommend to use such tips in addition:
- don't skip your breakfast because avoiding it usually leads to eating more throughout the day
- never eat at night and before sleeping, it's bad for your stomach and weight too, also avoid mindless snacking while watching television and so on
- vegetables and fruits should be a base of your daily menu, not meat and other products with high calories www.healthline.com/nutrition/lose-10-pounds-in-a-month
- add protein for every of your snacks and meals, such products as lean meats, eggs, peanut butter, low-fat yogurt, nuts, beans etc. are perfect for this

Also I think that you need to add more exercises in your regular schedule. You don't need to go to the gym, choose the one activity you like the most of all like yoga for example or a basic fitness complex and make it reguraly. Swimming, walking and running are very helpful in this case too.
I should mention that sometimes problems with weight loss are connected with hormonal imbalance which can be an aftermarth of the aging too. It usually can be fixed in many natural ways but in some cases only professional medical treatment is helpful www.nexelmedical.com/ .
