A return of night sweats

I was on HRT in my late 50s for a few years and came off it as my GP learned that my sister died early from Ovarian cancer and preferred me to stop gradually which I did.

Mostly symptom free apart from the odd hot flush which didn’t bother me too much I’m now 70 but for the last 3 mths or so I’ve started getting terrible night sweats, waking in the early hours drenched and have to take off the sheet and spread a bath sheet under me at least 2/3 times a week.

Any suggestions what’s going on? I’ve got an app with practice nurse for diabetes check soon so I’ll ask her opinion just wonder if anyone else has suffered similar.

Personal question, Tanith - do you drink in the evening?
I have found that other than the odd glass of wine, drinking any alcohol in the evening can result in both leg cramps and sweats although perhaps not as dramatically as you describe. Possibly dehydration?
It might also be stress related - camomile tea at bedtime, do NOT be tempted to have an over warm bath, and keep your bedding light.

Tanith Just go to GP and explain! They can test for any illnesses that have " night sweats" as a symptom and then if needed treat or reassure.
Asking on a forum may bring out scary stories that are nothing to do with your situation but you will be more worried because of them!

Mawbroon I’m teetotal so no drinking and I don’t actually have a bath only a shower, could be stress related as I’m still getting used to dealing with everything since DH passed away.
PECS thanks I will do as you say when can get an appointment just thought others may have had similar.

No solutions, but you have my total sympathy.

I’ve been put on a mild anti depressant, Fluoxitin, for menopausal night flashes. I’m sleeping through after a month on them. ??

i take very strong sage leaf that i get over the internet as cheaper and stronger which ive been taking for years as ive been a 'hotty' since i was a teenager haha, however at the beginning of my menopause i have noticed this no longer works for me and need something else - do you think hrt will help me ??

Get it checked out - always best to know the cause, if possible

I’ve been taking HRT for at least eight years and every now and again go through a phase of having night sweats. I’m going through the phase at the moment and it’s awful waking up wet through. They stop as suddenly as they start. I’ve no idea why. I don’t drink at night and I shower a few hours before bedtime. Night sweats are the bane of my life!

If you don't want to take prescribed meds, I've found Kalms stopped all and any hot flushes - including those dreaded night sweats where I'd wake thinking I'd inadvertently taken a bath in my sleep. Such a horrible sensation!

I’m 67 and wake up most nights at least once bathed in sweat. I thought it was just me. Coincidentally my father used to as well.

I do find that despite the fact my flushes have subsided, if I get stressed about anything - wham they kick in with a vengeance. Meditation and mindfulness practices at night definitely help.

I started with night sweats again at 70, my Dr has put me back on HRT, and i am sleeping better too

MysticalUnicorn Sun 13-Jan-19 12:30:06

Definitely take sage - you can buy drops from Holland Barrett. Taste disgusting, but do the trick.

I find I get worse night sweats when I’ve had an infection causing my temperature to rise (even if only a little!) It seems to knock my thermostat completely out of kilter for a few weeks.
Perhaps you’ve had a cold recently!

Could also be thyroid problem....get it checked out!

I've been having night sweats for 25 years angry. The daytime 'power surges' or 'personal summers' stopped 15 years ago but I can't shift the night sweats. I can't wear anything in bed and just sleep under a duvet cover, occasionally pulling the normal duvet over my rear end. I have found that my optimum temperature is 18 degrees, any higher and it gets the sweats starting. Good luck, if you find a cure please let us know!

I'm 64 and have been having night and day sweats since turning 50. I have them every day and night and wake up at least once a night drenched in sweat and have to lay on top of the duvet until I cool down some hours later. My pillow feels wet and my duvet feels damp, the sweat is making the back of my head itch all the time and I'm getting a rash on the back of my thighs. I don't drink or have baths ever and nor do I drink caffeine. I get through about a litre of water a night too. The heating is rarely on in our house for obvious reasons.

There are other conditions that can cause this. I have polymyalgia and had night sweats when it started, no longer have them as I am on steroid tablets to control it.

icanhandthemback Sun 13-Jan-19 15:50:07

Tanith, are you able to take a more natural remedy for the menopause. There are such things as Black Cohosh which might help.

Thorntrees Sun 13-Jan-19 16:39:07

Hi,I’m 69 and had a really rough time through menopause, not allowed hrt due to cancer treatment. Eventually the daytime flushes are almost gone but the night sweats have never stopped. When I’ve seen my GP about other things I’ve often mentioned I’m still having night sweats and she just smiles and ignores me. If other things are ruled out it seems there’s no solution but put up with them. I know certain things make them worse- a glass of wine etc but if they are going to happen anyway I might as well indulge occasionally. Not a lot of help I know but I think for some women(myself included) the menopause brings changes that just don’t ever go away.

Kathjohn32 Sun 13-Jan-19 18:51:51

Tanith, get them to check your pulse. I have a very common heart irregularity which is easily controlled but I didn't know I had it until the chiropodist checked the pulse in my feet. The doctor said it can cause night sweats also IBS-like symptoms and even anxiety.

Lynne59 Sun 13-Jan-19 18:52:23

Have you had a blood test for Thyroid problems?

Are you on any other tablets that might have caused the sweats? Certain antidepressants, for example, can cause them.

Kacee Sun 13-Jan-19 19:08:06

So glad I saw this post. All of a sudden i started getting sweats back both day and night. Sometimes the sweat actually makes my hair wet in the daytime. It is awful

Jaxie Sun 13-Jan-19 19:12:22

I have terrible day and night sweats and have been told it's because my autonomic system is shot to pieces owing to being burnt out by my stressful job, which I gave up 15 years ago.
